Global Justice Movement: Which Way from 9-11?

by IMC Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2001 at 4:57 AM

Where should the global justice movement go from here?

While the mainstream media has pronounced the anti-corporate globalization/global justice movement dead since 9-11, many people, especially activists within the movement disagree. What do you think? Where should the global justice movement go from here? Should its priorities change? Add your comments here!

tactics

by sw Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2001 at 8:18 AM

Direct action and non-violent civil disobedience should remain a stradegy among anti-capitalists, however certain tactics should QUICKLY be abandoned permanently such as window breaking and all forms of vandalism...especially at mass demonstrations.

The corporate media is too quick to pick up on these mostly isolated incidents and paint a very broad brush against the entire movement as violent thugs. We can no longer afford that. Window breaking, now more than ever, HAS TO STOP.

Human chains and barriers are fine and good, shutting down capitalism in any non-violent way is instrumental, but vandalism...it just cannot be done any longer.

Corporate Boycotts, etc.

by Anti-Fascist Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2001 at 4:11 PM

Also boycotts against corporate america, protests at their headquarters, education of the public with leaflets, alternative publications to do an "end run" around the propaganda of the corporate media. Non-violent and affective warfare against global, corporate capitalism!

New Front?

by Paul H. Rosenberg Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2001 at 5:46 PM
rad@gte.net

Actually, the recent Republican acitons on behalf of corporate America and against workers have opened up a new front for global justice activists to rally against. I agree wholeheartedly with both the above, and would just like to add that we should look harder and harder and the simplest ways of making the connections between the various different ways in which "Operation Infinite Greed" continues to unfold.

what are you FOR ???needs answers

by a3m Wednesday, Nov. 07, 2001 at 7:10 PM

when we engage the unconverted, the clueless, the timid, hell, when we gather ourselves, the focus should start with What is the goal? What does it look like in a world where we are no longer drawn to the streets in protest. What does a goodlife for the planet and all humanity look like? how can the problems get fixed? we all, every one alive can see the problems. quit assigning blame by externalizing the greedy shadow onto capitalist institutions. talk about the heart, the intentions, talk about returning intention and ethics to all transactions, talk about being aware of consequences, about wanting to trade with the knowledge that our money is not tainted with blood, slavery ,child labor...

Talk to the christian in their language. learn it if you don't know it. Most 'capitalists' are christians so this should go a long way. Don't worry about winning arguments, worry about touching hearts . Don't haggle the details , go to the fundamentals.

And LISTEN to the other person. BE WITH THEM 100% don't just wait impatiently for your turn, a chance to tell them how greedy and stupid......LISTEN COMPASSIONATELY listen and see the fears and trepidations that are there. FIND the commonality.

Otherwise your just propogating the problem. NOBODY likes conversion by the sword.

What We Are FOR...

by Anti-Fascist Thursday, Nov. 08, 2001 at 12:36 AM

We are FOR-

1. Economic Democracy- Ownership, control and determination of the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services by everyone involved as a 100% equal partnership for use and not for profit.

2.

A. A true Democratic Government with proportional representation and accountability to the people through a Constitution based upon ALL of the provisions of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, OR

B. A non-hierarchical society with direct participation of all in the decision making process in both economic and political arenas (ex: Anarchy).

3. Responsible use of resources so that they are available for all and the production process does not destroy or endanger our planet for ourselves, those who come after us and other living species.

The San Diego State University Students Against Sweatshops meets every Wednesday at the Calmecac room at Aztec Center, SDSU, at 4:00pm. We offer an opportunity to studentsand SDSU community members to do some real good in the world, with the tools at our command: our student dollars, our citizen action, and our hearts, which reach out to workers throughout the world who make the clothes we wear. We are out to save the Earth, one campus bookstore at a time. All are welcome- join us!

Jim
