The anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima (August 6th) and Nagasaki (August 9th) heralding the beginning of the Atomic Age is protested each year in New Mexico at Los Alamos, the cradle of nuclear weapons. This year the protests were lively, colourful, and angry coming on the heels of a 30,000 acre fire that swept past the labs over contaminated "containment" areas releasing plutonium, strotium 90, uranium and other heavy metals into the atmosphere and surrounding environment. With the legacy of success demonstrated by the shutdown of the WTO last year, this year's protest was a loud and clear call to SHUT DOWN LOS ALAMOS NUCLEAR LABS by a contingent of protesters prepared to cross the line to make a non-violent statement about the continuing production of weapons of mass destruction, and the ensuing environmental effects on the southwest locale and global sphere.
