Sydney Independent Media Centre

by Sydney IMC Thursday, Sep. 07, 2000 at 4:07 AM
imc-sydney@cat.org.au

An open letter to the World.

The Sydney Independent Media Center has established itself in order to provide the world with an open, public, and uncensored, outlet for the distribution of news surrounding to the Olympic Games, which will occur here in Sydney, Australia from September 15th until October 1st of this year. We have established an interactive Internet site (www.sydney.indymedia.org) where anyone can add stories, photographs, video, and audio contributions. We will also have a physical media collection venue to allow everyone in the local area to share with the international community the Olympic stories of social, economic, and environmental, injustice that centralized for-profit media refuses to tell.

After its birth during the failed World Trade Organization Millenium Round meetings in Seattle, Independent Media, or Indymedia, has exploded around the world and established itself as a credible and essential means by which any individual can share information about stories that affect all of us.

Indymedia has fueled a revolution of multimedia information dissemination and spawned a resurgence of the concept of open public media, while serving as an essential link in the globally unified movement to rectify the problems facing our World.

With Indymedia, this world has over 6 billion journalists, each of whom bears witness, each of whom has a voice.

We ask three things of you:

1) Go to the web site (www.sydney.indymedia.org) early and often- The international corporate media will unquestionably soak the World with shallow glossy trivia about the Olympic Games, pleasing the billion-dollar corporate sponsors while ignoring an abundance of unpleasant surrounding realities. You owe it to yourself to read up-to-the-minute stories from people who will cover the Sydney Games to make a difference, not to make a buck.

2) Spread the word - The wider the audience, the greater the impact. Help Indymedia grow by turning people onto this vessel for public media. Help distribute the information to those who have access to the Internet as well as those who do not.

Unless otherwise noted, all individuals who publish to the Sydney Independent Media Center freely offer their materials for reproduction and redistribution. Please copy and distribute the contributions far and wide.

3) Contribute - Indymedia exists not only to distribute information, but to receive it as well. Rather than passively participating, find the untold Olympic story in your locale and broadcast it to the World. Independent Media cannot exist without the participation of people like you, and we seek the broadest range of views and experiences possible - Across the spectrum and across the globe. Exercise your right and your responsibility to play a role in public media.

We look forward to your participation in the global media revolution.

This Should Be Good

by Hugh Stegman Thursday, Sep. 07, 2000 at 8:43 PM

This ought to be really interesting.

The Olympic Games are still an awesome event, but at least in the US media they have become a cornerstone of the Corporate Warm Fuzzy. The idea is to make Americans feel good by showing an endless parade of clean wholesome US kids saluting the flag from the victory stand, and to tell heartwarming little stories of how they conquered psoriasis and heartburn to make it there, and then to remind the viewers every 10 minutes that the athletes sacrificed for their dreams, but all YOU have to do to get yours is to buy, buy, buy.

The Nazis understood the psychology, but so do a growing number of Americans. Good luck, Sydney.

In solidarity,

-hugh
