Doctor Killed in Work Shooting
By PAUL CHAVEZ Associated Press Writer
April 16, 2002, 3:11 AM EDT
COMMERCE, Calif. -- An X-ray technician at a clinic opened fire during a workplace meeting Monday, killing the clinic's doctor-owner and two co-workers before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.
The shooting erupted during a meeting between the technician, whose name was not released, and one of the victims, authorities said late Monday night.
"Some sort of meeting was occurring in one of the offices with the suspect when the shooting began," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Varela. "The suspect exited that office and shot two more of the victims, after which he took his own life."
Two of the victims were Patricia Oglesby, 49, of Pico Rivera, and Roxanne Ruiz, 25, of East Los Angeles, who were both shot in the head. They died at the scene.
The third victim was identified as Dr. Lucia Caridad Lorenzo, 43, who died Monday after being rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Lorenzo, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, died about two hours after the shooting, said hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda.
The shooter was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 9-mm handgun was recovered, said Deputy Richard Pena. Authorities withheld his identity, but said he was a 51-year-old clinic technician.
It wasn't immediately clear what prompted the shooting at the Superior Medical Clinic in this working class city 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The shooting occurred about 1:20 p.m. in a strip mall that also includes a Chinese restaurant and a Domino's Pizza.
Patients and associates of Lorenzo said she owned the clinic, which served predominantly Hispanic patients and specialized in medical care for pregnant women. She herself was the mother of two children, they said.
Witnesses said the clinic was crowded with people, including children.
Records from the American Medical Association show that Lorenzo graduated in 1987 from a medical school in the Dominican Republic and focused on internal medicine and pediatrics during her residency.
"Her being a mom, she was a very good mother, she was a very good physician," said Irene Villapania, a friend of Lorenzo. "And because she had a lot of respect for her patients, she treated them very well and they were very happy with her ... This is terrible. It's such a tragedy. I can't believe it."

It's interesting that three women were killed by one man. It makes me think of the Montreal Massacre about a decade ago when the misogynist murdered all those women. We'll probably never know the answer why this man killed these women, but the possibility that it could be misogyny will always be there.
