wondering
I was just wondering why didn't KPFK radio help announce the protest at the Nixon Library on Saturday at all. I found out about it at the last minute and I attended with a few friends and I thought that it was a great event. I listen to KPFK radio all the time and I was surprised that they kept announcing the ANSWER march in SF but no mention at all of a local march right here in Southern CA. Isn't this radio station supposed to be public community radio locally? or are they just a mouth piece for ANSWER?
I hope that next time they actually do what they claim to be doing and support local grassroots organizing efforts and announce important protests that are held right here locally in Southern CA.

The first question we need to ask is, did the organizers of the Orange County demonstration contact KPFK and ask for the announcement and publicity to go out? If so, who did they speak to,write to meet with?
Unfortunately, KPFK is not necessarily organized at the present time to go out themselves and find out all the events to announce and publicize--they respond to being contacted, and sometimes a lot of work needs to be done to make sure they cover an event.
For example, I can say on behalf of Coalition for World Peace that we contacted the station and asked for a meeting before Christmas to discuss announcements about Jan 11 in LA and Jan 18 in San Francisco.
Perhaps the OC demo was not given adequate coverage by KPFK, but I don't know what to attribute that too without knowing more...
Certainly, KPFK is NOT just in ANSWER's pocket, they also did a lot of work for Not In Our Name's Oct 6 demo, again because that was heavily promoted at the station itself....

Just came across this while i was downloading pictures. I was kind of wondering the question that the original poster asked.
Actually yes a goup of us took on the task to contact KPFK a while ago. We faxed 4 different press releases, we emailed almost the entire contact email list that is on the website for KPFK, we called (mystel about 4 times) and i know other organizers who also did call.
I don't know why there was no coverage or even announcment. We got better coverage and help from coporate media.. and that kinda sucks.
I personally had about 10 different people come up to me at the event on Saturday and ask us why it was not announced on KPFK.. One girl from Egypt who actually perfomed told me that she had heard about the event from KFI AM 640 Radio.. that was a huge surprise.
But I thought we did everythign right, we contacted KPFK as much as we could, i thought they were covering it, and I guess they didn't. Maybe they will next time, maybe they wont.. we'll see i guess

when i was driving home from the la demo listening to the last few minutes of coverage of the rally, i heard roy of hollywood announce the demo very clearly.. im pretty sure it was mentioned on the morning show too... if you are asking why it wasn't mentioned on the adam shapiro public service announcement... well, it sounded to me like that was a blanket announcement for all of pacifica, not just for los angeles. i come to this conclusion as it didnt mention phone #s, just websites, and encouraged people to go to either dc or sf. that's the announcement i heard the most.
just a thought...

It was during one of those station breaks when they read a list of local events. Soon afterwards I got an announcement from the Green Party of Orange County. I think it was before the L.A. rally, but I'm not sure.

Sonali announced it on "The Morning Show" a few times. I think they downplayed that to drive up the numbers in SF & DC. Either way, for Orange County, 800 is great. Don't forget about the weekly demo in Orange County across the street from South Coast Plaza at Anton & Bristol, EVERY Friday night from 6pm to 7pm. Last week we broke the 100 people mark! Let's see if we can keep that constant to drive the war mongers out of office and out of war!
