Pelican Bay Prisoners to Begin Hunger Strike Tomorrow (July 2)

Pelican Bay Prisoners to Begin Hunger Strike Tomorrow (July 2) to Protest Security Housing Unit (SHU) Program

Pelican Bay prisoners are beginning a hunger strike to protest the torturous SHU program in which prisoners are forced to spend 23 hours per day in solitary confinement, with only a small window on the cell door giving them contact with the rest of the world. Inmates are subjected to these barbaric conditions for simply saying hello to their fellow inmates. Prison officials say that the communication between prisoners shows gang activity. Inmates and others, including the Chicano-Mehicano Prison Project, deny this claim with strong evidence. This taxpayer-funded practice is clearly more an instrument of torture than of reform, which is not surprising considering that if prisoners are set free, profits will go down for the private corporations that increasingly own the prisons. Who is free and who is brave in this land?

Yeah, right, give them 1 day, don't bother us

by Walter Monday, Jul. 02, 2001 at 7:42 PM

Pleeeeeseee, as Steve Martin would say, give us a BREAK! These idiots will last 1 fricken day. And why bother us with this drivel??? Let these predators go hungry, like we should care???? If someone wants to be a career criminal and doesn't like the accommodations, then screw them. As Baretta would say, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime!!! See if you can muster any sympathy from these idiot's crime victims!!!!

Sounds like you been there, done that...

Do you speak from experience when you talk of the "torturious" conditions??? Or is one of your family or loved ones bitchin' because they can't watch the TV channel they want??? California penal system is one of the most progressive and humane systems in the WORLD! Try telling your kin to chill and try being a model prisoner and hurry to get back to and give back to the society they raped!

WE?? US??

by Ronni Wednesday, Jul. 04, 2001 at 11:23 AM

Who's the WE? and the US? You must have a twin piece of shit in your pocket!! Obviously this is a subject you, in all you ignorance, know NOTHING about! Far to Fucking STUPID to think of your own lines, explaining why you quote Steve Martin (whobarely knows how to spell please) and Baretta (wife killer/predator & has-been...we'll see if he can do the time).

What do you know about career-anything? You sound like a perfect candidate for getting caught-up in some good ol' corrupt-cop fuck-up... and "WHO CARES" that you "didn't do it" and that you "Don't like the accomodations" - SHIT HAPPENS! I hope it happens to a big mouth like you!
