People Skills

by coutesy of the LAPD Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 9:39 PM

A helpful reminder to the LAPD who are monitoring this site -- "people skills" are allegedly the route for promotion in your army division.

[from the LAPD recrutment web page]

THE POLICE OFFICER JOB PREVIEW

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE FILLING OUT YOUR APPLICATION

The City of Los Angeles strives to hire the best candidate for every position. Our goal is to fill each job with a person who is well qualified, has an interest in the job, and who will be committed to a career in that field. To do this, we feel it is important to give each applicant a realistic description of the job and its tasks so that the candidate can decide for him or herself if the position is truly one in which there is interest and ability to do well.

As a Police Officer with the City of Los Angeles, you will be required to perform a large variety of tasks. These tasks will encompass many diverse aspects including learned skills and "people" skills. Some of these may be appealing to you, some may not. Some of the skills you will need to perform will be taught to you in the Academy and some rely on traits you bring with you to the position. We urge you to consider the entire job of Police Officer and not just the exciting or glamorous aspects.

What follows is a realistic preview of the types of tasks which are required of all Los Angeles Police Officers. They are intended to give you a better understanding of the job and consequently your willingness and abilities to perform the job on a daily basis. The list is not intended to be exhaustive or to describe every task required of a Police Officer. Please take a moment to truly consider whether the job of Police Officer fits you, as well as whether you fit the job of Police Officer.

COMMUNICATION
Police Officers are required to fill out many different forms, logs, and reports. Correspondingly, Police Officers must write legibly and clearly and have a good working knowledge of English grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, and spelling. Police Officers must be concise, descriptive and thorough in all written documents.
Police Officers constantly communicate with members of the community. It is crucial to initiate contact with members of the community to better understand the needs and problems of a particular area. Police Officers must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the public on a daily basis. Police Officers also must interview and obtain information from victims and witnesses of crimes in a manner appropriate to the situation and culture of the people involved.

Police Officers meet with and make presentations to groups of residents and/or business people from various neighborhoods regarding local crime, traffic, and related problems.

Police Officers may be required to work the front desk at a police station. This involves numerous activities including answering phone calls from the public; taking reports; explaining the law and LAPD policies; listening and responding to complaints about police service, and handling complaints from citizens who walk into the station.

Police Officers must testify accurately and credibly in court regarding arrests, reports taken, evidence recovered, and victims' statements.

Police Officers must employ excellent listening skills, in person and on the telephone. Officers must listen closely to what is being said and retain that information, identifying needs and emotions being expressed and demonstrating interest and involvement.

Police Officers deal with all segments of society. Some members of the general public may have hostile feelings toward Police Officers and may express their hostility to the Officer in words or actions. A Police Officer must always behave professionally in the face of provocation.

Painted Smile

by greenrose Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 10:35 PM
earth@dot.com

I happened to be listening to the song "Painted Smile" by the Moody Blues while I was reading the job description for the LAPD (incl. the longer one on their website). All of a sudden, in my mind's eye, I was watching the entire LAPD workforce dancing & joining together in a magnificent piece of popular street theatre, complete with clown noses, home-made sets, puppets and rock bands, on the busiest street of L.A.! "I can dance, I can sing. Just give me a chance, to do my turn for you! There's a chance I'll slip, but with stiff upper lip, I'll sing my song for you! Laughter is free, but it's so hard to be a Jester all the time! No one's believin' I'm the same when I'm bleedin', and I hurt all the time inside!" The follow-up song, "Reflective Smile", is self-explanatory. (Napster if you're music collection is under 40.) So, if we don't want to be "Dust in the Wind" sooner than necessary, lets keep our voices and actions loud and clear! Anyone with Life-giving skills can apply! My thanks and applause to the Moody Blues & IMC.

Shooting innocent People endangers Cops

by Joseph Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 10:48 PM
josephedwardeisenschmidt@yahoo.com

Having seen what the police do to innocent bystanders in Seattle at W T O , and realizing that the officers lives are at risk from this behavior makes us all less safe. All rational people want calm, well led police, in fact our very lives may depend on it. The politicos that direct line officers to do violence against children, much less protesters, do immediate harm to our relationship with those who really should be among our 'finest. Remember, every cop you see on the street is a Union member, making $30,000 - $60,000. They are not allowed to go after the million dollar crooks, and are at least as mad about that as the rest of us. Come on people, there are real jackass criminals out there. Predators. Can you imagine for just a minute what we could uncover with a powerful sense of morality, combined with the resources of the FBI etc. Gore says equal pay for equal work. Good! I say equal time for equal crime! You steal 1 dollar, you get one hour behind bars. Period. You steal $1,000,000 , and you'll wish you hadn't! I can live with that. Cops could live with that. But lawyers could never live with that. Some day we will indeed have "Equal Justice Under Law".

A Suggestion

by greenrose Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 11:27 PM

Can I offer you a suggestion, Joseph? Please read the extensive material included in all the IMC websites regarding WHY people are protesting in the streets all over the world. And the plans for our continued protests all over the world because of injustice perpetrated by our so-called "leaders" of business and military. There are also many links to other sites & alternative newspapers & books that you could read to inform yourself before making overly simplified statetments like you did. Do you actually think people are marching to promote thievery and other crimes? Before you start talking about "morality" (which is a word that I find I rarely use any more), you might want to study up on the reams of writing, speaking, video, theatre, poetry & history that clearly shows the complex web of deceipt that is reaching a crescendo right now, so that people can no longer stay quiet about it any longer. Included in all this educational quagmire (which I've spent the last 10 years sifting through on my own time) are various dialogues about possible visionary & progressive ways of dealing with violent or anti-social behaviour in communities. Before you even get to that point, I think you'd have to do some 180 degree turns in certain facets of your thought structures. The rest is a piece of cake. Peace.

Good Cop Bad Cop

by Local Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 at 11:36 PM

This week I was photographing a line of riot police who were grimly guarding an empty alley. One cop in the line asked me very nicely where he could get a copy of the picture of him (how often do they get into full battle armor costumes after all?) As I approached him with the IMC web address -- slowly, both hands visible, press badge out. His Leader shouted "Back! Back! Get BACK!" I shrugged, and backed away. Good cop looked sad and apologized for getting me yelled at.

Some cops have really enjoyed the chance to use their shotguns and nightsticks on human flesh. Some think standing in 90 degree heat in full black bodyarmor to guard an empty alleyway is fucked, and that people should be able to publicly speak their minds. When you think about it, the cops are doing street theater, but like it or not they all got cast as storm troopers and the blood is real.

Although we must defend ourselves from fascist enforcers, we should also try to kindly convince the foot soldiers in the occupying army that their leaders are insane. Loosing the support of the army is one of the fastest ways for a dictatorship to fall.

American English

by Winston Smith Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000 at 1:07 AM
Da Hood

There are many different languages that make up American English. Infact, this stupid country is so isolated from reality that almost every individual has their own sub-language. It is not the words spoken, nor the accent spoken in, it is the way it is spoken. People are more likely to listen to someone they understand and are comfortable with, than someone they don't know and don't share a perspective with. If you want to get through to people of all different American classes and cultures you must speak their language, even if you have to act like them. For example; when talking to a redneck cop, you must acknowledge certain minor facts like that they probably own, have owned, or have ridden a horse; they most likely are either veterens, ex-high school bullies (jocks), or religious in a right wing sort of way; and they always love America becuase that is who employs them. Chances are this cop will likely favor you over most others due to charm, layed out as a sort of "good ol' boy" role play. When talking to a cop of any kind you must act as though you are sympathetic to their experiances and their jobs by being very mature, polite, and very cooperative, that is what they like. There is a human being under that riot gear, there is a person under that badge of authority. Cops are not suppose to act the way they did with the two imc journalists who were followed for 15 miles, and none of these above "peace with police" tactics in speaking their language would've worked. The LAPD had a specific interest in pulling those two over, which was not in the interest of public safety, and that is not legal.
We can relate to any people, and liberation will occure as soon as we begin to speak the languages of American English. There are all kinds of different ways of speaking English in America, all must learn them all so we can all communicate. When speaking to poor people who don't vote, you must consider that they are into something else. You must find out what, and that means you must converse on a friendly level. Most of them don't want to get blown away with political knowledge, obviously, so you must make sure it sounds as though it could interest or benefit them. They are easy to find, most of them smoke pot, and they listen to pop music. There are also many who don't vote because they just don't understand it, they don't mind talking about politics usually, but they are not always very interesting to talk to. You must consider a simple way of explaining things to them.
The problem is that there are no specific groups, people are individually isolated in this country, thus they must be individually liberated in order to understand what affects them. The people I described above are merely examples, there are NO groups, you will find people of all types, and all people can be unpredictable and original. The key is to be open-minded and non-biased in ever thing you do, be an observer and anylize all that you experience or witness in some way, and all those whom you speak with. The point is, get to know everyone in the world, study people and find ways to communicate commonly with all cultures and languages that you can possibly handle. Start in the U$A, unless you live in a different nation's boundries, once we all begin to see eye to eye, due to understanding and accepting one another, a true movement of change will be possible. United we stand, divided we fall.

Peace

Revelations

by sarin Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000 at 5:58 AM
sarin@devo.com

Not that I haven't yelled at cops and doe some rather aggressive things in the past but this is what set me off in LA:

I watched at the south fence of the protest pit on monday night as the tow anarchists valiently clung to the fence and oneat a time struggled toclimb up and wave their flags. The first must hae taken 50-100 paintball shots at close range into his chest and head. I was awestruck. The second the jumped up there, he too being fired at. Again I was amazed, but mostly kept quiet apart from cheering them on.

Then a person approached to pass up a bottle of water for their pepper-spray leden faces still wincing in pain. The police opened up on the person passing up the water bottle.

That was too much for me. I yelled as loudly as possible, "WHAT THE FUCK IS WROG WITH YOU?! ITS WATER! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH GIVING A PERSON WATER??"

After screaming an officer who had been walking the lines with a video camera stoopped and trained it on me. He moved his head away from the view finder and glared at me. It was a hard cold glare. He didnt blink. I tried to out sare him (now I wish I had seductively licked my lips at him) but he shook me to the bone. I could read it on his face, "If only I had my gun instead of this camera..."

I had to turn away.
