Push polling for the Bush admin on MSNBC.com

by welfare/education advocate Thursday, Aug. 01, 2002 at 8:43 AM

MSNBC has a poll up today that seems designed to ensure that they'll get more votes for Bush's position on welfare. I hate these online polls, but I voted on this one and sent a message to MSNBC about the horribly slanted wording. I'd encourage other people to do the same.

Today's "question of the day" at MSNBC.com is "SHOULD WELFARE RECIPIENTS BE ALLOWED TO GO TO COLLEGE INSTEAD OF WORKING?" The way the question is worded seems designed to ensure that they'll get more responses supporting the Bush administration ("no" votes) and fewer votes supporting the idea of helping people on welfare learn enough that they can earn enough to get off welfare:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/778726.asp?0cm=c10

Although I hate these polls and think they're pretty useless, I went ahead and voted. I also sent a message to MSNBC.com (question@msnbc.com) about how slanted the wording is. Here's the message I sent:

"Research over many years demonstrates that more education leads to better paying jobs. Recent studies of the 2000 census show that this has become more true in recent years. Therefore, if we allow welfare recipients to go to college, we increase the likelihood that they will earn enough to get off and stay off welfare in the long run.

"Unfortunately, the way you've worded your question is misleading. Some people might assume from the way it's worded that welfare rules allow people on welfare to go to college indefinitely as a way of putting off work. That's not the case at all. Current welfare rules allow some college to count toward work requirements, but under very strict limitations. Because of the way you've worded this question, you've guaranteed that you'll see more "no" votes than "yes" votes. I am certain that if your question explained the existing rules better, more people would vote "yes" than will to the question you have posed."

Please feel free to vote, and to tell MSNBC to stop this kind of push-polling. It's either sleazy or incompetent, and either is inexcusable.

Joe From New Jersey

by Joe Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002 at 6:56 AM

Yes, because Congress represents the people and therefore congress should be heard. They have to debate the issue and take a stand. At this point in time, Congress would support the president in any action to overthrow Saddam Hussein. The Saddam regime has to be replaced by a democratic government. The allies would then join The U.S. in occupying Iraq and assist in setting up a democratic government. It would also mean investing in a new economy, which would strengthen the hand of the new government

Unfortunately, I was unble to attend College, due to being a low income family. However I worked and earned a respectable living without having tax payers support. Why should I, now pay someone else's College tuition, so they can get a better job than I had? Isn't Government housing, Medical, and food stamps enough? There is nothing wrong with starting with a minimum wage job and working up with time. The problem, now day's is everyone thinks they should should start with an Executive position instead of a job.

when will our people get back to taking responsibility for their own welfare----most of the kids i went to college -with worked there way through. had jobs in summer and worked part time jobs during the school year. alot of them had parents that had the money to carry them full load , but instead let their kids have some responsibility for getting their education and taught them that with hard work and some sacifice still is the best way to success. now days we have to many people wanting the government to take the responsibliity for their well being rather than getting out there and working.

War on Iraq

by Chris Smith Wednesday, Sep. 11, 2002 at 1:32 PM

There are some complaints in the U.S. about our government letting 9/11 take place as well as us planning for war. First on 9/11: The U.S. Constitution gives the government one main purpose and that's to protect us against attack. Yet everyone i.e. liberals wants us to cut military spending and fund every other Entitlement program (not covered in the Constitution). I say choose one or the other, I'm too taxed out to pay for all of it. Secondly, we say to the military, protect us BUT don't ever attack any nation until thousands of Americans are dead in the street and then if you do don't let one non military person in the opposing country get hert under any circumstances. Back to Iraq, they signed a treaty back in 1991. The U.N. i.e. socialist made resolutions and demands. Many of those demands have not been meet even once in those 11 years. Plus 4 years ago Clinton warned Iraq to let inspectors in per our agreement or else. After a couple of months, the inspectors were kicked out AGAIN and have not returned in 4 years. If anyone can show me any other possible hostile country, which made a similar agreement as Iraq, which has not meet the UN resolutions, like Iraq, and I will tell Bush to take them out too, if it keeps thousands (or millions in a nuclear attack) of high-tax paying Americans alive and well to fund those leftist entitlement programs all those liberals want.

My question is: Considering that George W. managed to evade any military INVOLVEMENT and failed to complete his military obligaton, will he sacrifice the Bush daughters, nephews, nieces, et al., along with thousands of American young people to a mideast "threat?"

war on iraq

by Alan from Ca Friday, Sep. 13, 2002 at 11:31 AM

The war with Iraq is important to the stability of the western world, this man saddam is a dictator with a thug mentality. His only concern is for his own agenda and his murderous and selfish delusional vision as the unifyer of the Arab world who's ultimate task is to rid the world of Israel & the evil empire I.e. the USA. and all who stand for freedom and a way of life more in line with the 20th century. And he believes that this is his mission as mandated by his God and the God of the moslem people not be confused with our god. He's not new to world the old testiment delt with him and his kind over 2000 years ago, and this is just the begining with this part of the world. Were in for a bumpy ride, but our god will prevail in the end,of that I am certain.

So damn in sane is what we should be calling Sudam Hussien, He is crazy to think that he will get away with what he is trying to pull. Just because Clinton was to busy running around with all of his women to worry about world affairs does not mean that Bush will sit on the side lines and let the USA be humiliated and ridicluled by the devience of Irag. We as a nation should support Bush's desicion to disarm Iraq. What if we wait like we did for the terrorist to attack on 9-11 what devestation will iraq bring to us. We know they have nuclear bombs and other weapons of mass destruction. Should we wait until we are targeted again and lose many more innocent victims.
TO those of you who do not support Bush's wishes ask your self this "Where will you be when Sudam attacks the US with his weapon of mass destructin and where will your children be?!!!!!!!

With all due respect to everyone's opinion as to wether or not we should attack Iraq,I feel this way about it. The people of our country are notorious for closing the barn door after the horse is gone, and this "Iraq" thing is no different.
Why not wait to see if he kills anyone and how many.At that point, leave it up to the American people if they feel enough people have been killed as to wether or not we attack Iraq.Of course it will depend on where it is these people are killed if indeed they are!
The American people always wait until something happens before reacting which is not a good trait to have as it shows other countries we have become"too civalized and too couch potatoed!" "Wake up America!!"

I fully support our President. It makes me angry, that the Democrats are playing politics with the issue. They said he was a threat during the Clinton administration.
Daschel is making a fool of himself. I am tired of the media spin reporting the issue. The people support this action. Your news dept. should start reporting the truth. Instead of twisting the details to fit your political agenda. Your job is to report the news from both sides. Not trying to manipulate the people, to your views. Russia and China both have financial resons for not getting on board with what the UN resolutions, that were set down years ago. Nobody cares what Hillery Clinton has to say about anything. She has no business discusing the issue. Find someone in the congress who has some experience. Isreal is not sending suicide bombers into public places and murdering innocents. They keep forgiving and trying to make peace. Yet the Palistinians keep blowing the chance.

What is all the talk about a preemptive strike? The terrorist struck first. In the President's address to the nation he stated, "I make no distinction between the terrorist and those that sponsor them."
Saddam Heusein is clearly both a terrorist and a supporter of terrorists'. So, how would stiking Heusein be a pre-emptive strike?

There has never been any proof provided linking him to terrorists.

Saddam has never attacked us.

The world is made of made of different players with different motivations. Look into it and you may see things a little differently.

Of course Osama sponsors and trains terrorist, should have been taken from power when invaded Kuwait, it was actually done, but not followed upon. Now then countries that are in United Nations not wanting to invade are ones making retributions from Iraq's cash flow, Russia and China should not be brought in after that Iraq has been decared war upon by the United States, which they will want in on for spoils of the war. The United States "Should" overthrow Osama, invade and hold Osama quilty of killing his own. War on Iraq

by L & R Lucas Monday, Sep. 30, 2002 at 5:38 AM

On this day we read an address by Ted Kennedy, 9-29-02. What a difference from his brother's address to the nation some time ago by John Kennedy.
Why should the nation pay attention to a man who left a girl he was with in the creek to die and then hid out.
9-11-01, the Cole, embassies around the world and on and on. Isn't it nice Saddam is sending money to the families in Palestine for their children to blow themselves up?
Senator Daschle's blow-up was desperate and embarrassing and inaccurate. He should apologize.

Nurse (BSN, MS)

I can't believe that our government is doing very badly.
I respect Mr. Bush as our Pres. but not his ideas. When the Senate question his plans, Bush response is loyalty and security of our country but that is out of the question. Our economy is going down fast and cutting the budget of health care like medicare, public aid and the veterans. I'm proud of the one who opposed in the Senate, who is thinking about the good of our nation. Loyalty we all have but the security of our Jobs and economy is going down hill. Solve one problem at a time. Find Bin Ladden and hunt him down first before we go to another problem. Even the world does'nt want to support the Pres. decision. You sometimes wonder if it's personal because his Dad have'nt finished the Job. Even the German people calls our President
the second Hitler because he does'nt listen to reasoning. We can't do anything but pray for guidance that he eventually make a right decision.....this time!

I am disguested to listen to representatives of this country using the media to play into the idealogy of our enemy. Officials like McDermott, Harken, Daschle should be held accountable and owe the President an apology. Sit them in a theater and replay the tapes of victims jumping out of the Towers. How could they put themselves above the security of the U.S. Throw them out!

war in Iraw

by Esther Kovach Friday, Oct. 11, 2002 at 3:47 AM

We should be more concerned with the sniper attacks in Md. and Va. (right under the capitol's nose) and try to solve this instead of trying to impose our will on another country. We have never been known as the aggressor; always the defender. Hitler, too, thought his way of dictatorship was the best for the entire world and here we are assuming that what is right for our country is also right for all others -- no difference, just imposing our way of life on others. If we want to defend human rights of the Iraq people, then why are we not going to Africa to alleviate their suffering. No oil in Africa. I believe our country has to first try all means of resolving this situation in Iraq through the United Nations before any military action is taken. It seems everytime some standards are set to be met, then the President adds some more, that are very unrealistic, which he knows cannot be met, knowing that Iraq will refuse his ultimatums. Saddam is capable of what he is accused but cool heads should prevail and give the process time to succeed with war being the very last alternative.

Sen. Byrd is to be congratulated. He is the only one, from both parties, who realizes what the end result could be, not only for our nation, but for the world.
We talk of saving lives by this action but in reality we could be endangering the lives of thousands of American boys if they go into Bagdah to overthrow the regime, not to mention the number of innocent people in Iraq who will die.

please learn how to spell PERSIAN, and while we are at it, why dont you open up a book sometime, Iraq is not some desert wasteland like Afghanistan, we are planning a full scale invasion of a relatively developed urban nation, meaning lots of death, and i dont care what BUSH says, hes just another one of history's leaders with "high aspirations", that doesnt make his word gold, History books are useful sometimes, here are a few examples: Ghengis Khan, Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Franco, Mao - these are just a few that come to mind.

War with Iraq

by Worried in Wisconsin Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002 at 3:42 AM

It is with a heavy heart that I watch my government pushing this war mentality.I want to pass along this quote and hope citizens will use reason and not emotion. They should remember what happened to Rome.
A little wisdom:
"Beware of the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind...
And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader, and gladly so.
How do I know? For this is what I have done.
And I am Caesar.

U.S.M.C. veteran

loribillgaffney@mindspring.com 770-643-1780 1500 lackey road roswell ga. 20075

I just wached President Bush's speech and the signing of the bill ,to give him the power to go to war.
He appeared as happy as a kid at Christmas who just
unwrapped his "red ryder b.b. gun".
I attended Vanderbilt Univ. on a football scholarship in
the early sixities. My father was a Marine Corps fighter
pilot in WW11 and Korea. I took NROTC at VANDY because it was an easy "A" and I needed all the help I could get. Between my Junior and Senior I took the Marine Corps Option which meant from then on we would have Marine instructors. There were only four of
us who took the option that year. I later went to boot
camp between my Jr. and Sr. year and survived, many
dropped out or were allowed to go back to the Navy.
I graduated with a BA in history , when I walked-up to
receive my diploma, I was wearing the starched Marine
whites and second lieutenant,s bars or as know in the
service "butter bars" a term of derision.
I used to cross the campus and daydream that I was
in my combat gear, flak vest etc. and that my men were behind me. I would even count cadence. After I graduated I went to Marine Corp's Basic Officer's school( the Marine Corps will never turn a new Second
Lt. loose on it's Marines until he had proved himself
this required another 6-months.

I often dreamed of being a hero perhaps a Navy Cross
at least a Bronze Star, could it be the Medal of Honor??? We arrived and disembarked from a C-130.
We were to provide perimeter defense for the airfield
at DANAG. Some of the other junior officers and myself
would speculate as to where the best place would be to be wounded, serious enough to evacted to the world
not too minor because you would be patched-up and
sent back to the line. When we arrive on the C-130's we saw what looked like large metal containers being loaded on to the plane!!!! Senior and Junior officers(lifers) must have a war on their resume if they expect to be promoted and it is still this way to day. I hope that this time it will be and "equal Opportunity war."
The only thing I longed for was a shower, hotmeal and
sleep, sleep, sleep, not necessarily in that order. I eventuall put in for transfer to the air wing and was sent
to Pensacola.

MARINE CORPS DISABLED VETERAN

LORIBILLGAFFNEY@MINDSPRING.COM 770-643-1780 1500 LACKEY ROAD

Your are exactly right. President Bush when he signed
the war bill, with great cheering and yelling by his pre
-selected audience appeared to be a little boy at Christmas time who just opened his new "red ryder"
B.B. gun. There is an adage in the service " if you are going to be a career officer and rise in rank, you must have combat action on your resume." The "grunts" who do all the fighting and dying do not think on such a
high plain. They discuss "what would be the best place
to be wounded, not to bad but bad enough to be sent back to the "world" not to slight or you would be fixed up and sent back the line" I must admit that junior officers sometimes had the same conversation. When
as a young Marine Officer I landed at DANAG to protect the perimeter of the airfield, we were all concerned when we saw the plane we had just disembarked from being loaded with alumnium containers. Mr. Bush
injoyed himself in the TEXASS AND ALABAMA NATL GUARD. He did not have the pleasure of heating C-rats. day after day. No showers, etc.. All the pleasures
of the GRUNTS. I decided the AIR WING was the place for me, passed my flight physical and was on my way to Pensacola. I wonder the 66% of americans who back this war, how would they replay if the question had been "we are going to draft and this time there will
be no deferments for college, natl. guard. service(Pres.
Bush). Money will not keep you out of the war, nor will
political connections. Defer men with families only, unless they want to go.
I wonder what percentage would vote for war. It is allright when it is someone else's child or father who is going to war but not mine!!!!!

loribillgaffney@mindspring.com 770-643-1780 1500 lackey road roswell ga.

Colonel you "hit the nail on the head" The U.S. people
the 66% who when polled "believe that it is alright
for us to be the aggressor and also to go it alone against IRAQ. What if the question had been "HOW WOULD YOU VOTE IF THE DRAFT DID NOT HAVE ANY DEFERMENTS!!!! NO COLLEGE LAW SCHOOL
MED. SCHOOL NO NATIONAL GUARD(PRESIDENT BUSH). I wonder what the poll results would be in that situation. American's are always glad to go to war until it hits close to home. I will not discuss Vietnam "the
poor man's war" let's make this an "equal opportunity
affair." When I disembarked from a C-130 in DANAG and noticed all the "aluminum boxes" being loaded on the same plane I lost most of my illusions of God and
Country. War is just to survive. Junior officers used to discuss were was the best place to be wounded , it would have to be bad enough to be E-vacted to the "world" but not bad enough so that you would not be treated an sent back to the "line"
I noticed the "old"men at today's signing. They clapped
and cheered!!!!! They are happy because they will not have to go. Why is it that the old men always enjoy sending young men off to die!!!!!!!
The V.A. Hospital's have been gutted since Pres. Bush
came into office. The Texas and Alabama guard "hero"
has decided that the Veterans of other "efforts to get
other Saddams, Ho's, stop the "dominio effect" are not
able to receive the medical treatment they need. I hope our new veterans will have a better fate!!!!!!

I agree with you completely. College education is what is definitely needed to allow people to be able to obtain jobs that pay enough to actually be able to live--i.e., pay for housing, food, clothing, etc. The MSNBC question was terribly slanted toward getting the answer that they wanted for Bush, as are many of MSNBC's questions. Today's question, for example, is extremely slanted--"Do you think the GOP will regain the Senate?" I also hate to vote on MSNBC's slanted poll questions, but did and sent a note that the question is very slanted. I certainly believe that the GOP will not retake the Senate and in fact, the Democrats will gain additional seats to add to their majority in the Senate.

Media and corporate censorship

by Randy Grant Monday, Nov. 04, 2002 at 1:05 AM

Lets face it the american media is not free. Our mainstream media is now owned by 6 corporations. The FCC under the Cinton administration oversaw the largest consolidation of the media in US history. The new rules enacted by the FCC this last decade have allowed clear channel to dominate all local radio markets, and reduced control of the airwaves to Disney, AOL Time Warner, Newscorp, Viacom, Bertlesmann and Vivendi Universal. While people such as Bush Admirer might say such news outlets as CNN and MSNBC are left leaning the truth of the matter is that these channels have a direct monetary intrest in surpressing all news that makes their corporate sponsors look bad. And who are the sponsors of the oligarcy that makes up contemporary US news media. Are these sponsors in anyway connected to the Military Industrial Complex that has a undying need to secure resources such as oil all around the world to keep the US Petrol Dollar afloat? You bet they do. What are the odds these corporate controlled news organizations would tell the truth about the growing anti war movement when they are hell bent on brainwashing the masses into buying the adminstrations line that Saddam must be stopped because he has weapons of mass destruction? Which of these news outlest will tell the american people the proven fact that the US supplied Saddam with the vast majority of the weapons of mass destruction he once possesed, I say once possesed because the weapon inspection imposed upon Iraq by the UN has accounted for and destroyed well over 90% of Saddams arsenal of such weapons. This means that Saddam is far less of a threat today then he was in 1991. The only place you will find this kind of critical news is Pacifica and Indymedia. Sadly NPR can no longer give the people such hard hitting news. The reason is NPR now takes corporate underwriting. The change that has come over NPR is indicative of the insidious effect corporate control has over our media.

If you are retired you started into the work force when one could earn a living wage. I am a 58 year old Tool and Maker from Ohio, and felt that there would always be jobs in my trade available. Through the passage of trade agreements such as MAFTA and GATT, and the formation of the WTO, the manufacturing jobs have left the country at such a rapid rate there just isn't any jobs available that pays a living wage. The Multi National Corperations own Washington DC, and are bringing about global government through trade. A 200 billion trade decifit with China is a good example of what I mean, how many American jobs does that represent? I thought much like you at one time, but have since changed my mind.
