Resolution Opposing the Bush Administration’s War on Iraq

by Social Fairtrade Network Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 at 1:21 PM

Jan 27th '03 Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO passes anti patriot / anti war resolution.

Resolution Opposing the Bush Administration’s War on Iraq

WHEREAS, union members and leaders have a responsibility to inform all working people about the issues that effect our lives, jobs, and families and to be heard in the national debate on these issues; and

WHEREAS, the billions of dollars spent to stage and execute this war are being taken away from our schools, hospitals, housing and Social Security and services for the poor in the midst of the greatest economic crisis in recent memory, even as the Bush Administration simultaneously plans even more giveaways and welfare for the rich supporters; and

WHEREAS, the Bush Administration has spearheaded a renewed assault on organized labor which includes use of Taft-Hartley against dock-workers, excluding over 50,000 federal airport screeners’ right to organize privatizing nearly 200,000 federal jobs covered by American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and removing collective bargaining rights from these employees; and

WHEARAS, the war in the pretext for attacks on labor, civil, immigrant and human rights: and

WHERAS, the Bush Administration’s drive for war serves as a cover and distraction for the sinking economy, ongoing corporate corruption and layoffs; and

WHERAS, the Bush Administration and Congress’ US Patriot Act serves to undermine labor’s right to organize and fight anti-immigrant attacks by expanding the government’s ability to detain non-citizens, to conduct telephone and internet surveillance and to carry out secret searches.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO stands firmly against the Bush Administration’s drive to war and calls for a reorder of our national priorities which must include allocation of resources to provide jobs, education, health care, a clean environment and social justice; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO will work so that organized labor, the national AFL-CIO and the many allies of working men and women take a stand against the U S Patriot Act and Homeland Security Act; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO will work so that organized labor, the national AFL-CIO joins other organization, and community allies to actively promote and participate in activities opposing the Bush Administration’s drive to war.

Take the Protest to the Next Level

by Gary Rumor Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at 8:41 PM
Garyrumor@aol.com

Time to escalate the cost for the governments war plans. Direct Action Event at Feb. 15th Demo. Look for Flyers or contact above. Advocate general strike if war starts. Don't work, don't go to school, don't shop. Prepare for non cooperation now. Let the Bushites know that this war will not be cost free at home. Impeach Bush. Class War not Imperial War.

C'mon Gary

by fresca Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at 11:45 PM

C'mon Gary, can't you squeeze in a few more silly slogans? Just so you know, you and you anti-war buddies comprise about 1/10 of one percent of the US population. I feel fairly confident that your "strike" at the used record store won't cripple the rest of us THAT much.

slogan rich

by whatever Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at 4:33 PM

Fresca, it seems you know a lot about slogans. Here is a good one, ... now listen close: " you and you anti-war buddies comprise about 1/10 of one percent of the US population". Check the irony. If that isn't swallowing shit I don't know what else is. Can I ask, did you actually go out and take a poll or are you just aping whatever you hear off the newswire? #$%#$%

Little help?

A) I suppose I know as much as the next guy about slogans. What's your point?

B)The statement of fact that the "anti-war" crowd comprises DAMN little of the US population is not an example of irony. I suppose you meant to say something else. When you think of the correct literary device, let me know which one I used.

C) Nope, I didn't take a poll all by myself, but I did do a little math and I was wrong. You all actually comprise more of a segment than I thought. I appologize. Using several different indymedia site estimates, which would tend to be liberal in their estimates, wouldn't you agree, I used a fiqure of one million protesters. Certainly not all in attendance are anti-war; some are journalists, some are fringe protesters and some just curious, like myself. But lets say a million. And for each one in attendance, let's say they represent another 8 Americans. So that's 8 million Americans against the war. That fiqure divided by the population (289 Million) gives a percentage of about 2.7%. Not very substantial.

So. Any more sharp comments?

Spirit Counts

by Brother Jonathan Friday, Feb. 14, 2003 at 12:09 AM

At the time of the American Revolution about 1/3 of the population actively supported the Revolution, 1/3 opposed it, and 1/3 didn't give a shit.

The Ayes Have it.

Spirit and Courage matter. The louder the Shills yelp means the more effective we are. Their job is to try and kill your morale. When you know that it no longer has an effect - because you already know they lie.

Don't delude yourself Brother Jonathan

by Bush Admirer Friday, Feb. 14, 2003 at 6:32 AM

Sometimes, when you go to the zoo, the monkeys are active. Other times, when you go to the zoo, the monkeys are sleeping.

It's like that with protesters and New York too.

Why would anyone give a rat's ass whether the protesters are active or sleeping.

The only message they ever succeed in sending to mainstream America is: "Look at us, we're really weird."

I don't have time to check in with more than one board. I like the fact that L.A. Indymedia has a decent computer setup so things move quickly. Also like the fact that they have a link to recent comments.

I used to post some to Portland but only drop by there occasionally.

From time to time I'll stop by and post here:

Texas isn't as much fun because we don't have as many screwed up liberals here as they do on the left coast. Thankfully, people around here don't even know what an Anarchist is -- and wouldn't believe it if they did ;-)

small percentage

So, it seems that fresca'a opinion is that might=right and that if the mob decides that they want to carry on with a particular action, what they are doing cannot possibly be wrong. Well as long as we have that mentality, ONWARD with war against Iraq! After we're done there and we have our oil let us go and rape peasant girl in Vietnam and when we get back home we can kill some kittens for a nightcap. What do ya say fellas? Let's give in to mob mentallity.

Can you even concieve of the notion that you actually might be wrong and that the "mob" might be right? I don't think anyone, well, at least not me, is actually hoping for a war. If Sadam took one of the many offers of sanctuary and exile and there was still a threat of war, I'd be the first one marching with you. But he has to go.
