Gorgeous photos

by San Franciscan Tuesday, Sep. 17, 2002 at 4:42 PM

All the young people look fabulous out there in the hot LA sun. A kiss and a hug from San Francisco to all of you, young and old. Blessed are the peacemakers, for we shall inherit the earth. To the younger generation: We will put an end to war this time. We have learned from the mistakes of the 20th Century and in this 21st Century, we are going to get it right!

Exponential!

by John Wednesday, Sep. 18, 2002 at 1:30 PM

The LA rally at MacArthur Park last Sunday to the the Anti-War (et al) Protest & March this last Saturday, the 14th, saw an exponential growth from approximately 300 to around 2,000 protesters (less than one week apart!), was a great success and foreshadows even better things for the upcoming protest:

Great appreciation to ANSWER, all who participated, spread word by voice, e'mail and flyer, as well as HUGE kudos to Pacifica Radio at KPRK 90.7 for fighting to stay free.

The accounts of the rally and march on 9/14, in my opinion, downplayed the actual drive and force it had. It was far more than "spirited" and we protested far more than just the "administration-corporation's" war movement. One of the many popular cries was "George Bush, you can't hide! We charge you with genocide!". Corporate criminality, stolen elections, globalization, racisim, classism, counter-productive and lack of domestic health, welfare and education policies, the media and our threatened civil rights and freedoms were also crimes that were called out for the world to hear.

News channel 7, 11 and a couple of foreign stations attended, in addition to helicopters and a moderately large police escort and distant back-up "riot" force.

The thousands of commuters passing by the protests were VERY vocal in support of the rally, we even had a few park and join in...we were all rather suprised. It goes to show that you never know until you act! So get out there! :-)

NOW... my call to the planners and supporters of the upcoming 'Refuse & Resist!', 'ANSWER' and 'Not In Our Name' October 6th and 26th demos is this...

CAN WE FIND ANOTHER, MORE PUBLIC AND ACCESSIBLE LOCATION?

I've been to Westwood Federal Bldg a couple of times in addition to Saturdays VERY SUCCESSFUL march...BUT...this movement is tooooooo important to have it in such a "police controlled" environment. We were escorted and regulated far too much. However impressive and encouraging the turnout and statement, as well as the small, but growing media acknowledgment, WE NEED TO SHOW THE PEOPLE THAT THEY'RE NOT ALONE AND MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM TO JUMP IN. The participation will increase EXPONENTIALLY.

Westwood on the weekends is nearly a ghost town. I believe, and I echo the sentiments of a number of participants at Saturdays march, that it is imperative that we shout loud and publicly...not to an empty federal building and uncaring, deserted inconsequential commercial center. If we want to target a commercial center and call in the populace that is unknowingly funding and supporting many of the problems with their $ let's march through and around the Beverly Center. Acquiescing to "state approved and controlled" marching routes and time frame is like taking aspirin to cure a cancer. We become repressors of the very movement we are trying to build.

Please consider another, more public and productive site. I will also bring this up at the 'R&R! October 6th Demonstration Planning' meeting on the 19th.

If anyone else feels similar, please contact the organizers and share you support of another, more public and accessible site for the upcoming marches.

Refuse & Resist!
Not In Our Name
International ANSWER Coalition

Thank you again! The things you are doing are imperative to our freedom and intricately appreciated!

In bocca al lupo!

The march

by Christine Friday, Sep. 20, 2002 at 12:48 PM

I think Santa Monica would be a great location - very busy at weekends near the beach and 3rd Street Promenade.

My camera wouldn't work at this march - does anyone have a photo of the dog wearing the sign that said "I lift my leg on Bushes"? If anyone could post a pic of the dog and sign I'd love to see it. Thanks!

JUST REMEMBER THE PRICE OF YOUR FREEDOM IS PAID FOR BY THE BLOOD OF TRUE AMERICAN HERO'S SERVING OUR COUNTRY HONORABLY. I WONDER IF DURING THE 1930'S WOULD YOU PEOPLE HAVE PROTESTED WAR WITH GERMANY AND HITLER? 3,000 DEAD ON 9/11 AND IT'S THE FAULT OF THE UNITED STATES? INSTEAD OF SKIPPING SCHOOL TO HAVE A FUN PARADE AND MAKE YOUR PATHETIC EGOS FEEL MORE IMPORTANT YOU SHOULD DO REAL WORK TO HELP BUILD THIS GREAT NATION AND FURTHER DEMOCRACY FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD.

MR WALSH WAS 100% CORRECT IN HIS PITHY COMMENTS RE YOUR "FUN PARADE." WHAT BESIDES A PARADE ARE YOU DOING FOR THE PEOPLE OF IRAQ? HOW ABOUT PICKING UP A RIFLE AND HELPING LIBERATE THEM FROM A MURDEROUS DICTATOR? I GUESS WAVING SIGNS WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND POINTING FINGERS AT YOUR OWN COUNTRY IS THE EASIEST THING TO DO. OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS SHEDDING BLOOD TO LIBERATE PEOPLE FROM TYRANTS EXPECT NO LESS FROM YOUR ILK.

Once again this generation shows that they have learned well the lessons taught under our esteemed former president Mr. Clinton. Apathy, self-centeredness and "looking out for number 1". When faced with tough times, do nothing but blame and whine instead of doing what needs to be done. They should pause and appriciate that they HAVE the right to assemble and voice their opinion. What would happpen to citizens of Iraq if they tried the same under a ruthless dictator who has not thought twice about committing genicide on his on people.
To quote Voltar "I may not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.". Thats what our brave men in woman in our Armed forces have done and contunue to do to this day.

Veterans Day Nov.11th

by USMC90 Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002 at 10:10 AM

Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye.

Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity.

Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem.

You can't tell a vet just by looking.

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back at ALL.

He is the drill instructor that has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand and easily startled by firecrackers.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.
He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protestor to burn the flag."

" I WONDER IF DURING THE 1930'S WOULD YOU PEOPLE HAVE PROTESTED WAR WITH GERMANY AND HITLER?"

1) The United States was not at war with Germany in the 1930s; only the British and the Russians.

2)Most of the support for war in the United States (about a third of the population) came from the left and liberals. The Republicans strongly opposed war with Hitler and embraced a policy called 'Isolationism'. One of their most popular non-political public figures was Lindbergh (who accepted a medal from Hermann Goering in 1938, after Britain had declared war on Hitler and WW2 was underway)

by ....... Friday, Nov. 01, 2002 at 2:08 AM

Ah .. you're right there. My bad. Several months off on that one.
Still nothing nearly as awful as claiming the US was at war with Germany throughout the 30s!!
My point still stands. The Republicans and the right wing were behind the pro-Nazi isolationist movement, and the US didn't go to war until December of 41. And even then, it was Germany that declared war, not the US.
When Lindbergh accepted the medal, the Nazis were in full swing and war was just around the corner, at least with Britain and France. Don't forget that Nazi forces had already taken part in actions in Spain against the International Brigade volunteers from Britain and the US.
My dates were a bit off. But my point still stands.

History Lessons

by Cliff Clavin Friday, Nov. 01, 2002 at 8:54 AM

If you want to paint the Republican party of the 1930's as Nazi sympathizers or apologists, I beleive you are way off base. There was in America up until the advent of the Second World War a very profound Isolationist attitude, which was based on General Washington's admonishment that the United States should avoid foreign entanglements. President Wilson was instrumental in founding the League of Nations after the First World War, but the US would not participate in it due to this overwhelming isolationist attitude. There were sympathizers with the Nazi cause in America, but to portray them as majority Republican is inaccurate.

Now, if you want to look at your lefty friends, they don't show too well under the spotlight of history. The Socialists, the Communists and many Democrats wholeheartedly supported Stalinism and oppossed war with his good ally Hitler right up to June 22, 1941 when the Germans turned on Russia. Then, suddenly, it became a moral imperative to rid ourselves of the menace of National Socialism.

These same people who showed such concern for the plight of poor Mother Russia in 1941 were silent for the previous two years when Russia invaded and annexed Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia; invaded and forced a punative peace on Finland, threatened invasion and extorted land from Hungary and Rumania, and then participated in the invasion of Poland and it's subsequent partition. They were among the loudest of voices clamoring to keep us out of international entanglements - until their master was attacked.

There is a rather humorous aside: Apparently, Pete Seeger had recorded an album which extolled the virtues of the Nazi-Soviet pact and praised both Hitler and Stalin. Then the Germans invaded. Seeger had to race to the recording studio to prevent the release of the album and recorded a new anti-Nazi one. What a difference a day makes.

MY QUESTIONING OF ONE PROTESTING A WAR WITH HITLER'S GERMANY IN THE LATE 1930'S WAS A RHETORICAL ONE. THANKS FOR YOUR ATTEMPTS AT IMPROVING MY KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY THOUGH. MY POINT WAS A COMPARISON TO YOUR PROTESTS OF WAR WITH A MODERN DAY TYRANT (SADDAM) BY ILLUSTRATING AN EXAMPLE FROM RECENT HISTORY OF WHY WAR OR THE THREAT OF WAR IS A NECESSARY MEANS OF DOING BUSINESS WITH THE LIKES OF A SADDAM, HITLER, OR THE LEADERSHIP OF THE TALIBAN. TO BE A SHEEP IN A WORLD OF SHEEP IS ONE THING, TO BE A SHEEP IN A WORLD OF WOLVES IS ANOTHER, BUT YOU WHO FORGET HISTORIES LESSONS WILL STILL BE PROTECTED BY THE WOLFHOUNDS WHO KEEP THE FLOCK PROTECTED. IT ALWAYS AMAZES ME HOW OPEN MINDED LIBERALS ALWAYS RESORT TO NAME CALLING, TWISTING OF FACTS, AND A CHANGE OF SUBJECT WHEN CONFRONTED BY LOGICAL AND SOUND ARGUMENTS THAT THEY CANNOT REFUTE. I KNOW NONE OF YOU SUPPORTED THE OPERATION IN AFGHANISTAN, BUT DO YOU THINK THE PEOPLE (ESPECIALLY WOMEN) ARE BETTER OFF TODAY AFTER WE HAVE ROUTED THE TALIBAN? DO YOU THINK THE PEOPLE OF KUWAIT ENJOY THEIR SOVEREIGNTY AFTER THE GULF WAR? WILL WE AMERICANS ENJOY THE FRUITS OF SADDAM'S WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION PROGRAM WITH A KILLING OF THOUSANDS MORE DO TO OUR INACTION? I WOULD ASK NONE OF YOU TO PUT YOURSELVES IN HARM'S WAY, I'LL HANDLE THAT FOR YOU AS WILL THOUSANDS LIKE ME. BUT I DO ASK THAT YOU CONSIDER WHICH RISK IS GREATER, INACTION OR A PROACTIVE ATTEMPT TO STOP ATTACKS ON OUR FREE PEOPLE AND OUR DEMOCRACY?

To paint this impending war, which will be on THEM, not Saddam, to be about the Iraqi people just insulting to the intelligence. Nice sentiment USMC90, pass it along

by 48 Friday, Nov. 08, 2002 at 2:09 PM

Maybe you should send this purple prose on to your boss, USMC90. I'm sure they'd bring a couple of tears to the chimp's eyes. I'd add a few lines though:

"He is the 40% of homeless on the streets of America."

"He is the thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of sick and dying and dead and insane from exposure to things like Agent Orange and depleted uranium."

"He is the poor dupe tricked through manipulation of his sincere patriotism into killing others in order to make rich men richer."

and...

"It is the soldier, not the entrepreneur, who has given rich fucks the freedom to practice capitalist exploitation."

I will thank our soldiers when they get real balls and rise up against the government they blindly serve.

DOES 9/11/01 MEAN ANYTHING TO YOU?

by TJ WALSH Friday, Nov. 08, 2002 at 6:13 PM

WERE ANY OF YOU AWARE OF WHAT HAPPENED ON 9/11 IN THIS COUNTRY? DOES FREEDOM OF RELIGION, SPEECH, RIGHT TO ASSEMBELY, RIGHT TO VOTE, PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, ETC. HAVE ANY VALUE TO YOU? ARE THOSE SAME VALUES WE HOLD SO DEAR BEING PROMOTED IN THE MIDDLE EAST (OTHER THEN ISRAEL)? I KNOW IT'S OUR FAULT FOR BUYING THE OIL FROM THE COUNTRIES THAT SELL IT, THAT IN TURN MADE THE POOR PEOPLE OF THESE COUNTRIES DETEST US AND OUR HORRIBLE NOTIONS OF FREEDOM, THAT LED TO FLYING PLANES INTO OUR BUILDINGS TO KILL THOUSANDS OF INNOCENTS. AND AREN'T WE ALL DEPENDENT ON FOSSIL FUELS? IS YOUR COMPUTER MADE OF PLASTICS? WAS IT SHIPPED HERE FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY BY A SHIP THAT RAN ON FOSSIL FUEL? IS YOUR ELECTRICITY PARTLY POWERED BY THESE FUELS? SHOULD WE NOT TRY TO PROTECT OUR GREAT REPUBLIC AND PROMOTE DEMOCRACY? HAS ANY NATION IN HISTORY PLACED SO MANY OF IT'S SONS AND DAUGHTERS IN HARMS WAY TO PROTECT OTHER COUNTRIES FREEDOMS AND HELP OTHER PEOPLES? DO PEOPLE RISK THEIR LIVES TO ENTER IRAQ FOR A BETTER WAY OF LIFE? WHAT IS YOUR FREEDOM WORTH AND WOULD YOU DEFEND IT? I FEEL MANY OF YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO MAKE THAT DECISION, IT'S SO MUCH EASIER TO PLAY THE VICTIM AND TO WHINE ABOUT INJUSTICE. RATHER THAN TAKE A STAND AND PUT YOUR BELIEFS ON THE LINE WHY DON'T YOU KEEP BEING HYPOCRITES. NO BLOOD FOR OIL? HOW MANY OF YOU COULD MAKE THAT SACRAFICE? NO THANKS, I'LL PUT IT ON THE LINE AGAIN TO MAINTAIN OUR STANDARD OF LIVING, AND I GUESS THAT MEANS YOU "SHEEP" BENEFIT AS WELL.

One of the 1st rules of debate is that if/when you attack your opponent, not their ideas, you lose.

Mark

by Mark Williams Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at 9:21 AM

Give me a break, I've decided that there is no justified reason for any of you to go to war (in your minds) STAND UP and grow a spine you jelly fish. The Iraqi Leader has killed more people since his inception than will be killed in a war to get rid of him (maybe you don't remember the corpse hanging from the crane in Kuwait after his invasion or the 10 year Iran/ Iraq war. This man is evil and there is no changing him, to stop a bully you have to be a bully! If there was no evil in this world then there would be no need for armies. So use your protest to stop the real killers of the world ie: TERRORIST!!! So to save countless others from his rein of terror count me in.

Stop the War

by Luisa Peña Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 at 9:35 AM

I am about to turn 17 in March and I would like to turn 17. We do not have the right to attack a country that hasn't done anything to us. We are trying to attack the wrong country. "President Bush" only wants to attack because he wants to fix the problem his father committed when he was in office. He doesn't want to commit the same mistake his father did. I am from Los Angeles and a lot of people here have had strikes but now it doesn't seen to matter anymore. I suggest we keep on protesting until the government listens to us.

We should......

by Hermosa Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 at 9:55 AM

i think that we should go to war...why? my reason is that Saddam will turn into another Hitler if we dont make a drastic decision now, he will gain too much power and will be harder to stop. Also if we dont go to war and end terrorism once and for all another Sept. 11 will occur.

How to prevent war

by Karla Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 at 9:57 AM

I think a good way to prevent war would be if president
Bush woud start taking more control on whatz happpening because if he doesn't do anything now Saddam Hussain will gain more power and there will be no way to stop him, just loke what happened with
Hitler. President bush should give about three more weeks and if they don't give up the nuclear weapons then we will need to go to war.If we ignore it we will die
cuz they are basically planing to use those nuclear gas
device to kill us, thats their mission.

When is war right?

by I Wanna Know Saturday, Mar. 22, 2003 at 10:32 PM

So when is war right? After the U.S. left Cambodia to the Khmer Rhouge, more than 3 million people were slaughtered. After the U.S. left Vietnam, the Viet Cong rounded up and slaughtered more than 1 million people. Hussein has killed millions of Iranians and hundreds of thousands of his own people.
So the U.S. supplied Anthrax samples in the eighties - WHAT bearing does that have on whether or not he should be allowed to keep the 40,000 gallons of Anthrax he has hidden away now, as he threatens to use them (and as he attempted to unleash in Britain in the late 90's)?

4 war

by stacy Sunday, Mar. 23, 2003 at 12:33 PM

people who are against the war are crazy! What could you possibly thinking??? Really, I'd like to know. You need to understand that Sadaam is a physcotic murderer. Fine, try and stop the war. Then, he can blow up the whole world!!! You are worried about killing innocent citizens of Iraq. What do you think they are going to do if we let them go? Wake up! You are saying we are ignorant, you all have serious problems. Go ahead, go over and try to talk to Sadaam and get him to stop. Let's see if you are more persuasive than the United States Government! Spend your time doing somthing worthwhile. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the war and I don't like killing people, but everything else has failed. Do you think the army is trying to kill innocent citizens? I know people dying is not right, but that is nothing compared to what it will be if we let him go....

Who needs to WAKE UP?

by photographer Monday, Jun. 30, 2003 at 12:41 AM

stacy / logical,

"You need to understand that Sadaam is a physcotic murderer."

If so, why did we support him in the 80s?

"Fine, try and stop the war. Then, he can blow up the whole world!!!"

With what? He has nothing.. WMDs? where?

"You are worried about killing innocent citizens of Iraq."

approx 5570 - 7243 ( http://www.iraqbodycount.net ) innocent Iraqis killed. was it necessary?

"What do you think they are going to do if we let them go? Wake up! You are saying we are ignorant, you all have serious problems. Go ahead, go over and try to talk to Sadaam and get him to stop."

FIRST OF ALL IT'S SADDAM... ignorance? sure there are ignorant people on all sides of this issue.

"Don't get me wrong, I don't like the war and I don't like killing people, but everything else has failed."

Has everything else failed? How will we ever know? The US never let the inspectors finish their job.

I know its been some time since you've made your post.. but everything is blatantly clear now.. all the justifications for war in Iraq have collasped.. who needs to wake up now?

peace,

andrew s157
