EFJ--How can we best support you while you are behind bars?
Leonard Peltier: "Stay in touch with the Leonard peltier Defense Committee and keep up on our efforts and goals. Fundraising is also a crucial element."
EFJ---Was there a recognized point in time when AIM picked up the gun? When did you know it was time to or not to?
Leonard peltier: "We picked up the gun when Indian people were being killed indiscriminatelt. We picked up the gun in self-defense. You will find in many struggles, especially in indigenous struggles, that people do not want to pick up the gun, but come to a point where they feel they have no choice. The only choice is to die passively whether it be at the hands of an oppressor, starvation or hopelessness, or to die standing up. If I am released, I certainly do not intend to 'pick up the gun.' Today is a very different time from back then and we have different resources and ways to improve and to safeguard the lives of our people. But I do not believe that self-defense is a crime."
EFJ--"where are you going to put your energy when you get out?"
Leonard Peltier "I plan to help others dealing with injustices. Others who have been wrongly convicted. I want to use the notoriety I have gained to begin a foundation supporting schools on reservations that teach both contemporary skills and traditional Native ways, rehab centers, independent businesses that serve the community and help establish self suffiency. There is a lot I want to do. I ALSO WANT TO SPEND SOME QUIET TIME WITH MY FAMILY, PAINTING, RIDING WITH HORSES. There is no end to the dreams I have of freedom.
Write Leonard at #89637-132 POB 1000 Leavenworth Kansas 66048 Tell him Paul Hays at 89.3 In Atlanta is making Shirts for sale with a Kopelli and that I wish him, Mumia, Fred Hampton Jr. and many others a Happy Equinox and a successfully constructed sweat lodge. Thank him especially for making contributions to policy and keeping the needs of our nation in tune with the needs of his millions of followers.
