The Utah state legislature just passed Utah House

Bill 100 (an amendment to Utah's criminal code)

which defines protestors as terrorists. The bill

states that "A person is guilty of commercial terrorism if he enters or remains unlawfully on the

premises or in a building of any business with the

intent to interfere with the employees, customers,

personnel, or operations of a business."

This bill was amended and passed by the Utah House

of Representatives and referred to the Utah Senate

on Feb. 4 in order to limit protests at the Olympics.

The Senate will vote on the bill soon.

is this for real?

by johnk Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002 at 8:53 AM

It almost sounds like a joke.

Why does a "business" get special protection with a class of crime called "commercial terrorism"?

This "terrorism" of protest sounds like it could be covered under "failure to disperse". This is demonization, plain and simple.

This "war on terrorism" is just like the "war on drugs". It's a legislative farce used to pass repressive laws in flagrant violation of the constitution and human rights. It's so crass, I don't believe people are falling for it.

In fact, I'm surprised the Republican administration doesn't declare a "war on politicians" and use it to imprison Democrats.

sit ins

This law would classify the lunch counter sit-ins as terrorist acts.

Just something to think about for Black History Month.
