Defending China's Right to Self-Determination

by Eric Mann Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000 at 8:04 PM

The struggle over granting or denying China "permanent normal” trade status with the U.S. and admission into the World Trade Organization—requires a strong intervention by those of us who see our work as building an anti-racist, anti-imperialist U.S. Left against U.S. chauvinism and in favor of China's rights to equality and self-determination.

Defending China's Right to Self-Determination:

Confronting Imperialism, Racism, Chauvinism, and Anti-Communism in the United States

China is imperialist too

by Jihad Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000 at 11:36 PM

China is guilty of being an imperialist power too. When it gets out of Tibet and recognizes the independence of Taiwan then it can be considered "non-imperialist"

But they're "our" despots

by Ishmael Alfredsson Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000 at 3:27 AM

For American lefties to support a government of tyrannical slavers like the current Chinese government, who are the accomplices of the very exploitation that they decry on the part of American corporations, is morally exactly equivalent to the U.S. government's historical pattern of supporting right-wing despots on the grounds that they're "our sons-of-bitches".

A rose is a rose is a rose, and a tyrant is a tyrant is a tyrant.

Do you follow me, girls?

I don't get it

by Michael Everett Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000 at 5:48 AM
ia728@primenet.com

I don't get it. Eric Mann spends hundreds of words denouncing capitalism, white people and the US government, then he turns around and argues for passage of their number one legislative goal of the year -- China PNTR.

What's wrong with conditioning trade on environmental, human rights and labor standards? And what's wrong with the people democratically deciding what those conditions should be. Isn't that what Seattle was all about? Isn't that what we're trying to do with Burma? Why is it OK to have sweatshops and political repression in China, but not in Burma or El Salvador? Sure China had a revolution once -- lot's of countries have, but so what?

I also don't get why the author is posting this now -- five months after the China bill won in the House. The Senate passed it a couple of weeks ago and the battle's over. Eric Mann and the corporations won -- the Seattle Coalition lost.

Rubbin' it in

by Jihad Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000 at 4:38 AM

Eric's just trying to rub it in. I say: "China out of Tibet!:"

Eric is right

by VL Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000 at 2:48 AM

Eric is not asking support for what you call a support for imperialistic china, imperialists or not, he says US should not flex its imperialistic power and try to dictate China's decisions for its own benefit. China being Imperialists or not, should not give the US right to flex its own imperial power.

And what does taiwan and tibet have to do with US imperialistic ventures? Imperialism should be opposed on all levels, US's imperialism cannot be justified because of china's imperialism.

china govt bad, us govt bad

by sam adams Wednesday, Nov. 01, 2000 at 1:55 PM

Eric seemed to downplay the BRUTALITY of the Communist Party tactics in keeping control. I am a US citizen who does not support, by paying taxes, the BRUTAL policies of the government elected to represent us. Eric's post seemed to quantify and support the policies of the Chinese in the face of fighting of the US Imperialists and trying to build their country since 1950. RE-READ YOUR POST and you will see what I mean.
