It's a very real possibility that the vote in the upcoming Presidential election, could be split, with Gore winning the Electoral vote and Bush winning the popular vote, or vice versa. This would case an uproar, by the supporters on the side of the winning candidate of the popular vote, and possible a very serious legal challenge. I think it would be a cause for some of us to make some more noise about the Illegitimacy of the whole damn system!
They could also tie in the electoral vote, 269 each. Then the House of Representatives gets to decide. But the Constitution doesn't say whether it's this Congress or the new one that takes office on January 3 that gets to decide. Each state gets one vote, and right now the Republicans control 25 of the state delegations, the Democrats 21, and four are split down the middle. If the Democrats take over more House seats and more of the state delegations, they're going to want the new Congress to decide after January 3. The Republicans would of course want the current Congress to decide. And even if they got their way, they still only have 25 states; a candidate needs a majority, 26, to win. Should be very interesting.
