We urge passage of H.R. 1091, the Student Privacy Protection Act of 2009, a bill to ensure that our schools provide military recruiters with personal information about a student only if the parent of the student has given prior written permission to have that information released to the recruiters.
Currently schools must provide personal student information to military recruiters unless the parent of the student requests that this information be withheld. This option, often referred to the Opt-Out option, requires the action of the parent of the student to prevent personal information from being released to recruiters. This petition is asking that this Opt-Out policy be replaced with an Opt-In policy, where personal information will not be released to military recruiters unless the parent of the student explicitly consents to the release of such information.
