FRAUDULENT STORY MISREPRESENTS SEPT 29 DEMONSTRATION

by Latin America Solidarity Conference Thursday, Sep. 27, 2001 at 9:13 PM
323-660-4587 Box 57337 Los Angeles, California 90057

The Sep29 Convening Organizations wish to clarify a fraudulent story appearing on Indymedia; S29 Justice Mobilization postponed their march and rally for September 29 and the overwhelming majority of the original 100 endorsers have withdrawn their support for the newly planned event. for downtown L.A. on that date.

The Convening Organizations of the original Los Angeles S29 mass mobilization planned for next Saturday have issued a statement expressing "disappointment and frustration" that an Indymedia story has been posted suggesting the event is going ahead in its original form.

"The S29 event, called by the 40 organizations of the Latin America Solidarity Conference, which met in Chicago in March, is postponed," an S29 organizer stressed. "The overwhelming majority of the endorsers listed in the fraudulent story have withdrawn their endorsements," the spokesperson emphasized.

"We regret that someone has posted such a misleading story and we hope is not designed to intentionally mislead the movement," she said.

After weeks of planning, the S29 Justice Mobilization suspended planning for the march and rally following the attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

"Another smaller grouping has continued planning for an event downtown on the same day but they are aware that most of the 100 endorsers have pulled out," the statement points out.

Among the groups which have withdrawn their endorsements are the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, CARECEN, El Rescate, PACE, Witness For Peace, CHIRLA, MEChA, CISPES, So. California Fair Trade Network, Office of the Americas and most of the religious community and campus organizations.

The spokesperson went on, "Of course we wish folks well if they are organizing something downtwon on September 29 but we are shocked that they would continue to use endorsements which they know have been pulled."

So what is the name of the group that is still planning the action? How can I get in touch with them? It's not enough for me to hear they are appraised, who are they? Why all the secrecy?

What makes this spokesperson think it was the S29LA organizers who posted the fraudulent article to which you refer? We have publicly stated our respect for those who decided to postpone their involvement in S29 and we have attempted to be accurate in listing which organizations endorse our continuing action. Our desire is to simply see the call through, and for people to join us, because we believe in the issues and they have not disappeared. The vast majority of those attending the LA organizing meetings, those doing the actual work of making the LA event happen, voted to continue to make it happen. This is what democracy looks like. We have volunteered too much hard work to want to confuse people at this point. Good Time To Read "War at Home" by Glick

by tom Friday, Sep. 28, 2001 at 12:43 PM

This seems like a good time to read the book "War at Home"

by Glick. In it he details how the FBI exploits lack of communication by movement leaders. The tactic is to create anger among the coalition leaders by planting attacks that appear to be coming from one member and are directed at another. It would seem that this indy-media site would be a perfect format for such a tactic since any body can post anything. It is essential for people to verify authenticity of statements before jumping to conclusions about who authored them !

exploiting mis-communication among LEADERS

by Strategist Saturday, Sep. 29, 2001 at 1:28 AM

But this time that strategy won't work, will it? I mean we don't have leaders do we? We have some who would pretend to call themselves such but no one pays much attention to them. You can read all the books you want on FBI strategies, what are you doing about creating resistant movement strategies?

big deal?

by Fraudulent? Saturday, Sep. 29, 2001 at 4:01 PM

So whats is the big deal? The original poster probably made an innocent mistake. The mistake was corrected almost immediatly an no harm has been done save for the insulting use of the word fraudulent. For heaven's sake haven't any of you ever sent out a letter where you forgot to cross a 't' or dot an 'i' ? Leave the guy alone and let the non-issue die.
