Rage Against The Machine to play free gig as clinton sqauks

by abcdef Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 at 10:17 PM

Rage Against The Machine will play a free concert to kick off the Battle of Los Angeles

Rage Against the Machine is planning a free protest

concert on Monday, the opening day of the Democratic

National Convention.

The Los Angeles quartet will be performing music from it's

most recent album, the

"Battle of Los Angeles." in

the designated protest zone

across the street from

Staples Center.

President Clinton is scheduled to address the convention

inside Staples at just about the same time.

The Los Angeles Police Department is "gravely concerned"

about Monday's concert because the band could provoke a

volatile crowd prone to dangerous behavior, said LAPD

Commander Dave Kalish in an interview with the Los Angeles

Times.

Police watched nervously late yesterday afternoon as three

truckloads of stage and sound gear were unloaded at the protest

site. The show also features Ozomatli, an East Los Angeles

group that fuses traditional Afro-Latin styles with funk, a

knotty hip-hop sound and rock.

The band does not need a special city permit to hold its

concert in the designated protest zone because a federal judge

recently approved that area as an open demonstration site.

it is amazingly powerful to have rage at the

dnc - using music as a weapon in this

struggle for change is not to be taken for

granted...we must rise up together...all

kinds of struggle, be that marches, teach-ins

video, rallies, writings or music..these

are all revolutionary weapons and

together we can make change manifest

blessings

peace
