This is extrememly misleading. The vast majority of those who fled were exhorted to by their arab brethren, many of whom sold apparently worthless land to the Jews. They played on the native arabs' fears, and promised them that they would return after the Jews had been "pushed into the sea." Only that never happened, and the palestinian arabs were cynically turned into pawns by the Arab League. Some of the ohters stayed as armed combatants and were treated as such. Those who chose to stay and become part of the new state of Israel enjoy the full benefits of citizenship, including voting rights, representation in Knesset and Israeli passports.
