Census is late but trying to recruit everyone especially people who can speak other languages too...here are the how-to-apply details I encountered doing it today
There are many many locations in city where one shows up, w/o appointment to take a "test"...yes a written test that covers many things that a census worker might have to tackle, arithmatic, map reading, adding, numbers recognizing one name different than another similar one. finding patterns following written directions
not that easy but not too hard, timed for 1/2 hr everyone in one room together silently doing it and the results ?
they may give you a temporary part time job and call you no matter how you do on test if they dont have enough applicants....
and you have to show proof of citizenship or actual residency, like have a DMV license, passport, birth certificate or some other forms that you bring in that they can confirm you too are LEGIT and legally here.
It is worth the try to take the test and take the time to apply because the hourly pay is good...about $13? check out the Census WEBPAGE for details that I dont happen to have right now.
10 years ago, some people were hired way late into the workings when employees left for other work or trips or reasons and they had to replenish the staff...
most work 'out in the field' but the office one is assigned to is local to your residence. Others work in an office.
It is only a few intense months, never over 40 hrs, and it is 'follow by the book ' work - tho the workers are also as often confused and learning along the way. It is a mishmash of people, all kinds, and an experience of a lifetime, or at least a bit of pay when work is hard to find.
so check it out for yourself or tell a friend ...tho they may not notify you immediately so find another way and place to eat meanwhile... but you can now call and get answer to questions or see the FAQ on their website.
[here is the link I found just now: for contacting your Local Census Office by calling 1-866-861-2010 ." and "Census takers start at: $17.00/hour" how about that one !!!
NO ! I am not promoting this business or the govt but letting you know how it goes in case you want to RISK earning some money for a brief few months because you too need to get employed...anyhow...it comes !
some people are too fancy, or think they are so entitled, or act snobbish or are too selfish.
Me ? I want to share what I know with everybody, including those who like to complain, rebel and revolt and those are the ones who seem to read this indy site or write on it from what I see.
either way, you will probably be COUNTED by someone else who got your job at the Census if you dont ...a job that you didnt need or take, so it dont matter none either way.
just doing my -Expose the Info to All - thing.
see ya there...or not....
oh yeah, I just googled for the website for ya too.. whataniceguyIam...right ?

OPEN LETTER sent to KPFK too re: census has jobs ! see below
Census jobs for all who need to get paid work, even KPFKers...wanna share info ?
this article gives some info and it seems like a responsible and community-sharing idea that some programmer at KPFK take a 15" slot to do 5" of an interview about the getting of work at Census and how to do it...and 10" of phone in's for all who object to working for pay, even if they complain of no money to send to station.. the article that appeared on Indymedia - for the purpose of SHARING INFO and encourage people who want to earn money because they need it now - to try this PT and temporary work source. Might even learn something in the doing.
"CENSUS needs part time workers...wanna take the test ? just did it anyhow 2010-01-08 5:47 PM Census is late but trying to recruit everyone especially people who can speak other languages too...here are the how-to-apply details I encountered doing it today " It is in the station's interest to have people earn/ work for more money so they can also pledge or tithe some back to KPFK during fund drives or any other time. we have never heard any helpful information on KPFK about where or how to survive on bare subsistence levels or other things than a very few occasional times on the Pantry show or something of that nature...doesn't mean it has never ever been on, but hardly and not enough anyhow.
Do we not care about assisting our community when they're unemployed, not like staff, who are paid, however much or unionized they already are ?
How about those who are afraid, hesitate, doubt, rebel against doing establishment ordinary work all the while complaining and whining about 'never having enough' etc etc.... This would be giving stakeholders a bit of info, a hand up and NOT endorsing the USA govt, but providing a service to all who need to work. Please let me know if this is of interest to anyone who has a program, or why not.... we would love to know how the business-plan of this non-profit corporate includes helping OTHERS with actual contacts to earn a bit of money when the economy has corroded and been dumped on the 'rest of us'... "giving our money and power to big government or even non-profit corporations isoften is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys and tellingthem to 'go kiddo have some fun' ."
But getting some pay from either one is not quite as bad.
