Retenes 4 de julio 2011 / July 4 weekend checkpoints
2011-07-02 1:26 AM
Sigamos resistiendo.
Every July 4, the descendents of the settlers who appropriated these lands and the oppressed they have assimilated celebrate that conquest. They always seem to set up checkpoints around this time, too, as if to remind us who is not "American": the poor, the migrant, the latino/a, the African-American, the disabled, the young, the LGBT community. This violation of basic dignity, like all forms of conquest, is an attempt to place people into a category and, if possible, commodify them. Keep up the resistance.
The Automobile Club of Southern California also is offering its free "Tipsy Tow" service from 6 p.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Monday. People who have been drinking can get a free one-way tow and ride home for up to 7 miles by calling 800-400-4AAA. (image/jpeg)

Lista de Retenes / Checkpoint list for 11-13/feb/2011
2011-02-11 3:52 PM
Last weekend was Super Bowl weekend and there were many arrests and car confiscations of people that where not drunk, but people that the system won’t let drive legally. Nevertheless, repression does not stop, whether a it's holiday weekend or not. Therefore here is a short list of checkpoints for this weekend. Remember that just like repression does not rest, WE the resistance should also stay vigilant; don’t forget to denounce the checkpoints that you eye witness or if you hear about a checkpoint, share the information comrades! Lê’s “Gangster” Not Just Another Immigration Memoir
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine
2011-02-09 1:28 PM
Lê Thi Diem Thúy was brought to this country from Viet Nam by her father in 1978, when she was six, but her book “The Gangster We Are All Looking For,” honored this year by the San Diego Public Library and PBS as the 2011 “One Book, One San Diego,” isn’t your ordinary immigrant’s memoir. Presented as a novel — which allows Lê to tap her childhood for material without having to be bound by literal truth — “Gangster” is written in an almost poetic prose style, rich in nature imagery, characteristic of many Asian writers who learned English as a second language. Introducing, reading from and commenting on the book at the Public Library downtown on February 2, Lê gave a presentation touching on a lot of the issues raised in her book, including culture clashes, the role of the imagination and language as a force that can tear people apart as much as it can bring them together. Pomona Youth Rally for Immigrant Rights
2011-02-01 1:31 AM
Friday, January 28, 2011
POMONA, California - A youthful group of about fifty gathered in downtown Pomona to march, rally, and otherwise lift their voices about the need for immigration reform, social justice, and popular participation in decisionmaking processes. The march was organized and executed exclusively by the youth, who, while accepting the solidarity of more established movement activists, were also taking very seriously their responsibility to lead the movement. SAN BERNARDINO, California - A small but dedicated group of labor, immigrant rights, and religious activists gathered on International Migrant's Day to promote the human rights of migrants through the Mexican Christmas tradition of the posada. Beginning at San Bernardino's day labor corner, the processioners gathered under storm clouds just as the sun set to pray, lament the non-passage of the DREAM Act, and sing, before proceeding to St. John's Episcopal Church for tamales, champurrado, and piñata. Costa Mesa action against the "Rule of Law"
2010-06-19 8:45 AM
June 15, 2010 — The City of Costa Mesa passed a resolution labeling itself a "Rule of Law City" against the undocumented immigrants! Costa Mesa has declared war on our community!
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has provided the city an ICE agent in their local jail to deport anyone without the "proper documentation". How can we help the police if we don't trust them? Our families will be torn apart and we cannot let that happen!
The city has no jurisdiction on laws related to immigration, but yet the City Council has made of its city a smaller version of Arizona with the same harmful consequences on the people of Costa Mesa!
