Welcome to Borders Hollywood. Midnight Special is closing down, so come on in.
They've done a good job of covering it up, but that monstrosity being built at Sunset + Vine (NW corner) is going to be a BORDERS bookstore.
Today, in order to build their scaffolding, or something, they cut all of the trees down on that corner of the intersection - the ones that line Vine street.
I propose action, but it's already too late. The building is nearly complete, and the trees are already cut.
But you'll never see me there.

I won't set foot in a Borders bookstore.
I walked into a local independent bookstore today.... "33 1/3 Books" at Sunset and Alvarado. It's a good store that needs your support, but I thought upon entering, "it's so threadbare."
Such is the "freedom" supplied by the marketplace. The BIG fish either eat up or chase out the little fish. Small "Mom & Pop" stores are destroyed and everything is gobbled up by the huge corporate chains.
That is not a model of freedom... it's not even the capitalism you've been trained to think of as a holy institution. It is nothing more that total MONOPOLY and it's completely taking over our lives. I remember "Mom & Pop" grocery stores in my neighborhood... now it's nothing but big corporate chains selling us food.
My God... this has to stop. There are still independent bookstores in this city... SUPPORT THEM. Don't give your money to those who strangle freedom and culture.

I like Borders. I like Barnes & Noble even more. They both have a huge collection of books at the best prices, good food and coffee at their cafes and plenty of room to find a place to sit & study.
I like small quirky bookstores too, but let's not ennoble them merely because they haven't the wherewithal to compete with the big guys. The fact is that Borders and Barnes & Noble provide the public with what they want at better prices than most of the small stores. They also provide a number of services not found at smaller stores. Their hours are excellent, and their customer service is just as good or better than the small stores.
And if Borders is opposed to Unions, well then I say bully for them! Unions are the kiss of death. They extort money from the rank and file and use it for political campaigns that the rank and file may oppose. The union will raise wages, true, but the organization which gives these raise and benefit adjustments must make up for the loss in revenue somewhere. Wanna guess where? Higher prices. Great. So you want Borders to unionize so that they cannot fire bad workers, must pay them more, cannot discipline them when they don't work, and then we get to pay more for our books and won't want to stay there because it'll be dirty and disorganized. Great plan.

Hollywood has been a lost cause for years and years. It's been overrun by gays and brain-damaged movie stars like Alec Baldwin. It's technically part of America, but not really.
Agree 110% with Simon regarding labor unions.
Our American labor unions have been very very helpful to workers. More precisely, they've been helpful to workers in Malaysia, Taiwan, India, Mexico, China, etc. American labor has tenaciously and dogmatically insisted on making America an unfriendly manufacturing site. As a result, manufacturing jobs are gone from here.

Industrialists have insisted on making manufacturing unfriendly to workers.
The glass is 1/2 empty or half full. What way do you cut it. Seems like you don't like 40 hr. work weeks, health care etc...

I like that Borders vandalism game. Only I think I'll change it to target the ridiculously overpriced and woefully stocked Mom and Pop stores.
Let's go.
We'll shut 'em down in no time.
