The vast majority of those who fled were exhorted to by their arab brethren, many of whom sold apparently worthless land to the Jews. They played on the native arabs' fears, and promised them that they would return after the Jews had been "pushed into the sea." Only that never happened, and the palestinian arabs were cynically turned into pawns by the Arab League. Some of the ohters stayed as armed combatants and were treated as such.\r\n\r\nThose who chose to stay and become part of the new state of Israel enjoy the full benefits of citizenship, including voting rights, representation in Knesset and Israeli passports. They actually enjoy some benefits not afforded to Israeli Jews, such as the option of serving in the military, as opposed to mandatory service.\r\n\r\nhttp:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/myths\/\r\nhttp:\/\/jewishinternetassociation.org\/historynutshell\/conflict.html\r\n\r\nKinda like the myth of the Jenin "massacre."
