Nazis Invade Anaheim Tonight--But WE FOUGHT BACK!

by From a friendly anarchist Tuesday, Sep. 04, 2001 at 2:48 AM

The Shack, who earlier claimed that they wouldn't host Nazis and the KKK, show themselves to be liars

Take notice all comrades in Southern California... Neo-nazis, racist skinheads, and Klan members are meeting at their place of worship--The Shack in Anaheim (Orange County). The Shack's address is: 1160 N. Kraemer Blvd., Anaheim. Phone: (714) 630-0121 or (714) 522-8256;

and web address: www.theshackrestaurant.com.

You can check out a racist web site that has pictures from their concert at the Shack in June at: http://www.resistance.com/shows/socalshow.htm

Anyway, the fascists are using the Shack bar and grill to recruit new members and to solidify their base. This is very dangerous for the many diverse groups of people threatened by the Nazis in the Anaheim area (people of color, homosexuals, radicals, etc.). So, it was necessary for people of conscience to show up tonight at 5 to express our disgusts for the fascist pigs.

From the comments made by the owner of the Shack and his employees, the Shack has sympathy for these hate-mongerers. One employee said, "Of course, I'm proud of my white skin". They also were buddy-buddy with all the fellow Nazis that came in.

Three different cars full of nazi pigs tried to kill us. One accelerated into the parking space where I was standing, nearly hitting my knees. Another swerved toward the sidewalk from Kraemer Blvd. nearly hitting a few activists. Another almost hit me as I tried to cross the driveway. The Anaheim PD did nothing, of course, as they looked on. All they could do was film us.

There were mainly shouting matches between the two sides and no physical confontations occurred (except for the cars!). We did let the homophobic skin head men that we wanted to see their big penis, but they wouldn't show us. They just seemed to get really pissed off.

We did not stop this show from going on but it was positive to at least bring bad press on this nazi establishment. The OC weekly will be doing a story on it as well as a few mainstream media. At the next city council meeting we will be attempting to get the liqour license from the Shack revoked as well as beginning to protest outside of the home of the owner. We need his neighbors to understand he sympathizes with genocide.

Let's keep diligent as this latest right wing reaction takes place. Until victory--solidarity and anarchy! Smash fascism--smash NAZI scum!

I thought the demo was spirited and very good, but an effort to revoke the liquor license is going to require that future demos be somewhat less hostile.

Like it or not, the best organized allies will be the local churches and ethnic organizations, which may be pretty conservative.

Still, if this small movement becomes engaged in an effort to make OC unfriendly to Nazis, it's a great opportunity for Anarchism to make a good impression on people who would otherwise be enemies to radical politics.

keep the nazis out of anaheim

by leftistlatino Tuesday, Sep. 04, 2001 at 5:33 AM

Nazism and the KKK have always had a place in Anaheim. During the 1920's a majority of the City Council members were members of the KKK, which at the time had a huge presence in Anaheim. In fact, my high school history textbook had a large picture of the KKK rallying in the downtown of a city. Only until I entered college did I discover that that city was Anaheim.

A movement against the Shack is a great idea. I'm not so sure about revoking their liquor license since it would be tantamount to trying to shut them down (which I'm completely against) but we must alert the community at large as to how this venue is promoting racism. I will be at the City Council meeting Tuesday and urge anyone who can go to go. Afterwards, we should discuss strategies as to how we can go about our campaign against the Shack's racism.

this is just disgusting

my country (France) had to fight against the neo nazi and other white supremacists disguised under the mask of political respectability - for those who do not know, we have something called the National Front in France, it is currently going through a crisis but for a long time it was threatening to enter the political arena, they won a few seats at the parliament, a couple local elections, etc...

i moved to america two years ago, and i am appalled every day with everything i discover about this country. i knew there were still white supremacists here but it goes beyond that, it is insidious and creeping everywhere, people don't even realize it . sometimes i hear even intelligent and educated people make comments that make me want to scream : are you people out of your fucking mind ?

anyway the question that I have never been able to answer though is what do you do when you are faced with such ignorance ? i have found myself in arguements with people like that before and it seems hopeless.

direct action and boycott is of course always effective but it just displaces the problem somewhere else.

so how do you erradicate this plague ??

Guylaine.

I was at the demo and it was sick to see all those nazi hatemongers gathering there. I'm not surprised about the police lack of support for protesters, given Anaheim's long history of racism. Right now, Anaheim has police officers like Harald Martin, who openly works with racist groups that had proposition 187 and the english-only proposition put on the California ballot, and who advocated Anaheim police becoming INS agents, and who also is on the Anaheim school board and was behind the banning of books about people of color, women and gays.

I think the idea of protesting at the house of the owner of the Shack is great! Count me in for that!

How we erradicate the plague of racism

by Mike Tuesday, Sep. 04, 2001 at 9:25 PM
EZLNjan94@aol.com

It is true, the US is probably the most racist country in the world. And, the most distressing thing about it is that most "white" people don't even notice it. Although, nazis, the KKK, and other extreme hate groups pose a threat to our safety, the real threat is really the racism that is institutional and inherent in our economic and political system.

There is no doubt that capitalism and the state provokes anger in its citizens. But, it diverts that anger from itself to people of minority ethnic groups, the poor, and other oppressed groups (as I'm sure most people understand here). The only sure way--the only long term way to erradicate racism is to channel that anger people have toward the correct source of that anger.

It's difficult when you try to talk some sense into senseless people. Indoctrination is so deep in the US as to make it almost impossible to get rid of with a single argument. At least in the case of children, the best way is to instill empathy and critical thinking skills in them. If they can put themselves in another person's shoes, then maybe it can be eroded.

The Nazis are an extreme case. They have a right to be angry but they have channeled it the wrong way. No easy answers...

Fuck shit up!

by Rampage Wednesday, Sep. 05, 2001 at 1:06 AM

You want to get rid of racists in Anaheim? Fuck shit up. It has been a sure and effective way of stopping racists groups (Like when National Front tried to have a rally in Britian and radical demonstrators showed up with crossbows and bats not to long ago NF decided not to rally after all). Closing down the shop is a good idea, I have no idea why people are opposed to this. You want to stop them, then you have to pull the rug out from under them. When there is no place for them to play shows because venues don't want street fights, protests, vandalism, and their venues being shut down they lose a lot of morale and recruiting is shut down. When they are afraid to walk the streets at night we have less hate crimes. Protect your community by any means neccessary. Don't feel bad for the owner, he needs to learn a lesson. I've been jumped by nazis twice in anaheim (And I'm white, think of how many people of color are being attacked), I don't give two shits about any ofem. This is people power in action. So let's get the party started right. To all my comrades out there fighting the good fight I give you my fist in solidarity, I feel like coming back to help...........

Fight the good fight!

okay i agree with rampage.we fought a decent fight..but if we all came togther and decied to actually STOP the show...by any means.we could have done that.we got there at 5..and had alot of time to tear that place down days before the show.

i think the next thing to do..is to hit the shack..hard.and show everyone in this community that nazis aren't welcome.

we can do it, tear them down.

by movement Wednesday, Sep. 05, 2001 at 6:51 AM

We have more than enough people and community support to tear this fucking place down by all means necessary. The police arn't going to do anything but try and stop us, they didn't do shit when these neo-nazi's tried to run over several demonstrators, they were just focused on trying to profile everyone at the demonstration. So fuck 'em, police forces act just like the nazi's. Justice and action is gunna have to come from the people, not the police, not judges, or the feds, because they too are racist bigots running this fascist country. These are OUR communities. If we expect to carry out revolution, we can't let these neo-nazi's run around jumping people, organizing and murdering people, and building breeding grounds for recruiting. These neo-nazi's also try to infiltrate our movement all the time. 600 neo-nazi's infiltrated the demonstrations in Genoa. I look at these neo-nazi organizations and it looks like they have alot of money. I wonder who's funding them... So what the fuck are we waiting for. Let's tear them down by all means necessary.

Organizing

by Queeradellic Wednesday, Sep. 05, 2001 at 3:26 PM

I worked at a punk club in Anaheim in the 1980s. At the time, there were many skinhead groups who were moving from places in Northern California to Orange County because they felt more welcome in historically racist OC. The skinheads often attacked people of color in the parking lot, and even killed one guy whom they stabbed to death.

The reason the skinheads left Northern California is because people there organized against them, demonstrated their events, and stopped their shows. People also formed groups like Rock Against Racism, and held shows at the same venues that they did, educating people who may have become indoctrinated with their racist beliefs about why racism is wrong. There were also parks that skinheads would hang out at at night to gay bash, and anti-racist activists set up their own groups to patrol for skinheads. These are things I heard from friends of mine up there. Maybe we can take some of these ideas, and become more proactive rather than reactive, and not only stop their shows before they happen, but change their potential recruits beliefs, and prevent other shows from being planned in the first place.

Although nazi groups have been active in OC since the beginning of the county, they have been solidifying their base since many skinhead groups moved their operations here in the 1980s. It's about time we get together and destroy their base, and topple their pillar of hatred!

If we shut down their shows at the Shack, is there another place they will be able to go? And if their shows at the Shack are stopped in a visible and forceful way, what other potential venues might be more reluctant to let them organize there after that? And if their shows are stopped, how can we work to change their attitudes and beliefs, and prevent them from brainwashing others?

that's precisely the problem

by ---- Wednesday, Sep. 05, 2001 at 3:28 PM
----

That's precisely the problem, neo nazis are only the tip of the iceberg and the easy target to fight, but of course they have the institutions and the money on their side and of course it was predictable that the cops couln't care less about the neo nazis but instead were taking notes on the protesters.

that's why it sometimes seems hopeless but i guess you all are right, if everybody's jaded and keeps saying that there is no point, then there really is no point.

I think a combination of action and ideas can may be win - boycot and tearing the place down has to go together with explaining why it is good for our communities to take action.

but in any case let's face it, not only do we have to fight the ignorance of those neo nazi groups but also all those who probably agree but would never admit it and the system that supports this whole process.

I agree with Mike, i know it's cliche to say that the system is guilty for all this but really it's what it comes down to and the institutions of this country breed racism and live of racism just like french institutions live of political conflict and hypocrisy.

Here's the underscore to Guylaine's point: In today's papers it was announced that BOTH the U.S. and Israel had pulled out of the U.N. Conference on Racism in Durban, South Sfrica. So there it is, the racist USA and its Zionist colonial puppet, Israel showing their true color-WHITE SUPREMACIST! As it is in Anaheim, so it was in Durban.

Anti-nazi campaign

by PART-ARA Thursday, Sep. 06, 2001 at 4:25 AM
part2001@usa.net 310-495-0299 POB 1055 Culver City 90232

We need to get organized to deal with the nazis. The reason the problem has grown is that organized opposition has really slacked off allowing them to rebuild their base. We are reviving Anti-Racist Action; if you want to get involved, get in touch (part2001@usa.net). Thursday night is Hip Hop night at the Shack and I am putting together a flyer to distribute to people there. Churches and community are fine allies, but we need people who are ready to struggle militantly and creatively. The OC Weekly will be running a cover story on the Shack and the nazis Thursday, so we should get that around to people too. We need to be tabling shows as well as creating a more vigorous anti-racist cultural scene among young people. There is plenty to be done, and plenty that can be effective in organizing people who are repelled by nazis to oppose other forms of racism as well. For example it was just exposed that the Anaheim PD has been doing intelligence gathering on local latino critics of police abuse. Picketing the Anaheim PD about their racism, or leafleting people going to Disneyland about racism in Anaheim, nazis at the Shack and police racism will probably get a big rise out of the powers that be in Anaheim.

more thoughts on all that

by ---- Friday, Sep. 07, 2001 at 6:50 PM
----

I'll be honest: these guys scare the shit out of me. I know most of them will not do anything when they're by themselves because they don't have their buddies to protect them but they still scare me. And I think most people don't come out to protest for the same reason, men or women. if i was a guy and i was big and strong, would i be less scared ? i don't even know, it seems that most of us - regardless of how passionate we are about being active and doing something to stop racism - value individual comfort and a life without too much hassle over potentially being hurt for something we believe in.

when i watch documentaries about the civil rights movement i am so amazed at the amount of courage those people had ...

when i talk to friends of mine from indonesia who risked their life to protest in djakarta, friends from africa who saw their relatives being killed, i almost feel like apologizing for even pretending to be politically active in any way.

My ancestors fucked up the world with their colonial and racist ideology and no matter how much i fundamentally hate being french for that and other reasons - like my country collaborating with the nazis during the war - i am also a product of that context and it's depressing but i have to be conscious of it if i want to even start thinking about the world and my own place in the world.

i mean let's be honest, it's easy for me to say "we have to fight against racism", when i don't know what it feels like to be treated differently because of the color of my skin.

What i know of the pain of suffering from racism is what i experienced walking hand in hand with my ex boyfriend in conservative neighborhoods in paris, and it's not even racism it's more about the fear of a multicultural society because he is black and i am white.

no matter how much i care, i live in the richest part of the world, my skin is white and i speak the language of the oppressors: french, english and spanish. no matter how poor i am in europe or america, i am still richer than 3/4 of the world.

it's easy to be a condescendent european asshole even with the best intentions, without even realizing it.

it always amazes me that white people don't even question the fact that it doesn't make sense to consider that other people are of a different color but not them. for all i know, white is a color right ?

there is no such thing as a color or a race or even a culture. these are all ideologial concepts that we use when we should really ask ourselves if they have ever meant anything at all.

that's why i don't like the term multiracial society, or even multi cultural society. there is one race and it's the human race.

as for the term "culture", it just refers to a certain group of people within that human race who tend to adopt similar beliefs and behaviours. Until recently, the word wasn't even used that much,so when i hear people lament the lack of culture they observe in the world these days and how Europe has so much more culture than the US, i feel like laughing.

You guys and girls in California seem to have a serious fascist infestation. We've got some of em' here in Canada, but there aren't as many as there seems to be down there. I read about the action a few days before it happened and I'm glad to hear that it had a pretty good turn out. Unfortunately, there isn'T any ARA where I live, but I guess that's up to me to do something about it. It would be nice to see a fascist hanging from every lamp post here in Canada.

Anyways, good luck in getting rid of them. I heard trying to get them to think works pretty well since they're not very good at it.
