From SPAIN- Alison Hughes reports on the new Iraqi parliament, which has yet to choose a prime minister. The new government will need to balance its relationships with its two main allies, the US and Iran. Iraqi citizens have been demonstrating since July demanding jobs, electricity, water, and an end to the theft of the oil wealth by political parties. In Brazil, former President Lula da Silva has been banned from running in next month's election. Lula is the clear leader in all opinion polls in the election run up. The UN and some international political leaders question the corruption charges against Lula. With Lula out of the election, the leading candidate is far-right lawmaker Jair Bolsanaro, known as the "Trump of Brazil," speaks highly of the military dictatorship that ruled the country between 1964 and 1985. British politicians and academics published a letter in The Guardian last Friday, condemning the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff two years ago.

From CUBA- Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff says that the coup that ousted her two years ago was a conspiracy involving the financial elite. The Cuban government reject the new version of accusations that US diplomats in Cuba were given concussions by microwave attacks. Venezuela denounced the US for a media campaign about a false humanitarian crisis in the country. Syrian President Assad said the US has adopted policies of threats, imposing sanctions, and supporting terrorism in his country. The Spanish Ministry of Defense is canceling an order from Saudi Arabia for 400 bombs because of fears that they will be used against civilians in Yemen- military equipment deals to Saudi Arabia have been cancelled by Sweden, Canada, Finland, Norway, Belgium and Germany.

From JAPAN- A powerful earthquake struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, but the nuclear power plants and storage are reportedly unharmed. For the first time the Japanese government has acknowledged the death of a worker at Fukushima to be caused by radiation exposure. A Japanese engineering firm is working with the Vietnamese Defense Ministry to decontaminate soil still toxic from Agent Orange used by the US military during the Vietnam war- 3 million Vietnamese still suffer from the effects of the herbicide. Libya's interim government announced a state of emergency from fighting between rival political groups.
