Why I Hate Cops

by ch@nce Sunday, Aug. 06, 2000 at 1:21 AM
coh@sfo.com 415.346.3740 468 Turk St.

... when authority is multiplied by 9mm, the ultimate command and root product is DEATH, in English or Espa–ol.

WHY I HATE COPS

by chance martin

I don hate cops. IÕve had friends who were cops in every town where IÕve ever lived. One pal oÕ mine Ñ Cuddles to his friends Ñ drove the meat wagon (picking up corpses) for the Chicago police department. Another was Ziggy, a ex-junkie who submitted an application to the police department early in his recovery for a goof. Six months later he was still clean, still unemployed, and the rest of the story was pure irony.

Both these guys nearly drank themselves to death, as cops, before they got sober. They would go to AA meetings in uniform (alcoholism in the Chicago police department was so rampant during the mid Ô80Õs that their union successfully negotiated permission for Chicago PD members to attend AA meetings during duty hours). IÕd joke that some poor slob would really, REALLY want to get clean to willingly park his ass between those two grim faces over bad coffee in a room that smelled like an ashtray. Funny thing Ñ the longer they spent in recovery, the grimmer they were. The politics of their job, they confided, was what they really couldnÕt stomach.

Today neither of them is a cop, by choice. I was happy that conscience figured largely among the intangibles they recovered Ñ and pissed Ôcause I had to find someone else to fix my parking tickets.

My perceptions, and interactions, with cops changed after an incident I witnessed a few weeks after I moved to LA. I was smoking a cigarette in front of my new LA residence on Rampart near 6th when I witnessed four cruisers roll up out of nowhere on three young Latinos in a VW bug. All eight officers popped out of their cruisers and had their weapons trained on the VW.

They began instructing the passengers (in the most imperative use of the English language IÕve ever heard) to crawl on their bellies out of the car and onto the summer-sticky, brick oven street. Problem was, the three suspectsÕ command of English didnÕt include the word "crawl," so they sat there sweating under gunpoint for an elastic moment that extruded into a quarter hour.

Another cruiser finally pulled up with someone who could provide a similarly oppressive monologue in Spanish over the cruiserÕs PA. The front-seat passengers made every earnest endeavor to slither from the car to the searing pavement, in obvious discomfort since they were wearing beach clothes.

Then came the guy in the back seatÕs turn. He began speaking very excitedly in the only language he knew, and IÕm thinking: this dudeÕs wacked and heÕs going to give all TEN cops the excuse theyÕre looking for to express-deliver a potential 160 steel-jacketed 9mm rounds right into the back seat of the VW. When four of the cops performed their well-rehearsed dance of duck-and-cover up to the car, I braced for the ugly, flat, slapping sounds of authority. And when authority is multiplied by 9mm, the ultimate command and root product is DEATH, in English or Espa–ol.

Amazingly, our amigo in the back seat was spared Ñ the point cop returned his weapon to his holster Ñ and I remembered to exhale. Two of the other three cops held the muzzles of their M-92s inches in front of the young manÕs eyes while the point cop dragged him from the back seat onto the pavement. Seems this dangerous suspect was in a hip cast, yÕsee. Then this heroic blue knight redrew his weapon to ensure the injured suspect hauled himself and his cast in a belly-crawl the required 20 feet from the vehicle (kinda like "injured suspect" was synonymous with "wounded animal").

The three suspects were then left shackled and face-down on the blistering street while the foiled marksmen turned most of their efforts to moving the five-block backup of Sunday afternoon traffic past the scene. Two cops spent the next half-hour tearing the interior out of the shiny custom bug, but their search produced no justification for their heavy-handed tactics.

When LAPDÕs finest finally, reluctantly released the VW and its passengers an hour later, the trio of victims positively beamed in sullen relief. From the sidewalk where I watched this state-sanctioned terrorist act, I listened and I never heard anything like an apology from any of the officers involved Ñ although IÕm certain MondayÕs roll call included remedial training in Spanish equivalents for the English word "crawl."

A few years later, as I watched much of Los Angeles burning during the Rodney King uprising, two thoughts dominated the few which managed to penetrate my shock. First, half of the people of Los Angeles were on the streets looking to settle the score on every injustice that they had ever endured. This debt was obviously of considerable scope Ñ the fires burned for days. (whole families were looting, Ma and Pa helping Baby Girl over the shards of the broken window and into the toy aisle of Thrifty Drug, fer chrisÕsake).

Second, WHERE WERE ALL THOSE HEROIC BLUE KNIGHTS, festooned with symbols and devices of humiliation, pain and death? Where was the death-whisper of those gun-muzzles, the steel-jacketed sounds of authority?

I left LA soon after, and never heard the official answers to these questions. I doubt they would hold water. The real answers probably burned in a canyon fire, or were buried in the Northridge quake. And sometimes, I find it entirely pleasing to believe that Mother Earth decided it was payback time, too.

Okay I had my back stole by some fucking crackwhore because I wouldn't pull tricks for her and smoke crack like her. I fucking left the place we were at but she fucking grabbed my bag off my back as mI was leaving.

I was waiting outside of her place yelling up when the fucking security calls the cops.

Instead of doing anything the cops call for back up and twist my arm (which I just got out of a cast) and basically rough up and beat all 90lbs and fivve foot two of me. I have bruises all over me and a black eye... I don't have any of my stuff (they didn't even go to the place) plus they kept my smokes and put me in the paddywagon

I hate cops in general anyways, i hate anyone who imposes authority on my freedoms, BUT i really hate Seattle Police (East Precinct) because they gave me a death threat on September 11,1996, there must have been 30 or 40 cops who gave the same threat over and over, they had chased me in every store i went to, even Central Towing was involved in chasing me, i had a guy at QFC tell me he was a cop and asked me to give him my coat because it had an electronic bug in it, so of course i gave it to him! there was a murder contract out on me.

It is plain to see all of you hate cops. Why? Because you got busted for doing something illegal. Well, when someone points a gun a your head and blows your head off, I bet you wish a cop was there so he could have shot theat person first, before they shot you. You have no idea what a cops' job is really like, so don't say shit. You have no idea.

Cops are bad news

by me and only me Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at 2:15 AM

I hate cops. I understand that they're job is to "serve and protect", but around here, it's best just to handle things for yourself because cops never make anything better. Cops spell trouble, always. It doesn't matter if I've done something or not, I am always suspect because of how I look and where I am. This is unfair and we all know it. just because I live on "the wrong side of the tracks" does not mean that I'm selling peddling crack or stealing from old ladies. Cops are discriminatory and violent without purpose.

Thats not the case

by c Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003 at 2:51 PM

The reason I don't believe in police is they are never there to help you they are only there to hurt you. Whatever happened to "protect and serve"? Treating everyone like criminals and disrespecting innocent people seem to be a major part of the job description for cops. Where were the police when my car got stolen with a uhaul on back with everything I own in it? I had just graduated from college and was in the middle of a move and they didn't do a thing to help me. All the Houston police department did was have my car towed. They didn't look for anyone, dust for prints, or even act like they cared. In fact the police officer that notified me that my car had been found stripped clean and still running, was a very serious asshole to me. Look, if police are not going to help citizens with issues like these then how do they expect us to appreciate what they are doing when they are writing traffic tickets and having an attitude? Something needs to be done! They need to start treating people with respect. Police departments need to understand what their motto "Protect and Serve" really means and they need to start living up to it.

I don't cry when cops die

by MaXiMiM Wednesday, May. 12, 2004 at 4:07 AM

I've learned that cops are useless and even dangerous over the course of my life. I respect the law and even those who are charged to uphold it - but the police departments are not doing a thing about crime. I've reported several thefts and even the licience plate of a hit & run, But the police have never EVER solved one of those cases.

However, The cops have ALWAYS been there if i managed to violate the tinest stupidest f*cking law. Not only do they give me a hefty fine, but they humilate me by searching me and my car, inquiring guilt of things such as " do these tags belong to this car?" "Have you been drinking or doing drugs?"

Just because i'm A young Hispanic male with long hair and an intimadating physical stature, doesn't make me guilty.

I've had cops draw guns at me and yell they were going to shoot me in the face if i moved. What was i guilty of? I was driving with my friend back from getting a bite to eat. The police were searching for some youths who knocked over a convient store.

The police have stolen more money from me then any thief ever has. They have made me feel more threatened for my life then any thug ever has. I would easly put a bullet in the back of every cops head i met if I wasn't a religious person. I don't feel sorry for cops who die. They chose to walk that path. I only feel sorry for those close to them.

by lucius Wednesday, May. 12, 2004 at 2:01 PM

To everyone who has been saying that cops are all this or that.... fuck you ll. Are you familiar with the law of averages? Could you wrap your minds around the notion that only SOME people with mean, or authoritarian, personalities are attracted to the uniform because it bestows power, but there are just as many who do it because they actually want to serve and protect the citizenry, equally? You're no better than the asshole in the corner who's "spic" race-baiting. Or are you just more rabble-rousers, come to muddy the waters of dissent?

AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted

by MaXiMiM Wednesday, May. 12, 2004 at 5:58 PM

Lets get back to the subject. I will refrain from advocating violence against cops or rounding them all up into one big group. I hope you cops out there will stop with the racial slurs and break through your sphere of ignorance so that we may enter into this civil discourse in a civilized manner.

The point of my little story (the one I first posted) was I’m tired of cops hassling us, the average Joe driving to work or back from school. I always see police sitting on their ass at a 7-11 or parked at the side of a road looking for that “menace to society” who didn’t signal when he turned.

I hate the policeman who assume your guilty just because you’re a minority and they believe all of the stereotypes they heard at the last Klu Klux Klan meeting.

I hate the policeman who stop you for a broken tail light and ask you if those tags belong to this car.

Why can’t we have a law enforcement that treats its citizens with respect and not as potential criminals. Some cops act as if their gun and badge make them demi-gods.

I once asked a cop ( while he was writing me a 125$ for riding my bike on the side-walk ) why was he not searching for real criminals - like the ones who had broken into my car recently , or the guy who had tried to rape a girl on campus, or the man who held up a store down the street at gun point ( I happened to be the cashier on the other side of the gun ) Out of all the possible things he could be doing, running things to the lab, searching crime scenes, doing some detective work, staking out places where crime is likely to take place again.

He told me this is the only way we find people like that, by stopping everyone. I can see his rationale. Its hard work to find criminals or stop crime. I understand this. Cops also have to watch their backs 24-7 , many people despise them and they have to deal with some of the worst scum of the Earth.

I think police need to back off the average, non-criminal, working man or women. We try our best to obey the law. We are just trying to make a living and enjoy our short little lives. The word police has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

They are making more enemies out of people who were potential allies , just because they think they are so powerful that they don’t’ need us. If they truly believe that then they are in for some serious trouble ahead of them.

I really hope things change. I would rather have the police as a friend then an enemy. I would prefer to love them and wish them well then harm. When I see a policeman, I want to feel safe and think that he is there to protect me, not that “oh crap I’m gonna get a ticket” or feel nervous when I have done nothing wrong.

by lucius Thursday, May. 13, 2004 at 7:55 PM

MaXiMiM,

I wasn't responding so much to your message, but thanks for clarifying those points. I believe that prejudice is always a double-edged sword, since it can apply to anything that distinguishes people from each other, and there are so many ways that people are superficially different.

It goes something like this: "The star-bellied Sneeches are violently oppressing us; the plain-bellied Sneeches need to show them who's better, and we won't show any mercy this time." Insert "discriminating against," or any other kind of inequality, in place of "oppressing," and there you have the ideological roots of bigotry.

So, qualifiers are a good way to avoid feeding into the same root ideology of generalization. "SOME cops suck." "MOST cops in this area are fans of racial profiling, and won't lift a finger to help minorities." If people don't try to distinguish "some" from "all," you may bring about change on the surface, but whatever the apparent difference, the toxic force of hate will remain.
