United Farm Workers Co-founder, Cesar Estrada Chavez, was dishonored by Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) on Friday when he objected to a resolution that would’ve honored the Mexican – American civil rights leader on what would have been his 80th birthday.

Senator McConnell, claiming that modifications to the resolution had not yet been agreed upon, used his right to object to the resolution and essentially blocked it. "Cesar Chavez helped permanently improve conditions for American workers and farm laborers - his memory should be honored, not used for political tricks. He was a hero to millions upon millions of Americans, Hispanic or not, and he should be honored with dignity. I call on our Republican colleagues to cease their political play and immediately allow us to honor this great Mexican American" said Sen. Menendez (D-NJ), co-chair of the Senate Hispanic Task Force. A resolution is similar to a bill and can be joint, concurrent or simple. A Senate resolution, however, usually deals with the internal operations of the Senate.
