from a quick google search ("impeach bush"), there seem to be lots of people working on this already, though not necessarily in tandem. maybe some lawyers' groups could start something serious with this, tie efforts together, make it formal, etc. I doubt it would actually result in anything close to an impeachment, given his apparent solid pact with/protection from satan himself, but it is definitely something that should be happening. we've had a year now to start building a case with against the bastard, and what a year it's been--he hasn't wasted any time, we shouldn't be wasting time either. maybe IMC could help be an organizing force behind something like this--build up an online case against him housed at IMC. What a beautiful use of independent media that would be, eh? (btw, "impeach bush" search on global indymedia brought up zero matches)
anyway here's some background info i dug up online about impeachment:
Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution says, "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors."
In the past, Congress has issued Articles of Impeachment for acts in three general categories:
1. Exceeding the constitutional bounds of the powers of the office
2. Behavior grossly incompatible with the proper function and purpose of the office
3. Employing the power of the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain
The President of the United States is granted these powers under Article II of the Constitution:
Powers of the President
+ Serve as commander in chief of all U.S. armed forces
+ Commission officers of the armed forces
+ Grant pardons and reprieves from Federal offenses (except impeachments)
+ Convene special sessions of Congress
+ Receive foreign ambassadors
+ Take care that Federal laws are faithfully executed
+ Wield the "executive power"
+ Appoint officials to lesser offices
Powers of the President Shared With the Senate
+ Make treaties
+ Appoint ambassadors, judges, and higher officials
Powers of the President Shared With Congress as a Whole
+ Approve legislation
more from Article II of the US Constitution:
Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:--"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
The Impeachment Process in a Nutshell
1.
The House Judiciary Committee deliberates over whether to initiate an impeachment inquiry.
2.
The Judiciary Committee adopts a resolution seeking authority from the entire House of Representatives to conduct an inquiry. Before voting, the House debates and considers the resolution. Approval requires a majority vote.
3.
The Judiciary Committee conducts an impeachment inquiry, possibly through public hearings. At the conclusion of the inquiry, articles of impeachment are prepared. They must be approved by a majority of the Committee.
4.
The House of Representatives considers and debates the articles of impeachment. A majority vote of the entire House is required to pass each article. Once an article is approved, the President is, technically speaking, "impeached" -- that is subject to trial in the Senate.
5.
The Senate holds trial on the articles of impeachment approved by the House. The Senate sits as a jury while the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides over the trial.
6.
At the conclusion of the trial, the Senate votes on whether to remove the President from office. A two-thirds vote by the Members present in the Senate is required for removal.
7.
If the President is removed, the Vice-President assumes the Presidency under the chain of succession established by Amendment XXV.
I've compiled over 35 catagories (articles) of impeachment to indict the oil coup since this posting:
