Peace in Middle Earth in our time
MINAS TIRITH (Gondor News Network) - Thousands of peace activists took to the streets of Minas Tirith and other cities of Middle Earth today to protest what they termed a rush to war with Mordor.
“We need more time for diplomacy,” said a key member of the Middle-Earth Security Council, Saruman the White. “I am not convinced by the evidence presented by my esteemed colleague, Gandalf the Grey, or that the Dark Lord Sauron presents an imminent danger to the peoples of the West.”
Many of the people protesting war in Mordor agreed with Saruman’s remarks. “Sauron says he’s destroyed his Rings of Mass Destruction (RMD) and that’s good enough for me,” said one fellow carrying a sign that said “Elrond is a Balrog.” Another demonstrator urged, “Give the RMD inspectors more time. There’s no reason to rush to any judgment just because Mount Doom is belching lava, the Dark Tower is rebuilt, and Osgiliath has been decimated.” A third protester piped up, “I haven’t heard a single bit of convincing evidence connecting the Nazgul with Sauron. I think they destroyed Osgiliath on their own initiative without any support from Sauron. Besides, it’s understandable they’re angry with Gondor. We haven’t done nearly as much for the Orcs and Goblins and Easterlings as the Nazgul and Sauron have. It’s understandable they throw their support to them. It’s our own fault really.”
As the protesters continued their march through the city, they chanted, “No blood for Mount Doom,” voicing a common sentiment that the leaders of the Western peoples are really seeking to get their hands on the powerful Mount Doom, where the One Ring of Power was allegedly forged.
Gandalf the Grey was unavailable for comment. A spokesman said he was in an undisclosed underground location, which sources have revealed is codenamed: Moria.

The angels of the earth and the spirits of the Indians walk proudly among you today. God and his servants have spoken. There will be peace and there will be justice. We have marched to the gates of heaven and met the opposition with open arms, those who knew the way. We have 30,000,000 of us angels active and many more who could not march around the planet. Let us march again for everytime we do we multiply tenfold. I saw them today, the Angels of Los Angeles, downtown. The spirits of burial grounds beneath the pavement. They were chanting, and rejoicing, for the coming of the creator is reborn in the hearts of all who seek peace and responsible minding of our precious Earth. We are all diverse, hunters and gatherers alike. And yet, from Ted Nugent and the NRA to the ACLU, we have all spoken on behalf of the wise constitution and the Bill of Rights as we have agreed to. We pledged our allegiance not only to a flag, but to the principles of justice and harmony in the papers that back that flag. For this Union is only an agreement on paper, and like so many treaties before, it is simply one we have not broken yet. Let us preserve those rights so that we not alienate any man from this precious union. So that they may see the dawning of a world, in which man uses his superior knowledge to solve problems without violence or raping of the Earth. Right or left, we are all touching the same ground.

A knowingly ridiculous argument. The choice to go and fight is not a option the MAJORITY of Americans have. To fault anyone is nonsense. In addition the VAST, VAST, VAST majority of those in the armed forces are excitedly looking forward to the war. It's what they've trained for and why they joined in the first place. No need to comment. It's simply fact.

Spoke to a friend stationed at Fort Bragg. He just go home from 'Stan. They told him not to unpack his bags. 7 men from his group have filed for divorce since they got back. 4 have been arrested from spousal abuse. He said that he wakes up in the middle of the night looking for his weapon. He told he doesn't want to go back to that shit. He has been trained, and will follow his orders. He said soldiers can't think too much about why there are there. I don't want my friend to die for oil.
Jim Jones' followers wanted to kill themselves and we called it brainwashing. Soldiers believe dying in combat will be honorable and we call it "training".

Your comment makes no sense B.A. - because a free citizen stands up to do their duty does not mean they signed up to go to war for Unocal in Pipelinestan or for Standard Oil in Iraq. Many of them probably volunteered for the same reason I did; that rather quixotic notion that they were signing up to protect their country from foreign agression. Instead they are being used as enforcers for the criminal cabal in the White House. The Oath I took was to support and defend the Country and the Constitution. I don't recall anything in it about Internation Oil Conglomerates or Securing backing for more profligate and unconstitutional spending.

--> Your comment makes no sense B.A. - because a free citizen stands up to do their duty does not mean they signed up to go to war for Unocal in Pipelinestan or for Standard Oil in Iraq.
Diogenes - You've sniffing or snorting some strong glue (or whatever). This has nothing to do with corporate interests and nothing whatsoever to do with oil. It's about terrorism and public safety Diogenes. We're trying to shut down a dangerous player on the world stage.
--> Many of them probably volunteered for the same reason I did; that rather quixotic notion that they were signing up to protect their country from foreign agression.
That is what they're doing Diogenes. When someone foreign crashes jetliners into the World Trade Center, that qualifies as foreign agression.
--> Instead they are being used as enforcers for the criminal cabal in the White House.
Please stop snorting that stuff. There is no criminal cabal in the White House. This administration is the biggest term to term upgrade in US History. We have very strong leadership in the White House. Integrity has been restored to the White House.
--> The Oath I took was to support and defend the Country and the Constitution. I don't recall anything in it about Internation Oil Conglomerates or Securing backing for more profligate and unconstitutional spending.
There wasn't anything about that in the oath you took. There still isn't. It wouldn't be appropriate because those issues have absolutely nothing to do with this world crisis. The word is NOTHING diogenes, NOTHING WHATSOEVER.

I live near a naval base. When I talk to the young men there, guess what, they're not happy about going to fight and maybe die, and for what? Iraq hasn't done anything to us. They didn't send planes into the World Trade Towers. They didn't have 5 of their citizens arrested for video taping the burning buildings and cheering. They didn't have a network of "art student" spies living in every US town where those who did fly the planes were taking flight lessons. Nope, they haven't done anything to us, nor are they a threat to us. And as far as their neighbors are concerned, well, 95%of the Turks aren't worried, they don't want this war. 80% of the Europeans aren't worried, they don't want this war. So why are we invading Iraq? What's the excuse, again?

I think GWB, Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, and the rest of the Bush Administration know considerably more than you do about the complicity of Saddam in terrorist activities. They have real intelligence sources. You have Pacifica Radio and Indymedia (what a laugh).
We have the first truly trustworthy leaders in the past decade. Let's let them do their job and lead.

I'm curious as to what effect (other than symbolic) a city voting for peace has. Does it send a message to the state government and then in turn to the federal? Is it simply a way of voicing a collective concern? I understand the symbolism, but does it go any further than that? Is there some legal ramification to this vote?

There's no legal ramification to this vote as far as I know. But is certainly IS indicative of the mood of the country. I don't have the time, but I would love to add up the numbers that these cities represent. LA Chicago Seattle San Francisco Oakland Detroit Philadelphia Baltimore Santa Fe Alberquere Des Moines Washington DC
Theres a lot more, I just can't think of them off the top of my head. There's a lot of diversity here; from the East coast thru the Middle West to the West coast. And there's a lot of people represented by these cities; at least 20 million. Someone should add up the numbers. BUT, clearly it IS significant.

I take you must be counting some people twice; maybe even 3 or 4 times. I think I know 2 people who are in favor of the Bush Junta's war. BA you are whistling in a hurricane. People are beginning to wake up to the legitimate questions as to why this war is being pushed. They are becoming aware of the fact that it was in the works before 911 and has no connection with the "War on Terra" other than in White House Press Hand-outs and the RNC's spin of the day.
With 52% Positives and 46% negatives I do not think you can reasobably call that 110%. It is about 4% above Impeachment proceedings.
As it stands now if the Election were held today and Bush was running against Al Bore - Bore would probably win decisively. And mind you I am not an Algore fan. As far as I am concerned "A Pox on both their Houses". However, there is no way you can make a case for widespread support. What you have is rabid unthinking support in SOME quarters. It is kind of like the Clinton Kool-Aid Drinkers arguing that there was no support for Impeaching Clinton. There was a lot and had Ken Starr not been loafing on the job (or more likely bought off) Clinton would have been tried for Treason. Maybe we can get it right this time.

There are many ways to answer that question, but apparently you missed my point. If the city council felt the same way, why didn't they say that? I can accept if they want to oppose a war on those grounds. I might not agree with them, but I think that's a bit more morally sound than deciding this issue based on selfish, NIMBYish grounds.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 21, 2003
LOS ANGELES ADOPTS GARCETTI RESOLUTION AGAINST WAR IN IRAQ; CITY BECOMES 104TH AND LARGEST CITY IN THE NATION TO PASS RESOLUTION FOR PEACE
Los Angeles: By a vote of 9-4 today, the Los Angeles City Council passed Councilmember Eric Garcetti's resolution calling on the Bush administration to pursue every diplomatic means available and opposing a unilateral war on Iraq. Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn concurred in the Council's action, signing the resolution the same day.
Councilmember Garcetti stated: "The City of Los Angeles has a long history of taking brave stands on international issues of conscience. We stood up against apartheid early on in that struggle; we passed resolutions in support of the Baltic Republics during the fall of the Soviet Union. War, moreover, is not only a matter of foreign policy. It will have direct effects on the Los Angeles -- from the hotel workers who will be thrown out of work when a war starts and our tourism industry halts to the federal anti-poverty and housing programs which will disappear as our government pours 9 to 20 billion dollars a month into a war effort."
Councilmember Garcetti continued: "This resolution makes Los Angeles the largest city in the country to pass a resolution opposing unilateral war. Whether in marches and rallies or in City Council meetings, the people's voices have been heard." On two separate days, City Council chambers was filled to capacity with supporters of the resolution, and thousands of petition signatures were collected by grass-roots activist group Neighbors for Peace and Justice.
The text of the final resolution, with critical leadership from Councilmembers Ruth Galanter and Tom LaBonge, is attached. The middle resolved paragraph (regarding Homeland Security and HR 764) was voted on as a separate matter and passed unanimously by all 13 members present. The last resolved paragraph (regarding funding for services for the homeless) was introduced as an amendment by Councilmember Jan Perry.
For further information, contact Josh Kamensky at 213/473-7013. R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, any official position of the City of Los Angeles with respect to legislation, rules, regulations or policies proposed to or pending before a local, state or federal governmental body or agency must have first been adopted in the form of a Resolution by the City Council with the concurrence of the Mayor; and
WHEREAS, the Congressional Budget Office estimates a military action against Iraq will cost the taxpayers of the nation between $9 billion and $13 billion a month, likely resulting in further cuts in federally funded projects and programs that benefit our city and its residents at a time when state and local governments are in crisis; and
WHEREAS, that cost would be borne by the people of the City of Los Angeles, who rely on federal funds for anti-poverty programs, for workforce assistance, for housing, for education programs, for infrastructure, and for the increased demands of homeland security; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that Saddam Hussein has perpetuated great human rights abuses with aims contrary to peace, and that the United Nations Security Council accordingly approved a program of weapons inspections; and
WHEREAS, the strength of NATO and of the United Nations rests on consensus and the rule of law; and
WHEREAS, the United States should make every effort to work within the United Nations framework and leave war as an option of last resort; and
WHEREAS, war in Iraq would take the lives of untold Iraqis, the vast majority of whom would be noncombatants; and
WHEREAS, California is home to more veterans than any other state in the nation, and Los Angeles has 597 employees, including 271 Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers, on military reserve who stand to be called to active duty, and as veterans and patriots these brave men and women know well the consequences of war and the human costs involved; and
WHEREAS, we support and appreciate the U. S. military personnel and law enforcement officials serving at home and abroad against global and local terrorism; and
WHEREAS, this unquestionable pride in and support for these brave men and women, who know well the human costs of war, prevent us from sending them off to war easily or lightly before exhausting all diplomatic means to avoid combat, and
WHEREAS, the Council should work towards improving the quality of life for all and enhancing public safety in Los Angeles and improving the City's ability to prevent and respond to terrorist attacks,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, with the concurrence of the Mayor, that by the adoption of this Resolution, the City of Los Angeles URGES the President of the United States to exhaust all diplomatic options available in dealing with the growing crisis in Iraq and exercise great caution before resorting to using military force; and OPPOSES a unilateral war against Iraq.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, with the concurrence of the Mayor, that by the adoption of this Resolution, the City of Los Angeles hereby includes in its 2003-2004 Federal Legislative Program support for federal funding for the initiatives outlined in correspondence attached to the file and support for H.R. 764, the First Responders Expedited Assistance Act, and any other similar legislation that would provide additional funding to first responders in the City.
RESOLVE to INCLUDE in the City's 2003-2004 Federal Legislative Program SUPPORT for federal legislation that acknowledges that veterans make-up 20% of the homeless on Skid Row; these veterans served our country bravely in past wars, sacrificing their mental and physical health only to be forgotten upon their return and left to fend for themselves; we must remember them and work to help them regain what they have lost. We must dedicate our attention to the needs of the homeless in our city, promote a renewed respect for these brave individuals AND make GREATER EFFORTS TO OBTAIN FUNDING FOR THEM FROM OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT and on a local level through the development of permanent, affordable housing utilizing both Prop 46 and Housing Trust Fund dollars.

It is so wonderful, though very late, that the plight of the homeless is being recognized and remedies are being called for. Taking money from warfare and bringing it to welfare is the way to get true security. We need to be vigilant that funding comes and is used wisely, well and compassionately. The homeless.men, women and children, are victims of various forms of violence and abuse. They all suffer from various mental, physical, spiritual, emotional and financial illnesses. Great patience, understanding and love will be required from those who will come forth to work with them. These workers must be paid accordingly for their efforts so all can benefit and a community can be built. We must do as we will and harm none..as we will it, so mote it be!
