Lavrov in New York

by Stephen Lendman

If America had a foreign minister like Lavrov and others like him in top positions, we'd have world peace, not multiple direct and proxy wars of aggression against one country after another.

The scourge of mass slaughter and destruction would end. So would the threat of nuclear war.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists could roll back its Doomsday Clock to record safe levels.

Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Ukraine would be independently governed. Syria would have been spared war and mass displacement.

Efforts to replace Venezuela's model democracy with fascist governance would end.

Palestinian self-determination would be recognized. Support for Israel's war machine would end. Lawless sanctions wouldn't be imposed.

Iran would be free from US/Israeli threats. It would be fully accepted as a member of the world community with no strings.

America would be a model democracy - instead of a sham one threatening world peace.

Humanity would be able to exhale for the first time in the post-WW II era. Its survival chances would skyrocket like never before in modern times.

On February 23, Lavrov addressed a special open-debate Security Council session dedicated to "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Reflect on History, Reaffirm the Strong Commitment to the Purpose and Principles of the Charter of the United Nations."

With the UN approaching its 70th anniversary, he called for it to assert independence and effective leadership - despite attempts by some members to want their rights overriding all others.

Saying "(i)t's time to answer the question: do we really want the see the UN an effective and influential instrument of preserving peace and security or are we ready to allow it turn into the arena of propagandist struggle, with the UN being excluded from the process of finding key solutions to international problems."

It's time to respect UN Charter law as inviolable - bedrock rules of behavior all nations must respect.

Instead of endless wars, mass slaughter, destruction, and human misery without end.

"It’s enough to remember the bombings of Serbia, the occupation of Iraq under a false pretext…and the rude manipulation of the Security Council mandate leading to destruction and on-going chaos in Libya," said Lavrov.

He denounced the notion of one nation (the "leader," referring to America) using the SC as an instrument of its imperial policy.

It exerts "unsavory methods…such as massive pressure on sovereign states, attempts at imposing on them decisions and standards in politics, economics and ideology."

"For those unwilling to obey there are techniques of inspiring inner conflicts and carrying out regime change operations."

"One example is open encouragement (and manipulation) of the anti-constitutional coup in Ukraine," Lavrov explained.

Plus many others preceding it. More to come. Longstanding US policy is toppling all governments forgetting to remember who's boss.

"We believe it is necessary to immediately take decisive measures to reject double standards in world politics, to return the Security Council the role of a leading body on coordination of collective approaches relying upon respect for the cultural and civilizational diversity of the modern world, democratization of international relations," said Labrov.

In early February, Putin justifiably blamed Ukrainian crisis conditions on Washington.

It wants its will imposed everywhere, he said. It considers itself above the law. Earlier "promises of non-expansion of NATO to the East turned out to be hollow statements," said Putin.

"We have seen how NATO's infrastructure (moved increasingly) closer towards Russian borders and how Russian interests were being ignored" and threatened.

"(T)here have been attempts to tear states which were parts of the former USSR off Russia and to prompt them to make an artificial choice "between Russia and Europe."

"The Ukrainian crisis has become a high point of these negative trends."

"We repeatedly warned the USA and its Western allies about harmful consequences of their interference in Ukrainian domestic affairs, but they did not listen to our opinion."

"Last February, the USA and a number of EU member states supported the coup d’etat in Kiev."

"The ultranationalists who seized the power using military force put the country on the edge of disruption and started the fratricidal war."

"Unfortunately, today we can see how the 'war party' in Kiev actively supported from the outside continues its attempts to push the Ukrainian people over the edge of a catastrophe."

"Russia strongly calls for a comprehensive and exclusively peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis based on the Minsk agreements which were largely achieved owing to the initiative and efforts of the Russian side."

America's war on the world rages. Humanity's greatest challenge is stopping this monster before it destroys everyone.
