How many of these spoiled white kids do you suppose live in Rampart Division?
I'm one of these "spoiled white kids." Except I'm not white - I'm Asian/white biracial, and I'm not a kid. Spoiled? Yeah, probably. And yeah, I live far from Rampart division, in Seattle. And that's precisely why I was able and motivated to do this CD and get arrested for this cause. Think about it - if you're a black or brown person who lives in Rampart division would you willingly hand yourself over to those bloodthirsty cops and jail guards? How dangerous would that be? The reason you often (not always!!) see people of privilege on the front lines of these protests is because some of us feel compelled to use our privilege for the good. Those of us who are educated on this stuff know that because of our skin color or class, we are likely to be treated far better than people with less privilege. In fact, the cops at the Rampart station and the upper echelons at the jail (not so much the rank-and-file guards) went out of their way to show how nice and reasonable they could be. It was a ridiculously condescending act. They also tried desperately to keep us apart from general population, knowing that the "real" prisoners would tell us what's up. And when we did get to mix with the women from general pop (overwhelmingly Black and poor), they told us incredible stories about the police and jail abuse they endure everyday. And they appreciated the action we took, though sadly, many were surprised that anyone even pays attention to these issues. Which begs the point: in this complacent society where so few are able and/or willing to take a stand on issues like police brutality, you want to say who should or shouldn't participate in those actions? Whatever.
PS Among those "spoiled white kids" are also a 50-something grandmother, an Asian woman, and 3 more biracial women, and a few women in their 30s. I'm not as familiar with the demographics of the men. I say this not to be defensive but just to point out that your assumption is not only incorrect, but also renders invisible those who don't fit into your description. But then, I guess you sure can tell a lot about people by looking at the backs of their heads.
I wonder how many stupid fat republicans call protesters "spoiled rich kids"
