This is a worldwide petition calling on the Philippine government to close the prostitution slave camps of Angeles, Philippines.
A woman or child is raped or killed on average every six seconds in Angeles City, Philippines.
An estimated 150,000 girls work in Angeles City, Philippines as prostitutes, of that about 30,000 are girls as young as six years of age. Despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in Angeles not one person has been convicted of this crime.
The prostitution trade is controlled by foreign gangs who rake in millions while the girls suffer on a bowl of rice a day. Young girls are forced to work up to twenty hours a day and are expected to sevice up to 100 customers a week. Most of the gangs that run the prostitution trade are foreigners. They pay off corrupt police, military and city hall officials. The girls are locked away to sleep watched over by armed security gaurds who carry batons, electric prods and shotguns.

What is Norma Jean Almodovar's (ex-l.a.p.d. cop turned call-girl) view on this? She helps run California's foremost prostititutes' liberation group *Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics" (COYOTE). Does COYOTE agree with you all? How about other groups, like those in Nevada?
I and others would be more moved if they took on a position agreeing with you.
I first visited Angeles in 1985, have been there dozens of times since, having just returned.
The 150,000 Angeles prostitute number quoted is rediculous.
With poor infrastructure and political instability (as compared with bangkok or pattaya, etc), the already skiddish "Sex tourist" in Angeles City (post U.S. base closures)has largely been scared off in recent times by news of the Abu Sayaf, Edsa II,etc.
The true profits associated with the GoGo Bar/Club Industry is in the buying and selling of the clubs (as well as possible money laundering).
As a Club owners business declines, he has difficulty recruiting and retaining "working girls".The girls change clubs, leave town for manila, marry foreigners ,or give up and return home to the province. Yes, many, hang on making a living the only way they can.
In 15 years walking, driving and biking the streets of Angeles, I've never seen nor heard , of one of these "Sex Slave Camps" described, nor has anyone else I've talked to including expats I know who've lived there for 10 and 20 years. (I challenge the author to give me the address or tell me where I can find one of these Camps, etc.)
Anyone who's been to the Philippines, knows that the filipino's are extremly proud and freedom loving people as demonstrated by not one but two "people power" led revolutions in 15 years. Unfortunately, being born in one of the worlds poorest economies, with a population of 80 million and no jobs, the women become economic slaves;
"Guns and Fences..." (what a joke), they are not required
and don't exist.
I happened to be in a bar last month when the owner called a meeting to inform the girls that business was bad and he would half to let half of them go (i.e layoff). Some of the girls were visibly devistated. Most of the girls have a child or two and perhaps a mother to support.
Regarding the six year olds, I've seen plenty of 15 and 16 year olds passing for 18 with fake ID's, perhaps some as young as 13 or 14 (?) In 15 years having been in nearly every club up and down fields ave, I've yet to see a six to 11 year old, 12 possibly, but 6 is rediculous. Lots of 6 year olds roaming the streets, all hours of the night, orphans, mothers with children, kids begging for pesos, etc., etc.
Rape every 6 seconds...?, Rape seems to be a big problem in the philippines as it is elswhere in the world (maybe more endemic in some traditional developing cultures where men think it's their right, etc. I've heard many accounts of filipinas raped by a family member, a drunken/aggresive filipino, etc, etc, but I've only heard of one or two foreigners perpertrating rape and I't made you wonder why when guys go there because sex is so readibly available and cheap.
Yes, It's very very sad that young teenage women have to turn to prostitution, and yes, the government turns a blind eye to it, but It's not apparent to me that the author has spent time in Angeles, he or she completely misrepresents the facts and in doing so invalidates his or her "moral case" and their right to make it.
"Outrageously irresponsible journalism" but no it's not a pretty picture in Angeles City...
