Temecula Night of Remembrance Reflects on a Year of War
Temecula, Calif. -- The members of Peace Works! in Temecula Valley will
gather on Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the Temecula Duck Pond Park to
mark the anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. This special Night
of Remembrance begins at dusk, 6:00 p.m., and will feature reflections
on the human cost of war as well as hope for a world of peace.
Friends and neighbors from Temecula, Murrieta, Wildomar, Lake Elsinore,
and beyond are invited to join us for this candlelight event beside the
9/11 commemoration statue at Duck Pond Park. Bring a small candle or
other light source, but leave the signs and banners at home, organizers
say.
"This is not a protest or a political rally," says Peace Works!
organizer Kynn Bartlett. "We may be angry or frustrated by the
situation, but this is a night to mourn. The cost of war has been
paid in blood, by the people of Iraq and by the men and women of
the United States military -- including some from our community."
Peace activists around the world have designated March 20 as a day of
action, with protests planned in Los Angeles, New York, London, San
Francisco, Rome, Chicago, and elsewhere. Local peace activists in
Riverside are riding to Los Angeles together in a bus chartered by
Riverside Area Peace and Justice Action (www.rapja.org).
"We're supportive of the rallies around the world," Bartlett said.
"However, that's not necessarily what our community here in the
Temecula Valley is really about. What plays in San Francisco won't
play in Temecula. That's why we chose a reflective candlelight vigil
for our commemoration."
