"Freedom of the Press" apparently is not alive and well in America. Considering the death threats and condemnations that La Voz de Aztlan has received, from individuals and mainstream national organizations, it looks like we are not living in the land of the First Amendment but in some kind of horrid Orson Wells 1984 Republic.

We are getting tantalizing clues as to who might be behind the criminal acts designed to silence La Voz de Aztlan. The terrorist acts against our publication began when we first published an article we titled "La Raza and Jews on Collision Course in Alta California". Life, since then, has not been the same for our staff and publisher. Our homes and our families have now been threaten!

The first warning came from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) when their National Counsel sent us a strongly worded message to "apologize to the Jewish community" for writing the editorial. We have read and read our own editorial but still can not find what great transgression we have committed. Was it because we dared to print the word "Jew"? We do not understand. We personally do not get bent out of shape when someone prints the word "Mexican".

Then came actual death threats from persons associated with the Independent Media Organization that has a worldwide network of websites and purport to be anti-globalists. One of these individuals posted hate messages against La Voz de Aztlan in the indyMedia website and then sent us e-mail stating that they will raise funds to pay for the assassination of our publisher. He then sent another e-mail with the correct address and telephone number of our publisher. It looks like these terrorists have a lot of information on journalists that publish information they do not like. The Independent Media Organization is supposed to be liberal and progressive but judging by the actions of these individuals, it looks like their true agenda may be more sinister. It also may be that the organization has now been infiltrated by anti-Mexican racist elements bent on pushing the Zionist agenda.

The network of individuals that have gathered to destroy La Voz de Aztlan is large and widespread. We received one alert by one of our subscribers that an individual was posting hate commentary against La Voz de Aztlan and our publisher in a well known Chicano chat room based in Los Angeles. Our investigation uncovered a series of messages that were posted by a person that works for the Physics Department of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). The threats made references that he knew where our publisher's wife works and then gave the correct information. Calls to the Chairman of the Department, Ferdinand Coroniti, have not been returned. The individual making the threats from a physics laboratory computer apparently spends most of his working time in the chat room. Is it possible that this individual is simply a COINTELPRO type agent with a cover? We do not know.

An ultimate insult against La Voz de Aztlan came recently from Raul Yzaguirre who is the National President of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). NCLR like MALDEF is in the pockets of both the alcohol and tobacco industries. From the wording of the condemnation, it appears that they twisted his arm to write it. Mr. Yzaguirre receives millions per year to push cigarettes and booze in our community and he doe not want to loose his funding. We heard that his salary is in the six figures and has enriched himself on the backs of La Raza. We can understand the condemnations of organizations like the anti-Mexican Federation of Americans for Immigration Reform (FAIR) . . . but NCLR? "Que La Virgen de Guadalupe protega nuestra raza!" We do not understand what he thinks his condemnation will achieve. One thing for sure, it has exposed and unmasked his true colors to La Raza de Aztlan.

Another disappointment to many in our community was an article written by the so called "father of Chicano Studies", Rudy Acuna. He did not go as far as naming La Voz de Aztlan but everyone in our "movimiento" knew exactly what he was referring to in his timid statements. The article "The Thin Line" is published in his personal website. It makes general statements that our articles are "stupid" and in "the gutter". He also says that we "accused a national Chicano academic organization of being anti-God because it took a strong stance against homophobia." We assume that he is referring to our criticisms of the National Association of Chicana and Chicano Studies (NACCS).

Chicano Studies is now in a state of extreme decay. Judging from the types of papers presented at their national conferences, it looks like soon, no decent mother and father will ever encourage their sons and daughters to major in this "fuzzy" discipline. The way in which the National Association of Chicano and Chicana Studies (NACCS) is organized tells volumes of where they are. The organization is governed through seven caucuses. The first four are the Student Caucus, Community Caucus, Compas Caucus and Chicana Caucus. The other three are the K-12 Caucus, the Joto Caucus and the Lesbian Caucus. Joto is the Spanish word for "fag". The academic debauchery practiced by NACCS at their national conferences is notorious. One incident occurred when NACCS held their national conference in Mexico City. To celebrate, the Joto and Lesbian Caucuses had planned to hold an event they called "Noche de Joteria" at the family oriented Mexico City downtown Marlowe Hotel. "Noche de Joteria" translates into "Night of Faggotry". When the management of the hotel obtained a "flyer" of the planned event, they went ballistic. The hotel asked all the gay faculty and students to leave the hotel. It made international news and the Los Angeles Times as well as the magazine LAWEEKLY covered the story.

The Chicano Studies/Jewish connection is indisputable. The Chicano Studies curriculum is designed to brainwashed Chicano students. Ask any Chicano Studies graduate about what he thinks about the gay lifestyle or the bible, and you will get a clear picture of what they are teaching. Chicano Studies students are also being trained to parrot words like "hate", "anti-semitic", and "homophobic". Whenever anyone attempts to dialogue about certain social issues, they have been programmed to repeat statements such as "You hate", "You are anti-semitic" and "You are homophobic". They can no longer think for themselves or analyze anything, specially issues of extreme importance to the survival of our community.

La Voz de Aztlan will not be intimidated. No amount of condemnations or death threats will silence us. In the tradition of Jovita Idar, we will continue to be "la voz" of our community. We will continue to articulate our issues in the "daylight" of truth and not in the "darkness" of fear. To all you "vendidos" who have been paid to condemn La Voz de Aztlan...shame on you! The person who allegedly threatend La Voz de Aztlan is not known to be a member of the IMC. The Newswire is an "open publishing" feature which is available to anyone who can post a news story via a web browser.

The content is not edited, and messages are only removed upon request by the author. The author of the other two articles posted to the newswire claimed that he did not post them himself, and accused the IMC of copyright violation, so the articles were removed.

I think Mr. C is being paranoid. The organization has a history of going after people online, justified or not. It seems to me, they are attacking out of fear, and this fear is partially delusional. Rather than use their analytical skills to figure out proactive steps to reach their goals, they speculate on possible injustices against their organization, and then hold them up as evidence of a world gone mad. It's childish, selfish, and a waste of energy.

It's funny that La Voz is railing about the "Jewish" conspiracy when they themselves still subscribe to the theory that Aztlan is the homeland of Chicanos. Taking the same argument that La Voz uses whenever charges of anti-Semiticism are levied against them ("we only hate Zionism"), La Voz should hate itself for advocating what Zionism advocates, albeit through a Chicano point of view.
