Media & LAPD brace for laker "party"

by hates pigs Thursday, May. 24, 2001 at 6:45 AM

media attack on laker fans.

Media & LAPD brace f...
clown.jpg, image/jpeg, 280x186

It seems that the LAPD is all ready to beat more people as the LAKERS seem unbeatable on their way to a repeat. Well If the police are going to gather (4,000 strong) around staples then I say, like last year People should be prepared. Why party @ staples if we know they will be waiting for us? Why not gather at parker center instead? Or maybe, 3rd st in santa monica should be a spot of protest and partyin? Or after Dennis Rodman's (a former laker) clash with newport beach police for LOUD music, we should gather there. Would the police force us into the ocean? Prolly. Last year I was on hollywood blvd when the cops decided to quickly move in to dispurse the crowd. Prolly cause it was so close to the rich people in Beverly hills. I am sure they dont want a revolution in that hood. Speaking of rich people, is'nt the prominade the best choice? I mean you have all the corporations (which are the target) on 3rd st. The police, in santa monica are heavy in numbers so maybe venice beach (since they rebuilt it and took the graffiti away) is a better spot. All I know is that the police are looking forward to bashing skulls and poisoning people with their chemicals again. That is how the LAPD is. I am hoping that the 76ers beat the bucks so that the NBA final will be the spot of the last two political conventions. In phili, they have out done us in LA with the mardi gras Party/riot. We had the lakers and demacratic convention and they had a republican convention and mardi gras. In tuscon, after the duke blue devils won a national championship, The arizona wildcats (the losers) rioted with police. So, that is why I am rooting for philadelphia to beat the bucks. I am sure Philly will light up as well. I wish that sacramento, and portland would riot too since they got beat so badly by the WORLD CHAMPION LAKERS. Only wishfull thinking. My only concern is that we prepare for the worst because the LAPD is foaming at the mouth with hate. They have been waiting for this for a while and since bush is an asshole and the current power crisis we have the numbers they have the guns.

Thank you for listening.

Who knows maybe getting the police all dressed up with nobody to beat would be a better Idea? Since we in LA know our lakers are unbeatable. That would piss the piggies off more than anything. They will find someone to beat tho. And we should stand up and start another round only this time, we should have learned that the police will not fight fair. So bring your favorite defense mechanisms cause they will.

RAGE ON!!!!!

That "kid" was a useless wart on the ass of society and the world is a better place WITHOUT THAT PIECE OF SHIT.

Ever seen that "kids" rap sheet?, he'd sooner gut you like a pig than talk to you. Please if there is a god, send a similar "kid" to the house of the whiner above one day.

Ok you racist scum, I want to point out that in LA, we have had a bunch of cops beat children, beat women, beat young teenagers and kill people who "seem" to have had a gun.

Tim thomas was not armed you coward. You are a pussy and your wife knows it. That is why you beat her too huh? I can see if a guy draws a gun but in your line of work, you are just there to take bullets from criminals anyways.

You cannot build prisons fast enough. We outnumber you. We are getting smarter. We want a revolution. We want our freedom. You want people dead. We will never change it with a ballot pull. So fuck off piggie. Your time on earth is near the end. If you want to beat me just look for a guy with a camera. Or the guy with a helmet & gas mask. Or a guy with a gun.

Bling Bling asshole pig.

You cant hide. We can hide anywhere.

After police shot and killed >>>>>>UNARMED
Enraged, a crowd of 200 took it to City Hall 2 days after the killing where protesters screamed at the Mayor and City Council members when they bumbled on idiotically about the murder. When Angela Leisure, Timothy’s mother took the podium, she said: "You took him from his family and his son and we want to know why. And don’t get me wrong, even when you tell me it’s not going to make it better." And make it better they didn’t. By the end of the night riot cops had encircled another spontaneous protest at police headquarters which had at a point grown up to 800 strong. Police attacked the protesters, firing pepper gas and riot-beanbags into the crowd. But the crowd was tougher than expected. Cops were met with a barrage of bottles and bricks. The battle resulted in a number of injuries and 25 hospitalizations, mainly from beanbag guns used against the demonstrators.

By the next afternoon, popular rage swelled into downtown, Over-the-Rhine and West End neighborhoods with looting and window breaking, dumpster tipping, brick throwing and the setting of fires reported as especially popular activities. By Wednesday, numbers and intensity of the fires had increased. Despite pleas for "peace" from "black leaders," mostly church leaders and worried business owners, a police substation was successfully torched and a cop shot (but remained uninjured thanks to a belt buckle which stopped the bullet). The rebellion was picking up steam. On Thursday, the Mayor announced a state of emergency and signed into effect a curfew between 8pm and 6am, except for people going to and from work. A violation of the curfew was punishable by 6 months jail and a 00 fine. Schools closed, fire fighters refused to enter so called "hot zones" without police escorts. Folks in Cincinnati reported occasional fires or skirmishes, but mostly police attacks on curfew breakers. Throughout the curfew hundreds were arrested, beaten and tortured with pepper spray.

Timothy Thomas’s funeral on Saturday overflowed into the streets outside New Prospect Baptist Church, where a crowd of several thousand listened via sound system to speakers inside which included Cincinnati Mayor Luken and Ohio Governor Bob Taft. The Nation of Islam provided security and the New Black Panther Party acted as pallbearers setting a defiant mood for an appropriately political funeral.

Around 4pm, when the mourners were beginning to leave the funeral en masse, Cincinnati cops staged a paramilitary style assault on the crowd. Four cop cars pulled up in an alley and without warning fired beanbags into the crowd, sending hundreds screaming and running for cover.

"It was like a drive-by," said David Waggoner of Louisville KY, who witnessed the entire incident. "They didn’t say ‘freeze’, they didn’t say nothing. They just jumped out and shot."

Christine Jones, was shot in the neck, kidneys and abdomen. She had been carrying a banner belonging to the Louisville organization Citizens Against Police Abuse at the time. The crowd ran away and the police pursued and continued firing. A seven year-old child was also hit by the beanbag rounds. The child’s mother picked him up and fled immediately. The crowd of mourners, who were mostly black, was very supportive of Christine Jones, who is white.

"All of these people who said that this was a white-black thing, that Cincinnati’s black people are anti-white, are wrong. Black people pulled Christine into a doorway to protect her after the cops shot her," said Tom Pearce of Louisville. "

In the meantime hundreds of mostly white activists sat gathered in Burlington, VT enduring hellish meetings and plotting ways through the Canadian border. A small group of us found ourselves talking more and more about Cincinnati. There was some movement towards gathering all the folks who couldn’t make it across the border to head straight for Cincinnati to support the uprising. As far as material solidarity, it would have been ideal. The anti-globalization movement has spent over a year now getting organized and mobile. Hundreds of us have direct experience as street medics, working the media, organizing actions, doing legal support, as well as in self-defense and street combat against police. Knowledge that should be spread around. But our movement, despite some efforts to change is still a predominantly white one with problems making strong connections to poor people of color in the cities we live in. This mostly unconscious racism bubbles to the surface of this movement every time we make a move it seems. But where it shines the most is where anarchists don’t make the obvious connections.

When I mentioned Cincinnati as a place where anti-FTAA protesters may want to go if they get turned away at the Canadian border, an elderly peace activist asked: "Why, is there anything political going on there?" Though as an activist she should have known better, from what we’d read in the papers, her response almost made sense. Corporate media spin was all about "race riots," and emphasizing the need to stop the violence. The racist assumption that a revolt against life under a brutal racist police equals some sort of outburst of reciprocal racism shows plain as day the allegiance between corporate media and the corporate state and colonial conditions that police protect. What the corporate media chose to focus on was all about the terror and fear supposedly inspired by the rioters, ignoring more or less that for many people who grew up living in fear for their lives of police where feeling a rare and precious strength and solidarity. That rioting and turning the tables on imposed social relationships such as police and the sacredness of property is not political was an obvious editorial line. But it’s a lie that infects AP readers everywhere and plays directly into the fear wing of the Prison Industrial Complex. This production of fear directly helps reproduce systemic and social racism, our favorite executioner Lynne Abraham being a perfect example of this. Thing is, the riot simply is political. Fucking shit up in the streets goes way beyond the acts of unfocused internalized rage that go on in colonized communities all the time. It’s an act of spontaneously turning oppressive social relationships on their head. Rioters challenged the violence and arrogance of state power with a militancy that just doesn’t exist in a society where police bullets and prisons are more or less unquestioned daily realities.

Where rioting isn’t understood as an expression of refusal is where at least some institutional faith still exists. It became obvious in Cincinnati just how quickly those more tied in to reformist agendas jumped to stop the rebellion. They pleaded for "peace" from black Cincinnati, but not from the police, who throughout the rebellion beat, arrested, shot at folks with beanbag guns and pepper sprayed people (sometimes after being handcuffed and defenseless). Popular demands that police be fired and prosecuted seemed to take a back seat to "restoring calm." And it’s typical for ordinarily progressive or well meaning leaders to take the position of restoring business as usual when their terrain of struggle has always been with one foot in City Hall, haggling with the status quo for concessions. Popular uprising just doesn’t transpire on that sort of territory. Every large-scale riot is territory seized from the constraints imposed by manipulators of capital and power. If only for a short time, behavior changes. People who’ve never had it, or where always told to wait or let others arrange it, get a taste of hope and realize their collective power. Without pretending the Cincinnati rebellion was without its fucked up elements, it was undeniably about taking control back from forces of oppression. This isn’t something that needs to be explained to anyone involved in the rioting.

Many of us in the anarchist community actually did make the instant connection with the Cincinnati uprising. A spontaneous expression of violence against imposed conditions of misery that exist in cities across the US. This time around there were no NGOs putting out a call to action. No dedicated activists figuring out action plans, riling people up for months ahead of time. Cincinnati was about resistance from the heart, spontaneous and political-an American Intifada. We read between the lines of corporate fear and saw an uprising that gave us hope and will no doubt inspire the fire of rebellion to spread.
