Text summary of Camp Pendleton Protest 29 May

by SD IMC Wednesday, May. 30, 2001 at 2:52 PM
sdimc@libertad.ucsd.edu

Individuals from numerous activist/political groups turned out to communicate their views to G. W. Bush during his visit to Camp Pendleton on 29 May 2001. Among the issues presented: Demanding that Bush ask the FERC to implement rate caps (see "http://www.powertothepeople.org), opposition to the death penalty, women's reproductive/health rights.

All of these peaceful people were prevented from entering the base ("federal property"), and and conveying their sincere and important messages directly to Bush.

THANKS!! to all those who helped organize and/or participated in the rally. The work continues...act now, do not remain silent, and get your communities to follow suit!

Camp Pendleton Protest Update from SD Greens

by By Magali, reposted by sdimc member Thursday, May. 31, 2001 at 8:19 AM

THANK YOU! To everyone that came to the protest and made it a GREAT SUCCESS!

There were about 100 people outside the main gate to Camp Pendleton.
Speakers were Michael Shames, UCAN; Robert Jellison, Democratic Party, Glen Brown, Green Party; Geoffrey Smith, Sierra Club; Dan Perkins, Sierra Club; June Brashares, Global Exchange and a few other concerned community members. Lots of mainstream media covered the protest and the police presence was strong. We were most proud to see the San Diego Indymedia team recording it all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The RATEBUSTERS WERE ON!
The crows chanted to the tune of the Ghostbusters song with lyrics
appropriate for this occarion. "If they are getting rich, off our power
bills, who are you gonna call? Ratebusters! While George Bush sits, and meditates, who are you gonna call? Ratebusters!"
Toward the end of the protest the Ratebusters led the crowd toward the gate of Camp Pendleton to see if we could get in and talk to Dubya. Afterall, we are the people, and he's supposed to be representing the people. But we didn't have any energy or oil corporationgs backing us up with millions of dollars. Instead, a line up of police officers stood guard as we tried to persuade them that we meant no harm. We just want Bush to stop pushing for
more power plants and pollution and to tell teh FERC to place wholesale energy rate caps NOW! We all know the energy crisis is a fraud.
