CNN coverage

by grog Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 at 10:00 AM

CNN pre-coverage of protests

The CNN website has headline news about the upcoming protests, emphasizing that "Schools . . . are putting their students through emergency training" in case things "get out of hand." Lt. Horace Frank was quoted as stating, "Some of these individuals are getting more and more violent towards innocent people in the community. That's a very big concern to us." The article goes on to state that eighteen police officers were injured during the Republican convention.

Such incredibly biased coverage of the protests is uncalled for. Please visit the CNN website, check out the article, and go to the Feedback section to express your concern about such coverage. Insist that they provide fair coverage of the protests by sending investigative reporters to they Philly prisons and the streets of LA.

Parents are trying to close schools

Actually, the cnn.com article is accurate.

Parents were interested in closing schools out of fears for their children who are very young (and unlikely to be able to fight back against black bloc anarchists bent on liberating property). Rather than close the schools down, they instead trained the students on how to lock themselves into the building, and have setup for an overnight stay if required.

Don't buy into the media propaganda!

by The Hollering Mangoo Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 at 1:48 PM

For "Anon" who wrote, "Parents are trying to close schools" why have you let the bias of the corporate press frighten you into characterising all protesters as "Black Bloc anarchists"? This is the same kind of propagandistic demonization of dissent practised by the late Soviet Union in response to the Democratic forces who united and ran the Comminists out of power...All protesters are "anarchists" eh?

Tell that to the United Steelworkers who demonstrated in Seattle against the WTO! Tell that to the Green Party! Tell that to the thousands of peaceful protesters of all ages, ethnicities, and political ideologies that filled the streets of Seattle and were met with gas and pepper spray for exercising their First amendment rights to peaceably assemble. Ask yourself this question, "What if American patriots during the American Revolution HADN"T dumped tea into Boston Harbor or stood up to the guns of the British during the Boston Massacre?" Gee-if there had been a CNN or a Gannet Corp. in the late 18th century maybe they wouldn't have and they would have just stuck their heads into the sand, become Tories, closed the schools and hoped that King George would have taken it into his royal heart to suddenly reverse his unfair taxation of the colonies...I gots news fer ya, "anon" He wouldn't have and things would have got worse...KIng George needed a wake up call just like George Bush and Al Gore do. BTW, to allay your paranoid media fed fears that there is a gigantic conspiracy of "anarchists" to "liberate property" Most of these modern protesters aren't even asking for more rights just the ones they supposedly already have...get a clue and stop bottle-feeding off the media lies spread by CNN and their peers.
