The Chile 1973 pattern

http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/ops/chile.htm

...In the spring of 1970, the Nixon administration, concerned that Salvador Allende, an avowed Marxist and founder of the Chilean Socialist Party, could well be elected president in the country's upcoming elections, directed the Agency to undertake a covert propaganda campaign against Allende, principally to convey the message that a vote for Allende would be bad for Chilean democracy...

The money was used to support various groups within Chile who were opposed to Allende. CIA agents infiltrated the Socialist Party in Chile, and organized street demonstrations against the regime. Ultimately a coup was produced in September 1973. Allende died within hours after its start...
