SMASH THE SLAVE LABOR INJUNCTION!

by Steve Hampton Wednesday, Oct. 09, 2002 at 8:50 PM
redwave2001@yahoo.com

Bush is going to court seeking an injunction ordering the West Coast longshoremen back to work, invoking the slave labor Taft-Hartley Act. This law was written by ultra-right Republican Robert Taft, passed as part of the post-WW2 reaction, and is THE main union-busting tool of the capitalist state. The last time a President tried to invoke was Jimmy Carter in 1978, and he failed. Let's make sure Bush fails this time, too. For a general political strike to smash the slave labor injunction and stop the war with Iraq!

As was expected, Bush has intervened in the West Coast longshoremen's lockout, seeking an injunction under the slave labor Taft-Hartley Act. This reactionary, oppressive, anti-union law was written by ultra-right Republican Robert Taft, passed as part of the post-World War Two reaction, and is the main tool of the capitalist state for attacking and suppressing unions. It has not been invoked by any President for almost a quarter of a century now. The last time a President tried to get an injunction under the Taft-Hartley Act was in 1978, when Jimmy Carter tried to suppress the coal miner's strike-- and failed. Bush should not be allowed to get away with this outrageous attack on labor and blatant union-busting. It is all the more outrageous in this case because this is not a strike, but a lockout. The longshoremen did NOT go out on strike. They were willing to work, even though their contract had expired. The PMA (employer's association) locked them out, and refused to let them work. For a general political strike to smash the slave labor injunction and halt the attack on Iraq!

What is a "lock out"??

by T-Mex Wednesday, Oct. 09, 2002 at 9:25 PM

Hmmm?

A lock out is when MANAGEMENT keeps the union out!

That is what is happening here.

The Union didn't strike!

Bush is using the Taft-Hartley act to make MANAGEMENT put the workers BACK TO WORK!

It Doesn't matter!...

If it's the Union or management it's directed at this time, it was DESIGNED to affect the workers! We need to show our support for the Longshoremen! If you're a truck driver for the Teamsters, don't haul any loads to or from ships under a Taft-Hartley edict! As a consumer, boycott all goods shipped in from overseas(we should be doing this already to combat globalization). Check the labels, if it doesn't say "made in USA"(even this is no gaurentee, but the chances are better it's not imported), DON'T BUY IT!
