political ties with Israel in protest against the war in Gaza, Al

al-Assad, the Syrian president, and Khaled Meshaal, the exiled leader of

the Arab initiative for peace with Israel was now "dead". He said

The Israeli military punched deeper into Gaza City on Thursday with a series

F16 warplanes struck on Thursday evening a 3-story building in northern Gaza
city killing five, including three senior leaders of Islamic Resistance

apparatus, Salah Abu Shreh, and the head of its military wing, Mahmoud
Watfah, were killed in the airstrike.

IDF has no mercy for the children in Gaza nursery schools By
Gideon Levy 16 Jan 2009 The fighting in Gaza is "war deluxe."
Compared with previous wars, it is child's play - pilots bombing unimpeded
as if on practice runs, tank and artillery soldiers shelling houses and
civilians from their armored vehicles, combat engineering troops destroying
entire streets in their ominous protected vehicles without facing serious
opposition. A large, broad army is fighting against a helpless population
and a weak, ragged organization that has fled the conflict zones and is
barely putting up a fight. All this must be said openly, before we begin
exulting in our heroism and victory. This war is also child's play because
of its victims. About a third of those killed in Gaza have been children -
311, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 270 according to the
B'Tselem human rights group - out of the 1,000 total killed as of Wednesday.
controls access, message in Gaza assault 15 Jan 2009 The Israeli
military took about a dozen foreign reporters on a rare foray into the Gaza
Strip Thursday, a day when a bombardment killed the Hamas security chief and
an Israel shell landed on the United Nations headquarters there. But the
journalists saw none of the action. Their 30-minute drive from an army base
near the border took them to an unpopulated area where a commander arrived
in a tank, gave a statement and answered a few questions. They saw no
troops, no combat.

Someone Must Stop Israel's Rampant Madness in Gaza
By Gideon Levy
The streets of Gaza Thursday looked like killing fields in the midst of the
"third stage" and worse. Israel is arrogantly ignoring the
Security Council's resolution calling for a cease-fire and is shelling the
UN compound in Gaza, as if to show its real feeling toward that institution.

Israeli ground troops have been forced to retreat to the outskirts of Gaza

Hamas chief: We will not surrender to Israeli conditions:
The Hamas political chief rejected Israel's conditions for a Gaza cease-fire
and demanded an immediate opening of the besieged territory's borders,
taking a tough line Friday as he asked a summit of Arab countries to back
him by cutting off any ties with Israel.
Israel may halt attack on Gaza:
Israel's security cabinet is expected to decide to halt the war on Gaza at a
meeting on Saturday, Israeli sources have said. The move would be seen as
being preferable to entering an Egyptian-brokered formal ceasefire with
Hamas, unnamed sources told the AFP and Reuters news agencies.

In a Friday address to an emergency Arab summit on the Gaza war, President
Ahmadinejad said Israeli leaders are responsible for the death and injury of
thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

Israeli peace activists face crackdown
200 still behind bars after taking part in protests against their
country's military offensive in Gaza
Oakland Ross Toronto Star
January 10, 2009
JERUSALEM–Israeli dissidents, opposed to their country's military
offensive in Gaza, have run into a police crackdown on a scale not seen in
nearly a decade, say human rights campaigners here.
Since the launch of the Gaza offensive two weeks ago, at least 500
Israeli peace activists have been arrested and jailed, all but a few of them
Arab Israelis. At least 200 are still behind bars.
"We're talking about mass arrests," said Abeer Baker, a member
of Adalah, a group that lobbies on behalf of Israel's Arab minority of 1.5
Not only are protesters being arrested on a scale not seen since the
beginning of the second intifada – a Palestinian uprising against Israeli
occupation that began in September 2000 – but they are being held in
prison for longer periods than in the past, say rights advocates.
"What we are seeing is an attempt to intimidate the people,"
said Adar Grayevsky, a Jewish law student and peace activist who spent three
days in jail after being arrested during what she said was a peaceful
anti-war protest in Tel Aviv Jan. 2. "There was a time when we would be
released in a few hours."
Some of the activists arrested during recent protests have already been
in prison for two weeks.
Prosecutors have 30 days from the time a suspect is arrested until they
must issue an indictment. During this period, they are not required to show
their evidence to defence lawyers, and the court may order that the suspect
remain in detention.
"The defence is in a situation where they don't have access to the
evidence," said Orna Kohn, staff attorney at Adalah. "It's very
easy for police to keep the person and hard for the defence to show why they
She said the length of such detentions has increased significantly
during the current Gaza offensive.
"It seems like a deliberate policy."
The system routinely treats Arabs more severely than Jews, said
Grayevsky, but Jewish activists have also been encountering harsher
treatment of late.
"This is the first time I can recall in my five years of
demonstrating that a Jewish Israeli (peace activist) was detained for more
than one night," she said. Her arrest followed her participation in a
brief demonstration outside a Tel Aviv air base.
"It was a `die-in,'" she said, explaining she and 18 other
demonstrators lay down by the side of the road, to show solidarity with
people in Gaza, whose death toll in the current conflict is approaching 800.
"It lasted for a minute. The people did not even block the

"The majority of demonstrations are carried out in full
co-ordination with the police," he said. "But people have taken

Rosenfeld put the number of activists arrested in the past fortnight at
more than 600, a figure even higher than the 500 or so claimed by peace
Regarding Grayevsky's die-in protest, he said demonstrators were
blocking the road and later attacked police officers. "In cases like
that," he said, "it's perfectly legitimate to make arrests."
