ARTSPEAKS! Jan 28th & 29th @ El Rey Theater

by Refuse & Resist Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at 4:23 PM

Don't miss it

ARTSPEAKS! Jan 28th & 29th @ El Rey Theater

This year - we dedicate the event to Stolen Lives - a project by the Iris Baez Foundation, the National Lawyers Guild and the October 22nd Coalition Against Police Brutality and the Criminalization of a generation. Stolen Lives is the only national registry of lives lost at the hands of law enforcement. There are now over 2,000 names collected since the project began in 1996. ArtSpeaks! will give voice to those who can no longer speak.

This concert is happening at a time when the truth about police brutality has become part of the national conversation in unprecedented ways. There is not a week that goes by when millions of people are not touched by another victim's voice. The Stolen Lives Project has brought the families together nationwide and they are no longer silent. On October 22nd, 2,500 people marched in Los Angeles. In the face of rubber bullets and baton wielding police, the people, including many families who have lost a loved one to this same brutality, stood up and completed the rally. In the months to follow, we would be reminded again of the importance of this movement with the murder of Anthony Dwain Lee, shot in the back while attending a party in affluent Bel Air, and with the reversal of the first Rampart verdicts.

We also dedicate the event to Mumia Abu-Jamal, whose life we will not let them steal.

A portion of the proceeds will also go towards the future work of the Artist Network. Some of the projects that the Artist Network has worked on include: Mumia 911 the National Day of Art to Stop the Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal; Inside the Culture of Resistance, live interviews of Artists by Artists with Oscar Brown Jr., Danny Hoch, Reg E. Gaines, Culture Clash, and David Riker; and a tribute to the Life & Music of Horace Tapscott, a Man of the People, in Los Angeles and New York.

ArtSpeaks is truly a collaborative effort produced by artists who are part of the network.
