Activists crash Moreno Valley council meeting party to discuss shooting

Since the officer involved shooting death of Dante Meniefield, city officials have been quiet. On April 3, activists paid them a visit and demanded that the discussion of drive-way widths and mansion space be put aside to talk about the killing that took place only two blocks away from City Hall.

Since the fatal shooting of Dante Meniefield last month, the city government of Moreno Valley had been silent on the tragic death of a young Black man several blocks away from City Hall. On April 3, 14 activists appeared at a city council meeting and demanded that the city hear their concerns about the apathetic stance of its leadership. The Council agreed, grudgingly.

The activists, who initially numbered 10, came to the meeting 45 minutes after it started, due to a misunderstanding of the scheduled time for the joint session between the Council and the Planning Commission, and missed the original public comment time. They sat and listened in the cramped chambers as the Council and staff members listened to a 40 minute PowerPoint presentation on conflict of interest issues that the councilmembers should have been aware of, before running for office. The first attempt to fill out public comment slips and turn them in, was denied, because the public comment at the next meeting was restricted to issues under the jurisdiction of the Public facilities loaning Corporation. The activists convened in the hall, followed by a curious media reporter. Then, they walked with four more people, and stood on the side of the chambers, as anxious city officials studied them.
