LA Demo Breakaway Attacked!!!

Black Block Breakaway attacked by LAPD. At least 4 demonstrators clubbed by police that this reporter witnessed. 1 or more arrested. Police charged breakaway marchers.

Today's massive march against the war in Hollywood was the scene of a brutal police asault on breakaway marchers. Anarchists, Communists and other anti war protestors who intended to participate in a breakaway march down Sunset Blvd. to sites for peaceful die in's were attacked by LAPD officers on foot with clubs and by motorcyle cops using Psy-War tactics blasting sirens at deafening levels and charging en masse on the 200 or so demonstrators in todays Black Bloc Breakaway.
Earlier in the march Black Blockers joined by Not In Our Name marchers performed die in's on Hollywood Blvd. After reaching the end of the official march at Sunset and La Brea, those who had planned to breakaway had some dificulty gathering together due to the awesome size of the crowd estimated at 100,000 by the ANSWER Coalition organizers and at at least 50,000 by Steve W. an old time anti Vietnam war activist. This writer found the crowd to be at some points almost as dense as those at the Durga Festival in Calcutta, where the crowd grows so thick that one is literally lifted off ones feet.
After some initial cross communication, the Black Bloc marched up La Brea from Sunset, cut across on a side street and marched back down Orange in force to Sunset with locked arms chanting "No War But Class War", "What do we want, Revolution, When do we want it, Now", and "1 2 3 4 what do we want Class War".
As one of the demonstrators put it, "The state is the source of more terror than any so called terrorist group and what we need is to realize that it is the Capitalist class backed by the police/military state that is the enemy, not some dictator in Iraq. Let us unite as a world of under classes and overthrow all the dictators, whether they hide behind the facade of so called democracy or are more blatantly dictatorial".
Demonstrators then marched down Sunset chanting "Whose Streets, Our Streets". They kicked down street barriers, but otherwise were entirely peaceful. Locked arm in arm rows of masked Anarchists dressed in black, with flags,and banners reading "Anti War Action", "Breakaway Die-In" among others, soon were confronted by lines of cops. Many others had joined the Anarchists, including a large contingent from the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade and Not In our Name project. They joined together to confront the police.
The cops began jabbing the front lines of protestors with clubs, the demonstrators line held and then to avoid injury reformed in the middle of the block. Seeing that they were surrounded, they went to the side walk where they passed through the police lines in small groups reforming at Las Palmas where a group were pinned against a car and some were clubbed by cops, others were succesfully unarrested and others may have been arrested. At least one is thought to have been at that point.
The police had formed line of motorcycles blaring sirens at ear piercing volumes to intimidate demonstrators. Although the locked arm lines had been broken, groups of demonstrators stood their ground against this intimidation, only yielding under the pressure of superior force.
After several more charges, reinforced by truck loads of police in Riot gear, the demonstrators dispersed. The police in a show of force backed by violence, was a typical display LAPD overreaction. Nothing new in this city of police corruption scandals and the notorious beatings of persons of color, in this case Black by choice. - Gary Rumor.

A member of my affintiy group got sepperated when the police swooped in on the breakaway march. I did not see what happened, due to the chaos the rippled out of the wake of the police, any info would help. I know he was arrested and he has gotten in brief contact with family, but any eye witnesses would help. He is a tall black man, and was wearing a black panthers shirt, and a large afro. A good target for the racist LA police. I do not know if he is in contact with the national lawyers guild, and any contact phone number for the guild would be of help.

The Sunset Ave. skirmish

I didn't know till I read this post that I was in the breakaway march. I was just walking back up Sunset with my friends to get to my car. I fell back with the police line and saw most of what happened. It seemed to me the cops could have just withdrawn and avoided the whole problem. The kids did well and held their ground as best they could.

The big surprise for me was that the LAPD has rolled out a new weapon against us: SUV attack vehicles. These appear to be customized Suburbans, either black or midnight blue, outfitted with running boards. Hanging on to each side and piled on top, like a hayride from hell, are robocops wearing gas masks, and armed with grenade launchers. As intimidating as these things are, there's something comical about them too, maybe because of their Keyston Kops look. Also, I couldn't help thinking of vulnerable SUV's are to tipping over. One of the coolest things I saw was the kid on skates with the camera who taunted the police line and teased the cops by skating in again and agin to grab shots. He was like a fly they could never catch.

It's all fun and games for now. Once the war starts, it's going to get very serious.

lawyers guild monitors were supposed to follow us but we had a hell of a time getting through to them. I talked with Jim Laferty before the march and he introduced me to our monitor. I asked him for his cell number but he seemed more interested in hanging with his buddies.

I was part of the break away and it was very surprising. Despite the fact police surrounded us on all sides, the front column that ended up hitting and arresting a few weren't as organized as we expect. I was in the 2nd row of the bloc and we were able to turn and go aroundthe intial clash between the first row and the column of police. We split and sort of lingered around, going back and forth between the original first row and down towards Vine.

One of the guys at the front of the Black Bloc was acting only as a photographer. He wasn't wearing all black, he didn't have a mask, and in short he was a civilian. He tried to calm things down because the police were looking like they were gonna use their clubs (which they apparently did). The police weren't hearing it and shoved him to the ground.

Although it was broken up and we were surrounded, it was a pretty strong black bloc considering how LA usually doesn't have that strong of a presence. We also got more liberal support than we expect. When they were told to disperse they refused and when things started warming up between the first row of the Bloc and the police they started chanting, "the whole world is watching" pretty loud.

civilian riot?

The member of my affinity group who was arrested for "insighting a riot" last night in LA was simply documenting the black block's breakaway protest when he saw a underage girl trapped between police motorcycles, he was jumped by police and arrested with one other member of the block. once again for "insighting a riot" which is of course a lie. He was a photographer and the only people insighting a riot were the brutal police. Any eye witnesses would help with the pending court case. please contact me via email. I believe he is in touch with the lawyers guild too. He has numerous injuries which we are having documented by urgent care doctors.

Break Away March

I was with the Break Away March for it's entire length, beginning at the intersection of Sunset & LaBrea (ref.to photo: 1442, 1444, 1447) which then began to move North up LaBrea (ref. 1448, 1449). It turned East onto Lanewood Ave (ref. 1450) then turning South onto Orange Dr. and eventually turning East onto Sunset Blvd. Police caught sight & sound of the BAM while they chanted their slogans of peace as they turned onto Sunset (ref. 1451-B) . Police began to mobilize themselves within 60 seconds and were moving in behind them while motorcycle cops & other police vehicles appeared to loop forward via the adjacent streets running parallel to Sunset. The BAM continued marching forward moving toward Highland (ref. 1452) which had road barricades preventing through traffic from Highland onto Sunset west. This seemed to be when the police became more "heightened" by the BA. The march moved through the intersection, not disturbing the traffic yielded at a red light. From this point on (Highland & Sunset) to approximately Las Palmas & Sunset (ref. 1453,1454) is where the police "clamp down" occurred by strategically sweeping up the parallel streets to Sunset (ref.1455). Police used the tactic of encircling the marchers and refused them to proceed any further as they stood locked with their batons at waist level aimed at they protesters (ref.1456). I saw absolutely no violence or for that matter any physical motions towards the police from any single participant of the BAM (ref.1457,1458). Police officers struck & jabbed some of the participants at this point (ref.1456). Within 60 seconds of this moment at least 2 participants had either moved away from this scene (1456) or had been caught on the opposite side of Sunset but at any rate; this is where the female of these 2 was severely struck by an officer with his baton (ref. 1459). The other participant of the pair, a black male with Afro hair, seemed to put his body between the white female being struck and the assaulting officer, as an obvious move to protect her from the officer's attack. After this they were both arrested immediately -the female was pushed into an all black police vehicle that had absolutely no logo's or identification other than it's plate numbers. At this point I had taken no photos as I was being harassed by officers myself as I tried to continue with my photo documentation. Photos; 1460, 1461 are the next sequential shots taken after they had been arrested and driven away. Photos 1463, 1464, 1466, 1467 are the subsequent "loop & sweep" tactics the police made, advancing East toward the intersection of Sunset & Cahuenga Blvd. Eventually, the police hastily moved to protect the store fronts of Amoeba Records (ref. 1468,1469). I did not witness the aledged assault & arrest of one of the BAM participants since the crowd, though small, was too densely packed on the sidewalk as heavy traffic & shoppers moved slowly around. From the Break Away March's first turn onto Sunset at approximately 4 p.m., they stood in solidarity with their right to free speech for the less than a mile march (0.8 miles) that took them about 1 and half hours to reach upon it's final disintegration at the intersection of Cahuenga Blvd.

I was wondering the same thing. I was walking down Sunset with my mom when I saw the bloc running a little fast towards us, away from the police barrier, only to find cops running towards us from behind as well. I think this is what the author above was describing as the encirclement. Was there a plan to breakaway march on the sidewalk past the barrier?

Anyway, I hope everything worked out ok. I witnessed one guy get arrested on a shop corner, pinned down to the ground by about 10 police officers, and there were enough police cars to block the entire intersection. It was overkill to say the least.

I would like to join fellow libertarians during such protests, but I am reluctant in the face of all the trouble that must be put up with.

it looks like early March is our next big date unless Bush's war blows up first. nice timing! ....some major tactical convergences: global women's strike, code pink, and the global antiwar movement.

why breakaways? why feeder marches? why a radical feminist analysis?

because we are capable of more complexity and a more radical analysis at a massive global level.... and for the elitist masters of our world, that is the ultimate threat, the unmanageable threat, the nightmare scenario. let's do it!

Can this photo be used in court (is it digital or not).. anyone got other photos to help prove that he was in no way "inciting a riot" but being beaten by the po-lice.

Police officers purposefully tried running innocent, peaceful civilians over for no reason other than they wanted to get their jollies off. Protester

At Highland and Sunset, a group of confused kids were trying to start a riot. Those of us who have seen too much bloodshed from such stupid undertakings stopped them, while the police in that location showed considerable restraint.

There were at least 30 horses, twice that in motorcycle cops, two SWAT Suv's with battle geared officers, and two helicopters overhead. That is overwhelming force, and while I am proud of the hearts of such misguided heroes, their heads are seriously deluded.

Turning a peaceful protest into a fiasco with the police accomplishes NOTHING except getting innocent people injured, and creating cause for police rioting.

We stopped it there, and I wish I could have stopped the parts I knew nothing about until reading it here.

Though hotheads may not understand it, this is ANTI-POLITICAL behavior. It prevents large demonstrations from occuring, both by scaring the families that turned out, and by encouraging the police to treat protestors as rioters.

Political, in this fight, is what makes the junta leaders small, and the protest group large. Violence only shrinks the protest group, while strengthening the junta's rhetoric.

If people feel the need to act out fantasies of resistance to police, they should do so apart from peaceful protest. The half-million Iraqis who are slated to die in this attack are not helped by anarchistic behavior for which the police are amply equipped and organizationally prefer. It is a fool's game.

What the violent demonstrators told me was: "You've had your stupid fucking peaceful protest for five hours. Now it is OUR turn." Meanwhile, plenty of elderly, children, young teens, and utterly innocent peaceful protestors were attempting to disband safely after the most successful street protest in Los Angeles history. Stirring up the police put many innocent people at risk.

Because we stopped the violence linked directly to the protest zone, many of those people will turn out again, not knowing of the violence enacted by the cooperation of anarchists and their police opponents. That is not why WE march, and that is not the method of anything other than getting your asses kicked. We already did plenty of that during the Vietnam war protest, and it is a failed strategy.

Quoting rights and reality

The cops don't really represent the court of rights. They are enforcement. Without strong civilian control, the police are always a danger.

But rather than observe that 100,000 people with loud and offensive protest walked through the city without giving the police an overt reason to attack them, the agitators I met disdained the effort of that 100,000. So it wasn't just a more frustrated portion of the protestors who was acting out their grievances (acquiring fresh grievances thereby).

It was a group hostile to the concept of democratic protest en masse. It was a group intent on disrupting or degenerating the protest itself.

For SURE, there are lots of cops perfectly happy to violate your civil rights. Getting them to do so doesn't reveal anything but that fact. A primary moral view abstains from bringing down the police on the families.

Or are anarchists the enemies of peaceful people as well as the government? There were many innocent people on hand. You people should have shown them more respect, and not started shit to get them into danger.

I was a protestor.

The protest could have been far more effective. The purpose of the protest is to sway the opinions of the uninformed.

1) We must be more polite and more fun and more happy than our opponents. We wish to ATTRACT their support. We CANNOT force our views. A dead quiet demonstration would have far more effective. My personal dream is of a demonstration with sound coming entirely from bells. bicycle bells, temple bells, brass bells, etc. A pleasant happy sound would get far more and much better press than a bunch of obnoxious people spouting cliches and being obnoxiously loud.

2) Demagogues are counterproductive. We must become even more informed about the history of the region. Find out who Mossedeq was. Then using LOGIC, not emotion, to convince good people of the undesirability of this war, regardless of our personal feelings.

I was there mostly because I don’t like to be lied to by my government. However, I find the leftist bullshit almost as hard to take. It’s counter-productive. If that shit annoys me just imagine what the rest of America thinks. Just the facts that’s all America needs to know. Get your facts STRAIGHT. Don’t deviate from the subject. The only idea I had in common with most of the people there is that this war is wrong. I almost didn’t come because of all the side issues. Separate your hatred of Bush from the idea that the war is insane. Once people understand the war is insane they will naturally understand Bush is insane. If you try to convince people Bush is evil before you convince them the war is evil you will fail.

1) There WAS a legally elected Muslim government. Mossedeq in Iran. We overthrew that government and installed the Shah. Most Americans have never heard of Mossedeq. Once they look into it they will start believing you. Then you can tell them the US has also installed ruthless dictatorships in Chile, Central America, Vietnam and you will have some credibility.
2) This is not about Saddam. It’s better for us to agree and insist that Saddam is an asshole. The more we proclaim him to be and ass the more credible we will be when we also insist the war is really about the free flow of oil. It’s not even about the price of oil. They just want enough to sell, they don’t care about the price.
3) There is no group in Iraq that can rule without being oppressive. So even if we get rid of Saddam nothing will change. Both other powers in Iraq, the Shiites in the south and the Kurds in the north are offensive to most thinking people. The first Bush administration allowed Saddam to slaughter both groups because they want to weaken and then control all governments in the Mideast.
4) We have a right to compete just as the people in the Middle East have a right to get every penny they can for their oil. Conservation is the best way to reduce our dependence on and drive down the price of oil.
5) Martin Sheen and the rest of the Celebrities are counter-productive and hypocritical as long as they live limousine lifestyles. They do not speak for me. I would rather listen to someone who is not famous, lives simply, and speaks the truth. The leftist cliches make us look fanatical and ignorant. The best spokespersons for our cause are people who you think would support the war, such as General Schwartzkopf. One famous rightist who is against the war is worth 100 famous leftists against the war.

Some more thoughts:

1) Funny signs are better than hateful signs.

2) Don't argue with rightist taunters. Wish them well. Give them the name of Mossedeq and request they look it up on the Web.

3) Do not trash anything. Be sensitive to merchants who loose a day’s receipts because of the protest. Buy something from them and be nice to them even if they don’t agree with you.

4) Live what you preach. Don't drive an overly large car. Eat vegetarian. Live in a modest house.

We have to WORK harder if we want to succeed. You may not like to be nice to rightists but that is the work.

ANTI WAR ACTION

The Breakaway action was to Give activists an opportunity to take the rebellion to a more intensified level and to have a bit of fun. Listening to the same old leftist speeches is a bore. We wanted to have a few die ins among the public. People were invited to bring costumes and to show Black Bloc solidarity.
The police in their overreaction did not allow us to have the kind of playful fun we had intended. They made it a heavy scene with their violent attitudes and actions. They were definate party poopers.
To those who say we would have been more effective if we had been more secretive, I can only say that that wasn't the point, I mean exactly how succesful can a Die in Be? Or perhaps if some wanted to fuck shit up like in San Francisco, well exactly how much success can be in breaking a few windows. I feel that we were perfectly successful in revealing the violence inherent in the state and particularly in the LA police.
We wanted to have light comedic theater, the cops gave us heavier dramatic violence, still it wasn't R rated blood and gore, it was more like a PG rated movie, So we got to march and chant, they got to beat and bust. Who won? Well if you have to use primitive calculations based on overall propaganda value, we won. Most people were sympathetic, nobody was hurt that bad, and the arrests were fairly minor. Although the main stream media ignored us, when do they ever pay much attention to anarchists unless there is significant violence, after all isn't that our role, to play the Angry Ones?
We arn't out there to please the media, or the mainstream left or the conservatives or our parents or whomever. We are out there to please ourselves and to do our bit to foward the world revolution. It is primarily in the mind and if we came out of the experience feeling a bit more empowered then it was worth it. The big bad wolf of the LAPD was faced and we may have been a bit brused, overall it seemed that we came out feeling like we needed to get better at what we do, not demoralized.

Exposing something already well known

A 'die-in' is perfectly reasonable protest. However, this breakaway at least drew a violent element; one is direct defiance of the mass protest just concluded, not a part or a version of that protest.

As for the idea of 'leftism,' this is the biggest canard in the right-wing media, and quoting it in defense of violence is hilarious. People are opposed to genocide----that is not a 'leftist' issue.

Furthermore, a protest sign is not an education. The idea that 'No War for Oil' is simplistic is stating the obvious. It is code for a much more informed point of view. Everyone who is serious knows this.

Fourth, the idea that humorous signs work better than accusatory signs; this is based, imo, on the often mistaken view that those supporting the war are not simply racists. My experience in this protest action is that most who are still in favor of the flimsy lies of Madcowboy BU ll SH it are in fact racists----and ridicule is the proper method for bringing these views to the surface, so at least their lies may end.

Around mass peaceful protest, the violent often appear. Whether 'right' or 'left,' they are both unwelcome invaders. They haven't learned the wisdom of nonviolent protest, or if they have, they haven't realized that they will be responsible for the worst of the people they attract.

Martin Sheen is an actor; as is Sean Penn (a much better actor). Actors are not 'normal,' as anyone can easily tell. Nonetheless, rallies do not have the same purpose as marching or general protest. These are entertainments (including education and moral support). I support Sheen and Penn, even if I do not care to hear their speeches.

In my opinion that puts the Black Bloc movement in a position where it can propose an option to the public and not impose.

If the anti-war movement is going to be limited to concerns about baby killers the movement is going to fail inasmuch as the Vietnam anti-war movement failed. The Black Bloc is at least providing more than some hippy nostalgia. Unless we want to choke mainstream america to death with boredom then we have to use imaginative tactics like a Die-In.

Breakawayed?

No, the portion of the breakaway I ran into was at Highland and Sunset, directly tied to the main rally area, and endangering a number of people who were simply trying to leave the area.

The suggestion that the Vietnam war protest 'failed' is completely ridiculous. Protest isn't perfect, but that protesting accomplished a number of social changes, and provided the support that heroes like 'Pentagon Papers' Daniel Ellsberg needed throughout his struggle (which did, in fact, end the war through freaking Nixon out enough he busted into Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office).

If you want excitement, how about disrupting the orderly activities of Fox News with a die-in? How about marching in front of Fox doing goosesteps and Heil Hitlers? How about compassionately berating people for peace in big malls? There are thousands of such opportunities to do something a bit more exciting, though if you ask me, Saturday's protest was plenty exciting on a whole bunch of levels.

The die-in's was not the problem. The intentional creation of a police riot was. At the very least, such shenanigans shouldn't be started up until the people who do not wish to participate can clear the area.

Btw, the word 'hippie' is a slur invented by Newsweek or some other mainstream magazine to derogate an entire counter-culture, most of which was not at all 'hippie-like.'

There were people who tried to live communally, but why they should be called something they didn't call themselves remains to be clarified.

To use this term, and derogatorily at that, is to perpetuate what was a myth to begin with----one intended to disrupt the war protest.

The drummer at Highland and Sunset was making the situation worse, and I asked him to knock it off, which he, to his credit, eventually did.

You want to attack the LAPD? Gee, how come that wasn't a part of the peaceful demonstration? Because it is outright stupid.

Btw, the cops are understaffed and underfunded. If you think you're going to get treated well, remember that they are all having pretty bad days. When police are understaffed, there are fewer voices of reason in the ranks. This is not to excuse the police their flaws, many inhuman and in violation of civil ethics. But attacking them just turns the ugly side out.

Bratton showed restraint, certainly compared to the new NY police chief.

Revolution is an idiotic idea in the technological age. You are outgunned. Only surprising acts of peace will bring about the future you SAY you desire.

No one attacked the police? Maybe not with helicopters. The would-be rioters at Highland/Sunset were breaking up the police barracades, and throwing various pieces of it at the cops----along with a lot of invective, fingers, and stomping around looking foolish (to cops).

This is a long demonstration cycle, and the issue is NOT the LAPD. This summer, if things don't improve nationally, you can count on street riots and the flames we last saw with Rodney King. Then you can get your ya-ya's off and mazel tov.

I don't support your violence; my only interest is in separating it from nonviolent protest, which has a different agenda, considerable wisdom, and a solid gold track record in several regards.

It is not 'BU ll SH it' to protest without fighting the police on their turf. It is effective...witness the delay in the war plans that has resulted, in great part due to an unprecedented turnout of generally-peaceful protesters worldwide.

I just wish instead of fighting the police, people wishing to bend the law would do more constructive protest, like disrupting the fascist doings of Fox News somehow.

the guy being assaulted is actually a friend of mine, and apparently the cops-- four of them-- ganged up on him and ended up breaking his elbow. when he filed a suit, his case was rejected by the judge.
