If Voting Changed Anything...

by @ Sunday, Aug. 08, 2004 at 8:55 PM

...it would be illegal.

If Voting Changed Anything, It Would Be Illegal

In the year 2004, will the Democrats save us all from the madness of King George II and the pupper-master himself, Dick Cheney? After four years of a President who was handed the office by the Supreme Court and the Electoral College without securing even 48% of the popular vote, progressives are touting the "Anybody But Bush" campaign. Millions of dollars and countless hours of people's energy is being expended to elect "Anybody But Bush". Could this energy be better spent?

...because the ruling class requires apathy and fear.

There are great movements afoot and the mobilization required to effect them is possible only if the general facts are made clear to the now throughly befuddled and angry populous.

It wont be a quick painless fix, I predict because, like in the past periods of social progression, these psychopaths of power only relinquish power when they get the feel of the torch. And that usually happens when over reaching power navigates their piracy into unexpected shoals (Shoels). They trip over their own dicks big enough for everyone to see. Lines are drawn.

it was illegal

by more rational Monday, Aug. 09, 2004 at 4:52 PM

Until the 50s, it was effectively illegal for African Americans in the South to vote.

It used to be illegal for Asians to become citizens. So it was illegal for them.

It was illegal for women to vote, earlier this past century.

When the country was founded, it was only landed white men who were allowed to vote, and illegal for anyone else.

It is illegal for people under 18 to vote. The age used to be 21.

It's illegal for ex-felons to vote.

It's illegal for resident aliens to vote. It is, however, legal for citizens living abroad to vote here.

So, fuck yeah. Voting must have changed something, because, for most of American history, it was illegal for the majority of people in America to vote.

nice logic...

by @ Monday, Aug. 09, 2004 at 7:09 PM

voting didn't give all those people the right to vote. it was struggle outside of the voting system that did. women struggled for years in the streets to get the vote. it wasn't just one day that all the men voted to give women the right to vote because it was the right thing to do. Maybe the title of the article should be changed to If Voting for Democrats Changed Anything For the Better... but it's too late. the whole point is that too many people believe that if you go vote for Kerry, you can just go home and feel good about it, believing that any more than crumbs will be thrown to the majority of the US population that wants us out of Iraq, and wants universal health care.

"universal health care"

by crap Monday, Aug. 09, 2004 at 7:45 PM

Those who want "universal health care" should go to nations where they already have it. Inefficiency, low quality, waiting lists.

Observe the horrors of health care run by the same morons who can't run the post office.

===don't try to attack me personally to avoid the obvious, jackass. You know even less about me than you do about economics or politics( I didn't believe it either).

====Compare the nightmare of socialized medicine with the other way and then we'll see who fears for loved ones and where.

...if you gonna spew about "the real world", why don't you go out and try to live in it first.

Pithy words from a stupid socialist <--redundant

voting

by Life Under Terrorism Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at 9:19 PM

To a great extent, voting *did* expand voting rights. Abolitionists supported feminists. Feminists supported the Civil Rights Movement. So, expanding voting rights helps to expand voting rights, if it's done with the intent of universal sufferage.

I'm not saying that activism outside of the electoral system wasn't important. It was the primary way the rights were secured. But, ultimately, it required people who were represented within the system to agree that these disenfranchised groups should have the right to vote, and to change the law from within.

Moreover, if voting didn't matter, then, why was there such a focus on getting the vote? It means something to someone.

Voting is hardly the end-all of politics. If anything, it's just the initial move in the game; after the person's elected, you start to call in your favors.

If only you could resist the "ad hominem" attack, you'd be spared further beatings.

Then again, the day's incomplete until you call someone a "ship-tile."

And like the planet Arrakis, KPC produces the spice. It only exists on Arrakis. With the spice civilization is impossible.
