A 300+ strong march, built independently by the Frente Contra las Redadas and allied Barrio/Workers' defense organizations, marched under the red banners of Workers' Power, resistance to the Migra/I.C.E. raids, and zero compromise with the forces of imperialism and police terror (Democrats, Republicans, and their non-profit proxies)!
MARCH FOR DIGNITY! 300 March in Oxnard on International Workers’ Day: Obreros y Campesinos, Unidos Venceremos!
May 2, 2008 (Oxnard, CA)
The Frente Contra las Redadas del Condado de Ventura FCR-VC (United Front Against the Raids) organized and independent march to protest the increasing repression on the part of the U.S. Government against undocumented workers. Led by a county-wide contingent of Aztec Danzantes, the march began at Camino del Sol Park in La Colonia, and proceeded through the neighborhood and out two main streets, Oxnard Boulevard and Rose Avenue. Participating in the demonstration were local service and port labor organizers, as well as a county anti-war contingent, and local Oxnard campesinos, youth, and families. Along with several individuals, the organizers of the March for Dignity were Oxnard and Ventura College M.E.Ch.A., Arts 4 Action, Somos Raza, Luisa Moreno Human Rights Committee, and Union del Barrio.
A local resident that stood at his door and watched the march pass by stated, “Today, I am proud to be a worker.
I am proud to see that we are uniting to fight against the racist, Migra/ICE deportations!” Another community member was brought to tears, of joy, as she watched the militant, organized, and independent march that clamored “Fuera Con La Migra! (Out with Migra/ICE), and Alto a las Redadas! (Stop the Raids!)”
The FCR-VC, for the past four months had been working to organize the March for Dignity, whick took place on Thursday May 1, 2008 on International Workers’ Day. From the onset, the FCR-VC made its demands clear, Stop the Migra/ICE raids, Down with the Wall of Death (U.S./Mexico Border), Union Jobs with Dignified Wages, and a call to the End the War, here and abroad.
FCR-VC organizers, also made it clear that as a totally independent, grassroots movement, that neither Republicans nor the Democrats have any intention of ending the terror being unleashed by the Migra/ICE, rounding up workers, separating families, and extending and militarizing the border. The task at hand is to organize and prepare the community at the street-level, with workers, men, women, and children.
