Digging dirt on Oxy

by Matt First Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000 at 3:12 PM

Occidental Chemical Corporation, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, is no stranger to diplacing people. Formerly Hooker Chemical and Plastics, the company was responsible for Love Canal, one of the most severe environmental disasters in this country.

Al Gore shows his true colors by holding stock and profiting from Occidental Petroleum. For those who are not familiar with the Love Canal story, it began with Hooker Chemical and Plastics. Starting in 1942, this company used a trenched area previously excavated for use as a canal as a landfill for industrial waste. Waste that filled the canal included by products of plastic production. Dioxin and Chlorinated organic compounds were a few of the Love contaminates. Plastisizers, such as Di-Octyl Phthalate (sic) or DOP, that are used in manufacturing plastic are today considered 'suspect' endocrine mimics. An endocrine mimic is a compound that has a similar structure as hormones such as estrogen. These commpounds are linked to birth defects and developmental problems. One might 'suspect' that these were also placed into the landfill.

About ten years later, Hooker covered the landfill and left the land. When houses and schools were built in the area, people noticed the coincidental rise in birth defects, miscarriages as well as strange odors. Hundreds of families were evacuated.

Now, as Occidental begins to try to devestate more lifes, our 'pro-environment' Veep is collecting dividends. We have seen Gore fail to stand on environmental issues, and now we watch as he supports these polluters and life destoyers. I am writing a letter to Gore, suggesting that he cash out his holdings in Occidental and use the money to protect native lands and/or use the money to clean up industrial wastelands. I recommend that you visit Occidental's web site. The profit from this company could also be put to good use. Maybe as a stockholder, Gore could sugggest reinvesting their billions of dollars into community clean up and improvement.
