March in Solidarity With Immigrant Students Seeking Higher Education

by CHIRLA Tuesday, Sep. 11, 2001 at 5:15 AM

(This is a flyer distributed by CHIRLA calling for new state education laws that will allow long term undocumented immigrants to pay in-state fees.)

MARCH IN SOLIDARITY WITH IMMIGRANT STUDENTS SEEKING HIGHER EDUCATION

Tuesday September 11th, 2001 @ 4:00 PM

March will begin on corner of 1st and Beaudry (Belmont Project) and will end at 300 S. Spring St. (Governor's District Office) with a rally! Vigil to immediately follow rally.

Thousands of students will be prevented from attending college because they cannot afford out-of-state tuition and do not qualify for Pell grants or student loans. Under current law, there are very few mechanisms, if any, for students who were brought here as children to legalize their immigration status and go to college. This even applies to those who have lived most of their lives here, speak English fluently, and have excelled in school. Among those prevented from completing their education are class valedictorians, straight-A students, creative talents, and idealistic youngsters committed to bettering their communities. Harsh rules apply to all of the students, regardless of individual ability, circumstances, or length of residence. The results are tragic, both for the children and for the rest of us, as we will be deprived of the future these students could have led.

Let's send out a strong message to our elected officials and Governor Davis that we will not accept another year with our brightest students not being able to access higher education.

Wear your graduation caps and gowns to show solidarity!

We must not fold!

I wanted to go to this demonstration with a sign that said:

How about --

BILLION FOR EDUCATION!

The time is fast appoaching when we have to stop bowing to patriotism, and start defending everything we've fought for for the last 60 years. Everything working people need is on the chopping block, ready to be sacrificed for the military and the rich. We also need to demand an end to War talk and a turn in the direction of the US respecting international law.
