Women Wage Peace at Downtown Federal Building
Eleven women were arrested Wednesday morning for participating in a non-violent civil disobedience action in front of the downtown Federal Building. The event's organizers, Women of Conscience and the Global Women's Strike, are calling for an immediate end to Bush's War on Iraq. See photos of the action.

The day's events began with a peace rally attended by over one-hundred people, including actor Martin Sheen. Speakers at the rally reiterated that the immense resources allocated for the Iraq War (i.e. for killing), should, instead, go towards the work of caregivers and the welfare of people (i.e. for life). The civil disobedience action began after the rally when eleven women carried a clothesline full of children's bloodstained clothes out into Los Angeles Street. The women succeeded in stopping traffic for around one-hour. A prominent, colorful banner stated "War is not Good for Children and Other Living Things - Invest in Caring not Killing."

LA Peace Movement Marches on Mainstream Media
Around twenty-thousand anti-war demonstrators flooded the streets of downtown Hollywood today and marched on CNN. Declaring that the mainstream media has let down the people of America, and by extenision (since the good ole USA is (once again) a bloodthirsty empire), the people the world, with its distorted coverage and biased pro-war commentary, the demonstrators held a rally at the CNN building on Sunset Blvd. And what's a Hollywood event without stars: Eddie Vedder sang an a-capella song against SUVs, while Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, and Oscar nominated director Pedro Almodovar spoke to the overflowing crowd, declaring their solidarity with the international peace movement. At the end of the day 78 people were arrested, 40 via non-violent civil disobedience in the Hollywood and Vine intersection, 38 via police over-reaction. Once again, on balance, it was a spirited day for the anti-war cause -- no matter how CNN might try to marginalize us.

Westwood Anti-War Rallies Tense Beautiful Defiant Liberatory
A huge anti-war rally in Westwood became a standoff between demonstrators and police on Thursday Evening. Read an on-scene report; and a later commentary. Friday Evening in Westwood was equally inspiring.

Thousands Gather for Anti-War Rally Near the Oscars; Police State Violence Mars the Day
Today's "Awards Rally for Peace" was a colorful celebration of the creative energies that have gained expression in the massive anti-war movement in Southerhn California ("seeds of liberation" a friend of mine calls them).

Midway through the rally, a group of demonstratiors formed a breakaway march, with the intent of going out to Highland Blvd. and perhaps block the long line of limos heading to the Oscars. It was a golden opportunity to peacefully show the world that we are not going along with Bush's immoral, illegal War on Iraq -- sitting down in Highland Blvd, would've almost certainly delayed the start of the Oscars. Sadly, the group got within a few feet of reaching Highland before the cops arrived on the scene and blocked them. The cops surrounded the marchers for the next 45 mins (until all the limos had passed) before letting them go.

All day long the cops were aggressive, but after 4:30pm or so, they became increasingly belligerent; resulting in some stunning instances of brutality. Read reports from the day: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. UPDATED ACTION ALERT!
Now that the War has started -- get out, stay active! This weekend there will be major protests at CNN (Saturday in Hollywood) and the Oscars (Sunday in Hollywood). Arts in Action has open doors to people needing space to build protest art. Be smart, safe, and awake.

Protests as the War "Begins"
As words become action; conjecture, truth; and vows, realizations... The war has begun in earnest. While bombs are dropping and bullets flying, we say the dream-word "peace;" while blood splatters on the ground and blows into the sky, we hope that everyone could be safe, and fantasize that reason can prevail. Though we are at the begining of this horror, it is probably a good idea to start thinking about how to deal with the messy clean-up.

PEACE IN THE ELEVENTH HOUR!
March 15, 2003 Hundreds of thousands across the globe take to the streets for peace. In Los Angeles, despite torrential rain, Tens-of-Thousands came out to protest Bush's War On Iraq! Simply put, this was one of the most amazing days in the history of Southern Californian social justice activism.

Los Angelinos to Protest the Killing of an American Peace Activist by the Israeli Army
On Tuesday March 18th 2003, at 2pm, residents of Los Angeles who have been to Palestine as human rights observers/ activists will hold a Press Conference at the Offices of Senator Barbara Boxer - 312 N. Spring Street - to mourn the death of International Solidarity Movement activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed to death by an Israeli Army bulldozer on Sunday.

The organizers of the press conference are calling on the United States Government to: 1) Conduct a Full and Independent Inquiry in the Death of Rachel Corrie at the hands of the Israeli Military; 2) Take Responsibility for the Role that United States Military Aid played in her death; 3) End all US Military Aid to Israel; 4)Condemn the violent escalation of Israeli military actions in Palestine that have claimed hundreds of lives in the past few weeks.

Thousands Come Out Against the War in East LA
On Sunday, March 9, 2003, a couple thousand compañeros and compañeras marched through the center of East LA to protest Bush's War on Iraq. The day started with a 10am rally at Atlantic Park; the march then headed down Atlantic to Whittier and across to a large rally at Salazar Park. The event was organized by Latinos Against the War.

In a related story, Latino students at CalState Northridge are trying to kick the ROTC off campus for their targeting of poor an minority students- students from communities for with allready traditionaly low levels of access to higher education and high levels of military enrollment. Read more.



Women Say NO to WAR! "Invest in Caring Not Killing"
Today, March 8, 2003, an estimated two thousand people marched and rallied at the federal building in Westwood. They were protesting the anticipated war with Iraq on International Women's Day. Featured speakers included Ed Asner, Danny Glover, Ron Kovic, Wendy Malick of 'Just Shoot Me', and David Clennon who has recently withstood attempts to have him fired for his outspoken views on George Bush.

The march rallied in front of the corporate offices of Occidental Petrolium shouting such slogans as "NO BLOOD FOR OIL". The group then proceeded to the local starbucks and condemned their business practices.

The Board of Supervisors has voted to close the nationally renowned facitily June 30 if more funding is not brought into the health system. This is all happening in a time when our government is spending billions to drop bombs on innocent people. The cost of just a few of those bombs would be enough to keep Rancho open.

Attend Against Media Consolidation

After a far-away snowstorm canceled February's FCC event, USC will host FCC Commisioner Michael Copps and others for a panel on media consolidation. The event will take place at USC this Monday from 8:30 to 1:30. For USC info on the event, click here. Organizers had targeted the February event as a way to pressure the FCC and criticism friendly Copps to not relax the regulatory body's media ownership rules.
