Today’s symbol has become known world-wide for victory in peace and truth. http://electronicintifada.net/diaries/archives/00000139.shtml and http://www.jebhemelli.org/images/iran/photo6.jpg Tehran University Students Demonstrating For Liberty, Justice and Democracy - July 1999
For a brief account of its earlier origin and symbolism http://rosella.apana.org.au/~mlb/cranes/symbols.htm#Sign
An even earlier account places the symbol in the 1500’s. During the wars between France and England the French would amputate the index and middle finger from captured English archers rendering them incapable of using a bow. As an act of defiance in battle the English would raise their hands and display their two still very connected digits.
Some are turned off by the “V” sign and are proposing a “Wow” sign.
http://www.wowzone.com/wowclub.htm I have to admit raising my hand to extend the “W” would be a turn off considering who’s the prez.
