Boot the Bell / Hunger Strike Schedule

by from the IMC-LA listserve Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 at 6:40 PM

Boot the Bell / Hunger Strike Schedule of Events for Irvine, CA Feb. 23-28, 2003

Approximately 60 Florida farmworkers and their student, labor, religious and community allies will begin their "Fast for Farmworker Justice" on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 outside of the Taco Bell corporate headquarters in Irvine, CA. On Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, thousands of allies will join the farmworkers at the Taco Bell headquarters for a huge day of music and solidarity!

The action -- a fast outside one of the world's largest fast-food corporations -- is a powerful contradiction that will dramatically highlight the injustice of fast-food profits derived, in significant part, from farmworker poverty. The Fast comes after a year of silence from Taco Bell executives. (Please visit the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' website -www.ciw-online.org - for information about the ongoing TacoBell Boycott and details of this year's action.)

the events (all events are at the Von Karman taco bell headquarters, at 17901 von karman in Irvine, unless otherwise stated). this site is off the 405 freeway, and in between Jamboree and MacArthur in Irvine. convenient parking nearby and at the fast site.

*ecumenical service, immanuel pres (3300 wilshire) sunday febr 23, 7pm to inaugurate the worker events and hunger strike.

*monday-thursday events:
Pickets scheduled to take place from 11:00 - 1:00 and 4:00 - 6:00 PM DAILY. Bring your signs, loud voices and enthusiasm! 7-8pm candlelight vigils.

*friday febr 28 (this is the MAJOR event): rally in front of taco bell headqtrs 11-4.

if folks are available to help out with driving or translation monday-thurs, or help to set up on friday , contact brian payne at 239 292 3431. there are 3 major stages of events during the week:
(1) on-site events such as the protests, vigils, etc (help with logistics, bringing water, sleeping bags/blankets)
(2) off-site events such as school presentations (they will need drivers and those who wish to help make such presentations to the schools)
(3) and the major event on FRIDAY; help with setting up the stage and details to make this day a success. they expect 2000-3000 people on th is day.
