March Against Police Brutality in Long Beach

by Stop police brutality! Saturday, Feb. 09, 2002 at 7:41 AM

Feb 9th. 3pm. Lincoln park (Broadway and Pacfic) in Long Beach.

The March starts at 3pm on Feb 9th from Lincoln Park [Broadway+Pacific] next to the main Long Beach Library.

This is in response to the murder of Marcella Byrd, a 57 year old black woman, who was shot on January 19th, 2001 at Top Value Market on pacific Ave. Ten police officers surrounded her and instead of restraining her they shot her 17 times!! They suspected her of shop lifting although there was no proof. She had a carving knife but police should know that if you throw a carving knife the handle not the blade would strike and fall to the ground. No one deserves to be murdered and the Long Beach Police have been doing it for years and getting away with it. This time against a mentally impaired elderly women.

The community is coming together to stand up against these thugs and let them know we won't allow there reign of terror to continue. We want community policing, we want an immediate 50% reduction in the over inflated police budget to go to community programs, an end to under cover intimidation, follow homes, unlawful arrests, and physical assualts by the Long Beach police on the poor and working class communitites. The Long Beach Police have intesfied there harrasment of the young, old, poor, homeless, gay, black, mexican, cambodian, worker rights groups, environmentalists, and activist groups in Long Beach.

EVERYONE must come and give support! This is a community event that will self empower and build mutual aid in Long Beach. On Feb 5, 2001 It was announced to the Long Beach city council that this march would take place and that if there is any violence it will be from the Long Beach Police Department. This is a non violent march in response to the decades of violence and oppresion we have had to deal with!

The men in blue are the real terrorists. They shoot us, beat us, and harras us everyday on the streets. Don't let the expanding police state label people who speak up against them as terrorists. They will say anything to justify there reign of terror and protect the interests of their wealthy, big buisness, anti-union, anti-environemnt, racist, sweatshop buddies.

Take back your community on Feb 9th!!! 3pm.. Broadway and Pacific. Lincoln Park. Bring signs, leaflets, and good shoes to march in!!!
